Re: Shew woman married to Ver Planck

I saw your 2000 post about a Shew woman who married a Ver Planck being the parents of Anna Ver Planck (b1764). I don't think this could have been correct. Please check out my Shew family website www.GodfreyShew.com You'll see that the only possible parents for that birth date in the Saratoga County Shew family would have been Godfrey & Katherine Shew. Their children are well documented with no mention of an Anna. They quite probably, but not possitively, immigrated from Germany down the Rhine River to the Dutch port of Rotterdam (now the Netherlands) where they boarded a Ship for Philadelphia. I would be VERY interested in your original source for your 2000 information. Thanks, Pete

I'm searching for family/descendants of Jacob Lemuel Shew and Nora Clark. They had two children: Flossie who married Richard Ray Nov. 4, 1850, (son Richard), and Jim Shew, wife's name unknown, who had a daughter Beatrice who married Jack Lloyd. They had two children, Jack and Alice. I am descended from Jacob's 2nd marriage to Adelia Woodsen Gilbert.

I have a scanned version of a picture of Mary Shew with several children that I can share. "Samuel and Mary C McKern Shew Family, about 1897" is written across the top and the children are identified. I believe I got this from Leona, who used to monitor a McKern board. Unfortunately, the resolution is less than ideal. The picture is not yet on my website. Leave a message and I'll email a copy.
(www.genealogy.bridgetmckern.com)

Flora's oldest daughter told us the smallest child in the picture was a grandchild. Cheri may have all the info. or I may have in a box, we'll see what we can find. Kate, Sade, Flora, Ed, Bert and others are in the photo, not dad though. Love to hear from you and share info.

Samuel Shew and Mary McKern

Samuel Shew m. Mary McKern before 1872 when their first known child was born in Mercer County, Missouri. Mary (McKern) Shew had been born in Mercer County, the daughter of Henry McKern (b. ca 1818 NC) and Lydia [Pierce?] (b. ca 1835 MO).

The children of Samuel & Mary (as found in various census records) were:
(1) Sarah (aka Sadie) Shew b. ca 1872 m. Nowlin
(2) Lydia C. (aka Katie) Shew b. ca 1875 m. Pounds
(3) John Edward (aka Ed) Shew b. 4 Apr 1878 m. Daisy Frances [unknown surname]
(4) Florinda (aka Flora) Shew b. May 1880 m. Sult
(5) Willie Shew b. ca 1883
(6) Bert Shew b. ca 1891

Based on census records, Samuel Shew/Shoe was born:
* 1880 Mercer County, Missouri / 36 yo / b. ca 1844 OH / parents b. PA
* 1895 Appanoose County, Iowa State census / 54 yo / b. ca 1841 OH / parents b. PA
* 1910 Wapello County, Iowa / 69 yo / b. ca 1841 OH / parents b. PA

Samuel would have been between 6 - 9 yo in 1850. He consistently reported that both parents were born in Pennsylvania. The only record that I have found (so far) is that he could have been the son of Samuel Shoe b. 1801 PA and his wife, Catharine, b. 1806 PA who were enumerated in 1850 Logan County, Ohio. The birth year is not quite right for Samuel but that is not unusual.

Is there anyone else researching this family who can tell me if I am on the right path or not?

Thank you.
My grandmother was Sarah Frances Shew (her obit said Calvert). She married Frank Nowlin and they lived their lives in Newtown, MO, where I was born. I remember seeing Kate, Flora, Bert and Cecil when they came to visit Sarah in 1937 (I'm guessing the exact year). I have been in touch with Cheryl, but my mother, Vada Nowlin, passed on 13 June 2002. She was the last of that generation on that side of the family. I would be happy to share information with any or all of you. My youngest sister, Fay Altiser, still lives in Newtown, MO. My other sister in Holyrood, Ks, and my brother in Columbia, MO.
Linda, I am your cousin from Texas, Pauline's daughter. She is the only surviving Shew/Sult child. She would love to hear from you, she keeps in contact with most of the cousins. Juanita in Washington, Dorothy's, Essie's, Cliff's daughter is deceased, Claude had "no" offspring, Lucille's two remaining. Love to hear from you, we've just done the cemetery visit in Guthrie at the end of the year after attending my last aunt's funeral. Cheri Taylor is another researcher, like myself, on a sometimes basis, she has Essie recorded on tape when we traveled to Iowa. Unfortunately we far apart, not able to get together as often as we all would like. Maybe you can come to our next family reunion, we've had two in 4 years, next is 2007 if mom (Pauline) is of a mind to have it. She's doing well for 91, still driving, dancing, going, she has slowed but 'still going'. Hope to hear from you and any others who have info to piece this Shew-Sult puzzle together.
Alonzo Shew / Charles A. Shew - Iowa

I have been trying to discover the connection between Alonzo Shew b. abt 1807 and Charles A. Shew b. 1831, both born in New York. At first I thought they were father/son, but now believe there was a different relationship between them - perhaps uncle/nephew? (Alonzo Shew was a son of Godfrey Shew Jr., and grandson of Godfrey Shew Sr. the immigrant.) Alonzo and Charles Shew migrated west together, both eventually settling in Delaware County, Iowa. I can trace my ancestry back to Charles (gg grandfather) but have been unable to determine who his parents were. Charles married Martha Daniels 1855 in Whiteside County, Illinois, and had the following children: Willis, Alonzo, Phoebe Almira, Fred, and Martha or "Mattie". If anyone can make a connection to either Charles A. Shew or the elder Alonzo Shew, or any of Charles's children, I would be happy to share information.

Re: Shew:Alabama to Texas

Hi Pam,
Funny I should get this e-mail from you today. Yesterday, I did research for just a few minutes and came across a Grogan G. Shew in the 1910 Census for St.Clair County, AL. (E.D. 115- Prct. 18- Caldwell) (Sheet 3b- dwelling #55- Settlement Road). I was under the understanding that Simon's Grogans' first name was Elias, but then the handwriting back then is sometimes hard to decifer. It could be Grogan E. Grogan G. Shew (58-AL) was married to a Mary E. (SC)- age 52.Grogans father was born in NC, mother in AL.
Their children: Annie (20-AL), a daughter whose name I couldn't make out (20-AL) possibly a twin or an error, Leonard (18-AL), Eula (15-AL) and Thelma (10-AL). Grtogan and Mary were married 36 years and are shown having 11 children- all living in 1910.

I also found a Robert J. Shew (1910 Etowah Co.,AL Cenus- E.D. 62- Sheet 1a; Prct. 5- Ballplay- dwelling #7- Beginning of Crofts Ferry Rd.) Robert (32-AL), both parents from AL.
Married 12 years to Augusta (32-GA), both parents from GA.
Shown as having 6 children and all living.
Their Children: Vonie (daughter- 11-AL), Fred (9-AL), Eva Brele (7-AL), John M. (5-AL), Jessie L. (daughter-2-AL), and Charley (7/12-AL).
I hope this information is of some help to you. By the way, how are you related to Simon? I have some other information in my files somewhere reguarding Robert and Augusta, but I'll have to look for it. Give me a couple of days and I'll send it to you. Take Care. Esther

I have a picture of Alva Shew at a very early age. He or she is wearing a dress, looks like a short blond hair cut, and black patent leather shoes with black tights. Maybe 5to 7 years old? Will send a copy to anyone wanting to check it out. Would love to see them find their family. If it is your relative I would be glad to send the orginal. To email me please put old pictures in the subject line as I don't open mail from people I don't know. Thanks Sue

He married a Margaret Battle who was also from Alabama.
I'm not quite sure but in 1850 Cherokee Co.,AL there was my Daniel and Margaret with the 1st born son William (1 year old).
In the same county there was a Simon Shew married to a Sarah ??. Which would make him old enough to be Daniel's brother and
then there is a Boston Shew, again in the same county. His wife's name is Elizabeth and they have a 20 year old daughter who name looks like Elivra or Elmira and a son named John. If any of this sounds familiar, please let me know. It has been so hard finding anything on these people.
I found a Boston and Simon and Daniel from Wilkes Co.,NC, but they are not the same people that I am looking for although they might be related somehow. Thanks.
