Hello Mecklenlenburg. I'm not sure I understand your last post. Did you make the connection with Daniel Shipman and Elizabeth Burleson in your tree? If so, this would be great news. I've been trying to locate passenger lists with Daniel's name or even try to locate the possible place of birth to obtain an Ortsippen book. From some information I had gathered, I thought the town may have been Moorfleet, but I have no proof that is true. Could you possibly shine some light on this dilemma?

The Daniel Shipman that settled in North Carolina in the early 1700's was my 6th great grandfather. Only information I have found has him coming from Wales or England. Don't know exact area. He married Elenore (last name unknown). They had 5 children. One of their sons, James L. Shipman was a Captain of the Bladen County Militia during the Revolutionary War. James L.Shipman married Lucy Lewis, daughter of Josiah Lewis and Ann Mullington. James and Lucy's son James L. Shipman, Jr. moved to Alabama after 1825. Think all other children of Lucy and James remained in North Carolina. Nadine Sinkwitz nee Shipman was lots of information on the Barbour County, Ala Shipmans. All my relatives stayed in Bladen/Columbus County, NC.

Hi Mary. I am a descendant of William. We still live on the property that George selected here in Glenreagh, and my great uncle Frederick Shipman still lives on James' original property. I will ask him about David Pont, as he knows a lot more about our family tree than I do. There were an elderly couple in Glenreagh with the last name Pont. Margaret died not that long ago. Do you think her husband is of the same family? (I wish I could remember his name!)

Feel free to email me though at musicmaker1982@hotmail.com

And the property at Robinson is still in the Shipman family, but I'm not sure which branch. I'm only new at this genealogy stuff...

~Krystel.

I am interested in any pictures of William Mascenia Aiken (1857-1931) and Mary Jane Shipman Aiken (1858-1915) and /or their family. They lived in Brevard, North Carolina, and they are my great-great-grandparents. I have pictures of their eldest son and his family (Charles Frazier Aiken), as he is my great-grandfather, but none of them. I knew two of their daughters, but none of the others. Their children were:

Charles Frazier Aiken
Hugh Canaroah "Caney" Aiken
Nellie "Nell" Evalena Aiken Newland
Willie Viola Aiken
Jennie Dare Aiken Laurens
Looney Mascena "Jack" Aiken
Bonnie Mae Aiken Talley
Eardley Little Aiken

I am very interested in communicating with any descendants of this Aiken family line, and sharing what I have!

Thanks!
Jennie Aiken Dickson

I have a Stephen Shipman son of Benjamin Shipman and Mary Osborne.

My Stephen was born in Lounden, VA in 1779 and Married Nancy Gassoway. The only child I have listed for them is Walter but that could be because I just haven't found any documentation of siblings.

My interest is in Walter's m. to Ann Eliza Wilson. They had 8 children. Of interest to me was their son, Stephen Shipman II who married Mary Catherine Londrie. They had 10 children and their daughter, Ann, was my great great grandmother.

Is this related?

Jacob Shipman was reported to have married Sarah Gage who died within the first month of the marriage and he promptly married Sarah McMinn. This is just family tradition no record has ever been found of either marriage. It is beieived that the children all belonged to the Sarah McMinn but again no proof of her name has been found. Yes they did have a daughter Elizabeth who married a Burleson and ended up in Texas. Their son was the famous General Edward Burleson who I think was the Vice president of Texas at one time. There is quite a bit of info on the Burleson family
at this site:
http://www.alltel.net/~bajulus/aaron.html
Let me know if I can help you more.
Shirley

I believe i have a direct line to this couple, but i find conflicting information and i hope you can help, it appears there are several wives to several of the shipmans in the generations i've tried to trace and often it isn't clear which children belong to which mother. my connection begins with Martha Jane Shipman b sep23 1863 TN d nov5 1943 m Rev George Grant Davis (no information abt parents or dates on him . . . great if you can help with that) I have their marriage as sep 23 1883 in Searcy Co, AR. and much information on their children esp Ida Bridgett Davis-Moore (my gg grandmother)

.. . back to the Shipmans . . . I have Martha Jane's Parents as John Shipman b nov8 1835 TN d apr12 1903 AR m Margret A. Green b dec25 1842 TN d may2 1887 AR (no info on parents, no marriage date/loc)

. . . I have John Shipman's Parents as William Shipman b 1795-7 NC d TN m Amia Unknown b 1805 NC children John, Mary, Alexander, George Morgan, Thomas & Nancy.

. . . I have William's Parents as Edward Shipman Sr. b 1743 NC d 1814 NC m 1774-5 NC to Sara Jane Williams b 1747 NC d 1843 NC ( no info on parents)

. . . . I have Daniel's Parents as Unknown Schipman and Esther Unknown w Daniel b 1715 in Hamburg Germany d aug 11 1798 in Warren Co, KY m Elizabeth Burleson 1718 NC d 1783 NC married in 1740 in VA. children Edward Jacob, Christian, Phoebe, Sarah, Anna, Lucretia, Daniel, Rebecca& Mary Jane.

The greatest confusion seems to be the Burleson Line beginning with the parents of Elizabeth Burleson, i would greatly appreciate it if you could match my information with whatever youhave and clarify anything if possible.

My best guess is father Aaron Burleson b 1691-1695 in Caerleon, Monmouth, Wales UK d 1763 or 1782 in NC or TN

it appears there are several Aarons in a couple of generations that are associated as her father in diff trees . . . the mother is scetchy too listed as Mary Ann Camp in some trees and Sarah Camp in others . . . possible two marriages or different Aarons. Really hope you have something here as my tree is getting cloudy . .. sorry for the long message hope i hear from you thanks Joel

Abraham Shipman in Indiana

I have reached a dead-end on Shipman family research and am requiring assistance. The last relative I'm certain of is Abraham Shipman, born in 1815 and dying in 1892 in Dearborn Indiana. I have him listed as being born in Indiana, but am uncertain of where or if this is accurate. He is the father of James Oscar Shipman (1840-1899). He supposedly married Harklaney Russell (1810-1847) in 1838 in Dearborn Indiana.

The information I have has him listed as the son of Jacob Shipman (1790-1833) and Susannah Meddock (unknown birthdates, but the daughter of a Moses Meddock). With a multitude of Abraham's and Jacob's floating around the Shipman line around this time, it's making it difficult to find any further information and/or clarification to these points. Any help to this effect would be greatly appreciated.

Charles Oscar Shipman was born to James Oscar Shipman (son of Abraham Shipman & Harklaney Russell; born in Switzerland, Ohio County, Indiana; 1840-1899 and buried in Hamilton, Missouri) and Ida Mitchell (daughter of John Mitchell; born in Carroll Indiana; 1853-1924 and buried with James Logan Shipman (one of Charles' brothers) in Olathe Kansas) in Bloomfield Nebraska in 1891.

My relation is through Harry Lee Shipman, the eldest son of James Oscar and Ida Shipman. Harry Lee (1881-1959) married Lida Belle Blacksten (1885-1955), and their youngest son, Donal, was my grandfather on my mother's side.

If you have any questions concerning this line of the Shipman family up to Abraham (1815-1892, son of Jacob Shipman [I think])...e-mail me.

I'm a Daniel Shipman/Elizabeth Burleson descendant through Jacob Shipman/Esther Byers. Can you tell me if this Daniel Shipman was indeed in Bladen County, NC before he went to Mecklenburg, Tryon, & Rutherford Counties (then to Kentucky)? I saw a message that was trying to get DNA participants and it listed "Daniel Shipman in Bladen, Daniel Shipman in Rutherford, and..." as markers. I also have seen wills and pension applications of Shipmans in Bladen County who don't match up with the Daniel who married Elizabeth Burleson and Phoebe Staton. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Amber, I have some info on the Shipman family that settled in the Glenreagh district in New South Wales. Willian Shipman moved to this district in about 1887 where he had 275 acres and during the Dorrigo rail line construction his wife (Theresa) ran a boarding house which was spoken very highly of. I don't know anything about Williams parents accept that his father had a property at Robertson on the south coast. His brothers and sisters were - John b. 1849, James b. 1851, Harry b. 1855, George b. 1858, Suzan b. 1860, Charlotte (Mrs David Pont) b. 1862, Mary (Mrs Garrett) b. 1864 Samuel b. 1867, Ellen (Mrs Quinn) b. 1869, Harriet (Mrs Nicholson)b. 1872. I am looking for info on David Pont, who was Charlotte's husband.

Regards
Mary

Shipman, Joseph (1807-1864) Athens Co., Ohio

Joseph Shipman was born in Athens Co., Oh about 1807. The only two Shipmans in Athens County around that time frame was Charles Shipman and Daniel Shipman. The family of Charles Shipman is fairly well documented being a son of Joshua & Sybil Chapman Shipman of Saybrook CT & Marietta OH, near Athens Co., OH. Charles had one son, William G. Shipman. Very little is known of Daniel Shipman other than data from the 1810, 1830 & 1840 census. Some Shipman researchers believe that the above Joseph is Joseph Chapman Shipman (1810-1829), youngest son of Joshua & Sybil Chapman Shipman. That seems unlikely based on their bible records.
Joseph lived in Montgomery Co., IN in 1840, in Cass Co., IN in 1850 and in Davis Co., Iowa in 1860. He joined the Union Army in 1862 at age of 55 and died in Memphis, TN in 1864. Joseph married Mary Ann “Polly” Wine (1810 VA- 1853 IN) in 1835. They had nine children including James Scott (1836-1926), Daniel (1838), Abigail Emily (1840-1926), George C. (1842), Henry Milton (1844-1933), Marshall (1846), Nancy Ann (1849-1935), Elias Francis (1852-1884), and John Andrews (1853-1853). Mary Ann Wine was previously married to Benjamin Johnson and they had three children. After the death of Mary Ann, Joseph married Elizabeth Wells in 1858 in Davis Co., Iowa.
I have worked on this family a long time without much progress. Any help is greatly appreciated! You can email me at hijlo@aol.com, telephone 540-433-0908, or mail at 2525 Fridleys Gap Road, Harrisonburg, VA 22802.
Thank you,
Marvin Ogburn
Thank you for your help!
I was also wondering if anyone knows of any ancestors before Daniel Shipman (husband to Elizabeth Burleson), other than the little we know of his parents? His grandparents? Where to look? Thanks! Annette
