Patrick Orson Shire

I just received word that Patrick Orson Shire, son of John Calvin Shire and Brenda Elizabeth Roscoe, died on January 3, 2009 at the age of 13. Patrick died in a skiing accident in Pennsylvania.

It's very sad to see a life end at such a young age.

Wesley Aldrich Shire

I am seeking information on Wesley Aldrich Shire (son of Eli Albert Shire) and his family line.

I have lost track of Wesley after 1910. I have notes that say he had a son Norman Oliver Shire and I did find an obituary for him. According to the obituary, Norman was born in Alberta Canada in 1920. That might explain why I lost track of Wesley. However I can't find any record that shows him crossing the boarder.

Wesley's wife was Frances R Park according to Norman's obituary.

If anyone has any information on this family I would greatly appreciate the help!

Sarah Catherine Shire

I need some help tracing one of the children of Christopher (Christian) Shire.

The 1870 census in Ohio shows Christian and his wife Martha having a daughter, Sarah E. Shire born abt. 1858. However, she is not listed on the 1860 census with the family.

I believe I found her on the 1910 Indiana census married to a Lewis Copeland, who was born in 1836. She is listed as having 5 children with 5 living. The census also states that Lewis and Sarah were married for 4 years. Lewis Copeland died in 1914 in Indiana.

There is a marriage record for a Sarah C Copeland and William H Tice in Indiana on 19 Oct 1916. They are listed together on the 1920 Indiana census.

Christian's obituary in 1913 lists his surviving daughter, Sarah C. Copeland living in Indiana. A grave next to Christian in Illinois is for "Tice, Catherine Shire, Wife Wm. 1858-1924".

I'm wondering why she is not listed in the 1860 census with Christian and Martha. Could she have been adopted? And I cannot locate her after the 1870 census until the 1910 census mentioned above.

I'm showing a birthdate for her as 01 Feb 1858. I've scoured as many on-line records as my eyes can handle for marriage records in Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio. And I've searched through census data for a "Sarah C" in those three states as well.

Does anyone have any information on her? I've seen several postings on her father, Christian and her brother, John Wesley. Perhaps someone has come across family information for her?

Hmmm....you are right. I have Charles Shier (b.1737) married Ann Brinson around 1767. They had 7 children, Mary (b1767), Charles (b1770), John (b1786), Stephen (b.1787), Ann (b1787). William (b1787) and Elizabeth (b1789). Charles Shier II married Mary Rondal around 1792. William married Rebecca Fish around 1803 and Charles II married Mary Rondal around 1792. Charles and Mary had 5 children, Elizabeth (b 1792), John (b1793), William (b 1797), Charles (b1797) and Mary (b1802). It was Charles III who married Sara Trask in 1811....I have some limited information on Mary Mitchell as well. Does this match anything you have?

Anybody know anything about the parents of John Shire who died in 1893 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY? He was married to Mary Rautenbusch and left one child under the age of 5. He was a bill poster for (put up theatrical posters) for E. T. Heverin.

I am a little confused! I have Charles Shire (bpt 1787) m to Sarah Trask as brother to William who m Rebecca Fish both as SONS of Charles (dob unknown) who was m to Ann Brinson. You seem to have another generation between them. Sorry, have I mis -understood you?
Co incidentally my mother married a Mitchell so that was my maiden name!! They came from Frome and before that Warminster. I wonder if there is a conaction there!!!?? Look forward to hearing back from you.

I have also traced my family back to Charles Shire and Ann Brinson and would be interested in any information you might have. Charles and Ann also had a son named Charles who married Mary Rondal, their son, Charles married Sarah Trask, and their son James married Mary Mitchell and had a daughter Caroline...my great-great-great grandmother.

There is only 1 Robert Shire in all Ireland listed on the Griffiths valuation dated 1852. He is in Ballingarane, Limerick and has 3 listings (2 just being gardens). Sounds like you are on the right track.

Thank you for your message. I have in fact got a little further than when I last posted here. Someone on another list (Irish Paletine I think) sent me the following information:

"Arabella Switzer, daughter of Amos Switzer of North Strand, Limerick
City, married 7 Jul 1847 in St. Mary's Church of Ireland Cathedral, Limerick
City, Limerick City, Robert Shier, farmer of Court Matrix, son of Nicholas
and of full age.

This is from the church register in Limerick."

However, I have not been able to find any evidence/documentation to prove the relationship of my Robert Nicholas to Robert Shire and Arabella Switzer even though these seem possible parents.

Do let me know if you find any other relevant information.

Arabella Switzer was married in 1847, Vol 6, Page 581, Limerick. You could easily get this birth cert from Ireland for a few Euro, if her husband was Robert Shire/Shier, you would also have a Switzer connection. I have both Switzer and Shire. There was an Arabella Bowen born 1823 in Limerick who had Shire ancestry, unusual name. If you get Arabella's fathers name you might connect to the Switzers line back to Germany.

Cora Secor Shire

Cora Secor married Frank A. Shire in 1903 (I believe in Illinois) Frank was born Oct. 18, 1887 in Illinois, son of Will Shire and Mary ___?.
Cora died in 1931 at about age 37. (I heard in Chicago) Frank and Cora had 6 children: 1) Chester Raymond Shire
2) Harry Edward Shire
3) Evelyn Shire (still alive)m. Fred Ashley
4) Dorothy Shire m. LeRoy Hutchins
5) Regina Shire m. Ernest Huffman
6) Dau. died in childhood

Frank Shire remarried after Cora's death, to Minnie Barnes. Moved to Durand, Byron and Owosso, MI. Buried in Owosso.

Need info. on Cora and her family, her burial place, parents names, obit or anything pertaining to mentioning of her. Her last name "Secor" may have been shortened from another name.

My mother was a Shire her father was Beckley Arthur Shire born 1893 died 1932, his father was Sidney Arthur Shire born 1870 died 1957. His father was John Shire born 1845 died 1913 his wife was Ann Garrett. Where does your John Shire fit into this.

Robert Shire

I am trying to trace my family tree but have got stuck with Robert Shire, my great grandfather. He was born about 1856, in Ireland according to the 1901 Census of England and Wales. I have his marriage certificate which states that his father was also called Robert Shire, a farmer. No location is given for his father. I have learned from another Shire relative that my great grandfather Robert had brothers and sisters who emmigrated to the US but I have no names for them nor any idea of when or where they emmigrated.

My great grandfather had very dark hair and a dark beard which, along with his black cape, earned him the nickname of "Black Bob" as a constable in the Cheshire Constabulary in which I believe he served until forced to retire from ill health.

So the family line is:
Robert Shire -- dates and location unknown but must have been in Ireland at some stage.
Children: various unknown emmigrated to US 1800s?
Robert Shire (son) b c 1856 Ireland.
married Lucy Harriet Thelwell Atcham, Shropshire, England 1886
Children: All born in Chester, England
George R b c 1886 Arabella b c 1887
Florence E b c 1889
Henry F b c 1890/91
John Arthur b c 1993 died 1916
Robert W b c 1995
Lucy May b 1899 (my grandmother)
Possible further children

I have some information on the Shire surname in Somerset.
John Shire b: 1828 East Chinnock, Somerset, d: 17/4/1878 E.Chinnock. He married Nancy Templeman (b:1828 E.Chinnock, d: 16/5/1907 E.Chinnock) and had a daughter Martha (b: 9/12/1859 E.Chinnock, d: 21/5/1935 Penge). She married Charles Bartlett on 4/1/1885. My wife is a descendant of this couple. I hope this helps and would be very interested in any information you might have

Frank Shire/Cora Mitchell

Frank Shire b. Oct. 18, 1887 in Illinois. Married Cora Mitchell in 1903 in Chicago, Illinois.
(There's some confusion on Cora's last name) They had 6 children: I believe all born in Chicago:
1) Chester (my father-in-law, deceased)
2) Harry (deceased)
3) Evelyn (still living in 1999)
4) Dorothy (deceased)
5) Regina (deceased)
6) girl died in childhood

Cora passed away abt. 1931 abt. age 37, we don't know where, but father thought it was in Chicago (he was young).
We are looking for anything on her. We have their wedding photo....we would very much like to know where she and her child are buried at.
Frank remarried in Owosso, MI and is buried up here with his 2nd wife...I would be very greatful for any help. As always, I share my info.

My grandmother's maiden name was Irene Shire.(1890-1963) She died in Bristol, but I don't know if she was born there or not. Her father was George Shire.

I believe your Daniel Shire's father was also Daniel Shire and Sarah. This is my line:
Daniel Shire b.1828 m. Sarah 1846
George Shire b. 1862
Daniel Shire b. 1868
John Shire b. 1870
Elmer Shire b. 1873
The children were all born in Tamaqua, but Daniel was born in Mt. Joy, Lancaster County Pa.
I think his father might be George Shire, but have no proof. Am still working on it.
Let me know if anyone knows anything about the Shire's of Lancaster County.

I am looking for information on Caroline Shire born in Westboker, Somerset around 1849. I believe her father was James Shire and her mother's name was Mary? She married James Burt in 1872 and lived in Lymington. She moved to Canada in 1905 with her 3 youngest children.

Shire in Holmes Co. Ohio

Found a Samuel and Rebecca Shire on the 1850 census in Holmes Co. OH with 4 children listed - (Mary J., George, Rebecca, and John.) Samuel was a tailor living in Berlin Twp. These parents were born in PA; children born in OH.

I am trying to prove this John Shire, age 6, to be (my Husband's line) ancestor.

But there are 3 "John Shire" families, I believe, in OH or age of a minor.
I have John Shire born about 1846. Married in 1871 and had a famiy of 6 children. Daughter, Ola was born in June 1884 and married Joseph M. Brown in 1902. These are my husband's gr-gr-grandparents. I have a page from a Wayne Co. OH History book (copyright 1987) with A. Franks and Daisy Shire, an older sister, born about 1878. Daisy Shire divorced and married Harvey Grow and lived in Arkansas from 1935-1950.

They had siblings named: Jesse Lee, David, Edward W. and Claudia. Their parents were: John and Martha J. (McClaren spelling?) Shire or Shires. John was born in April 1846 according to 1900 census.

I am researching Catherine(Ruffing) Shire, also known as Kate, married to Eugene Shire in Paterson, N.J. around 1868. They had at least 2 children, Joseph and Eugene. Eugene was born in Germany 1848, to Max and Jane Shire. Max died around 1902, he is buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery,Totowa, N.J. The Shire and Ruffing families were farmers in Little Falls Township, N.J. Kate was the daughter of Peter and Margaret Ruffing.
