Serena Baker and Silas Jefferson Shirey or Shirah - GA

I'd like to contact any of the descendants of Serena and Silas Jefferson Shirey. Their children were Andrew J., Charlie Burdette, Lena Jane, Ovie Virginia, Willis (Wilson?) J, and Minnie Lou. According to the notes I have, all the children were born between 1877 and 1891, probably in Heard Co GA or Carroll Co GA.

Some family members spell the surname Shirah.

I am especially interested in the military history of these families, including WW I and II, Vietnam, Korea, etc. but my interest is not limited to military.

Serena's sister was my great-grandmother.

Thanks,
Dorothy

I posted a question about Thomas and Isabella May 17 2009 and someone answered but I keep getting an error message when I try to open it. If you could please answer me again or send me an email at bellagirlc@yahoo.com I would be so happy. My question was that I am confused that these two were so far apart in age and they seem to fit into my tree but somehow it just seems odd. I cant even find my question on the board.

I was wondering if anyone ever figured out who John Shirey's 1st wife was. His 2nd wife, Anna Ruthrauff, is well documented in a 1925 book on the Ruthrauffs. I just discovered that my ancestor Samuel Shirey is clearly from John Shirey's 1st marriage. I also don't have any reliable information on John Shirey's parentage information other than his birth was Nov 24, 1773, Franklin Co., PA. I have a bunch of his children's info, but haven't gotten farther back than the 1830 census..

Thanks for checking. You seem quite adamant about your "No," yet your Rebecca would only have been 43 which is not too old to have a pregnancy...especially in those days. If you ever come across another Charles and Rebecca Shirey from roughly the same time period or shortly thereafter, please let me know. By the way...would you happen to know the maiden name of your Rebecca? I was unable to decipher my great aunt's hand writing on her mother's maiden name. I can only make out a few letters. I would appreciate that information, if you have it. Thanks for your reply.

Blessings,
Lee-Pierre Shirey

I am interested in what years you have for Charles and Rebecca Shirey and am wondering IF they may be my great-great grandparents. I am sure that my great grand father was Elmer C. Shirey, born 15 July 1862 in PA, died 17 Dec. 1944 in OH. Up until recently, I took other researchers data and listed his parents as Alexander & Elizabeth Shirey. Unfortunately, when I found a copy of Elmer's death certificate, his daughter, my Great Aunt Mabel Shirey Lewe, clearly wrote the names of his parents as Charles and Rebecca Shirey of Greencastle, PA!! I am searching every possible. I have found a Charles Shirey born in 1838 in Greencastle, Franklin Co., PA, the son of Augustus Shirey, born 1817 in Greencastle. But nothing yet to connect either of them to my family tree.

Therefore...are YOUR Charles and Rebecca Shirey a possibility for me?

I look forward to your reply.

Blessings,
Lee-Pierre Shirey
LPSHIREY@ROGERS.COM

I am researching the family of Enoch SHIREY and his wife Stella who lived in Indiana County. They appear in Young Twp. in the 1920 census and also lived in Center and White Twps. Two of their daughters were Mary and Rose. I believe they immigrated from Austria between 1909 and 1912. Enoch was a coal miner. I am searching for descendants who would like to share family history, photos and documents. Both Enoch and Stella are buried in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Indiana County, PA.
Susan Virgil ‘Susie’ WARREN b. 31 July 1890 Heard Co. GA d. 30 Apr 1976 Carroll Co GA m. 13 May 1911 Rufus Sidney SHIREY b. 30 Apr 1881 Heard Co. GA d. 30 Jan 1952 in Carroll Co. GA. at the age of 71.. Rufus Shirey was one of six children born to Newman Franklin ‘Frank’ Shirey b. 14 Mar 1849 who was living in Heard County GA with his first wife Mary Few. (Newman Franklin Shirey married 2nd on 15 Apr 1906 Doris Maxwell). Two of Newman Franklin Shirey’s children married into the Warren family. Rufus’s sister Ollie Shirey married John Henry Warren. The Shirey family is often misspelled Shirah, Shira, Shiry so census documents can be interesting to locate, and spelling on marriage records tends to vary. However their gravestones are spelled Shirey. Rufus Shirey had been married before. He had married 1st a Hattie SMITH on 30 Aug 1903 in Heard Co. GA. Rufus and Hattie divorced, and he is found living in 1910 as a divorced man in Cales Mill, Franklin Co. AL living as a hired hand on Wm H Bagwell farm and a few doors down from Nathaniel T. Nix (The Nix and Smith families were related.) Rufus remarried in 1911 to Susan Warren. Susan Warren was living with her father in 1900 in Roopville, Carroll Co. GA. In 1930 Rufus and Susan (Warren) Shirey are farming in Lowell, Carroll Co. GA. Susie (Warren) Shirey died of a stroke at age 85 in the Dix Nursing Home in Carroll Co. GA. Her husband Rufus Sidney Shirey had died at age 70 of a cerebral hemorrhage and arterosclorosis. The informant for both deaths was their son Roy Shirey. They are both buried in the Lowell Methodist Church Cemetery, Carroll Co. GA. Their children:
Woodrow W. SHIREY b.15 May 1915 GA d. 31 July 1975 Carroll Co.

There is no Newman Shirey in the bible record. Also, the earliest record in the bible is 1834. My ancestors are from PA (Joseph 1811, Daniel Shirey 1783, Phillip Scheurer 1757).

Newman's branch appears to be from AL and GA (Joseph Green 1894 AL, Joseph Washington 1854 GA, Newman Shirey- Numan Shire 1814 GA and his father possibly Jacob Shirey 1770 Ireland).

Hope this helps.
Joseph Shirey (1811-1883) Bible

I have the bible originally owned by my GGG grandfather Joseph Shirey (1811-1883 per a post by Bruce Shirey). In three places it is handwritten "Joseph Shirey book bought in Greensburgh April 30, 1866." There are also two handwritten pages by my G grandfather Richard A. Sherbondy written in approx 1896 ("age 30"). One page has the marriages of Joseph and his nine siblings from 1834 to 1887 plus five births from the 1870's and Sarah's death date. The second page has the births of Joseph's fourteen children from both of his wives (1835 to 1863). If you would like a copy, please e-mail me your relation to Joseph and I will send you a pdf version.

Jeffrey D.

I'm looking for information on the family of William N. Shier (1850 census). Children: Rolley, Rebecca, Augustus, Mary, John, James, Eliza and Elias (twins)George and Noah.

William found also on the 1860 census Campbell County. I think he may have been in the Civil War and possibly killed--also sons Rolley and Augustus. Found in 1880 the family is in MS. Martha being in the household of son John along with many of the children.

I would like to hear from anyone that can tie to this family. Many of them moved on to East Texas after 1880.

Martin Shirey is my 3rd great grandfather. All I know of his immediate family is his wife Elizabeth Shealy. From that point I come forward with his son Reuben.

Would love to hear from any relatives.

ssteinbock@quicktel.com

Sandy
