Larry,
I just read the info about the Shoaf Book. My GGGrandfather was married to Annie Shoaf from the Ft. Wayne, Indiana area. I was wondering if his name is discussed in the book. It is Elijah Joseph Faulkner. He and Annie are buried in Lindenwood Cemetery in Ft. Wayne. He was born 1837 and died 1899. Thank you
Ann Tracy

Re: Shoaf Family of Fayette Co PA

Thank you so much for this information, which corresponds to and adds to what I know. We are apparently distantly related. My mother, daughter of Malinda Shoaf and Claude Smell, has often mentioned Clifford. Is this Frank Cliff? I didn't know his first name was Frank. He must have been named for MY Uncle Frank Shoaf, brother of my grandmother, Malinda. Our family has been very close to Uncle Frank's family over the years. I'm still in touch with his grandchildren. His son, Frank Robert (Bob) died a few years ago in NJ. His daughter, Harriet, named for Mary Harriet Newcomer, Polk Shoaf's wife, and Harriet's grandmother, is very close to my mother, Mabel Smell (age 92).

I now live in Charlotte NC, & there are many Shoafs here. I guess they are descendents of Johann Heinrich (John Henry), one of Jacob's sons? I wish I could see a list of all those sons' names! There is so much information out there that does not jive, or is incomplete. One account on the internet listed one of the James Shoafs in our line, coming from Indiana. That cannot be correct.

Thank you again! I now feel like I have correct information.

Nancy Hostetler Watson

Hello,
I am John Shoaf, the great grandson of James Riley (Polk) Shoaf. My Grandfather was Alda and my father Frank Cliff. Here is what I know:

James Riley Shoaf was born on March 6, 1842
He was the son of James Shoaf born 1820 (PA)
He was the son of James Shoaf born 1785 (PA)
He was the son of James Shoaf born 1750 (Germany)
He was the son of Jacob Schaff - Born 1714 (Germany)

Jacob Schaff was a baker in Hornberg in the Wurtemburg district. He took his 9 children to Heilbronn and then to Rotterdam, Holland. They sailed in 1753 on the Phoenix to Philidelphia. The spelling changed to Shoaf while in Franklin County, PA.

Three brothers went West. James and Peter stayed near Uniontown. John continued west to Ohio.

The following is from the journal of Smith Russel Shoaf, son of James Riley Shoaf, who was called Polk. "Two Shoaf brothers came over the summit east of Uniontown in a long distant past. My dad told me about it and tried to point out where they supposed to have encountered a late spring snow storm on this side of the summit. They had two wagons with their family and extra cattle and stock. The snow was so deep they got stranded. They had to make a lean-to between two trees to shelter the stock and fed the stock on sassafras tender shoots and buds to keep them from starving. One of these brothers stayed in Fayette County, the other went west. The true story is that one of our fore-fathers was killed in a barn raising. Back in the time where all large barns were cut and framed in sections on the ground, then they had a big barn raising. It can be surmised it sometimes would be a 'woopy up' bunch showing off, etc."
By the next census in 1880 both he and Abe were dead
Abe and Nancy also named a son after Sampson .
I would love to know more about this line...

Shoaf Family of Fayette Co PA

I am related to the western PA Shoaf Family. My maternal grandmother was Malinda Shoaf, who married Claude Smell. Her father was James Riley Shoaf and her mother was Mary Harriet Newcomer. James Riley was a shepherd near Smithfield (which is near Uniontown). He won awards for his sheep at a World's Fair. Their children's names were: Frank, Nancy Jane, Malinda (Linny), Matilda, John, James C., Daisy, Thomas, Smith,Ruth, & Alda (11 children).

James Riley Shoaf's parents were James Shoaf Jr. and Malinda Bowell. Their children were James Riley, Peter, Mariah, and Jane.

James Jr.'s father, James Sr.(b. 1820 and d. July 3 1886), supposedly brought his mother and sister, Mirah, across the mountains to Fayette County. He was killed by a falling log. Circumstances of life: Began life "under very discouraging circumstances. He could not read or write, but at his death, he left a handsome fortune.

I do not know his wife's name. I would love to know that, and be able to get this line back to the boat and to Germany, which is where I presume they came from. So far I've had no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

My husband was a son of Fred Shoaf who was a son of Alfred Shoaf. They came to IL from Fountain Co. IN.Fred had a brother Elmer Shoaf. Alfred's parents were William and Anna Sowers Shoaf. Both Elmer and Fred Shoaf served as Sheriffs of Champaign co., IL.
Charlie...

John and Mary were indeed the parents of Albert. John's obituary in 1873 reads as follows: "John Shoaff, Thursday Jan 30, 1873 of Edenburg, Pa at son Albert's home in Neshannock Twp. He was 77 years old."

Additionally, the 1850 Neshannock census enumerates dwelling number 72 with John 54, Mary 54, Peter 26, John 22, and Albert 15. Let me know if you need a copy of this census and I will email it to you.

My information reflects the William you inquire about as the son of Adam & Comfort Bay Shoaff and the grandson of Peter & Elizabeth Minks Shoaff. The source for this was a fellow Shoaff researcher.

Are you a descendant of Albert's line?

Or are you the Charles Ruby, son of Charles Alfred & Doris Jo Hartzell Ruby? If so, we are related on the Kaufman and Wimer lines. I have plenty of information to share. Let me know if you're interested.

Email me at kejafu@windstream.net

Kevin
Shoaf Family of Westmoreland PA

I am a daughter of Rosella Shoaf , Gdaughter of Marion "Bud" Shoaf and Mary Shasko and GGdaughter of Edward Noah Shoaf and Lillian Wilson. My mother passed away last year and left me hundreds of pictures and documents related to the family. I have very good information all the way back to Edward Noah Shoaf , even signed documents by him listing all of his children and dates born. The pictures are really in excellent condition and there are lots of them. Many of them are labeled. The large majority of the pictures are dated between about 1900 and 1960.
I am happy to share / email or even give some photos away if you are looking for old pictures. I would also be happy to share the research I have done. I need some help past Edward Noah - I need information on his father and father's father. I would also ask for some help in identifying some people in return.
