Okay...here's what I have -- I'm going to do this backwards since it's easier for me to keep track of everyone, but I'll try to make it easy to follow: (For most of this info., I have the "proof" that satisfies me --- either census records, marriage license, wills, etc.
HEZEKIAH "QUENTIN" SHOCKLEY - b. abt 1839
md. Sallie E. Parker on 22 Apr 1862
1870 census shows Hezekiah, 31; Sallie, 33; John Henry, 11; Elijah P., 7; Edward, 6 mos.; Levi, 3; William Parker, 15.
My grandmother remembers "Uncle Bill Parker," saying he was Sallie's "baseborn" son. John Henry is my g-mother's g-father. I have his death certificate showing Quentin and Sally as his parents.
In 1880 Mortality Schedule, Quentin Shockley, age 38 3/12, farmer, died Sept of fever. Sallie E. Shockley, age 44, died Sept of fever.
1880 census shows their son, John Henry, age 22, with younger siblings as follows: Elijah P., 17; Levi E(?), 14; Edward, 12; Cora E., 3 and Elizabeth Casey, 70 as housekeeper.
Quinton & Sallie's son, Edward M. (29) md. Annie M. Riggin (22) on 29 Dec. 1898.
In Hammond Cemetery, there is a Levin Z. Shockley (1868-1961), "son of Hezekiah and Sallie Shockley", buried next to Gertrude F. (Hammond) Shockley.
I have a lot of information on the descendants of Quentin's John Henry, since they are my direct line.
QUENTIN'S FATHER:
SAMPSON D. SHOCKLEY
md Nancy Sturgis 21 Aug 1833
md Millie Haddock 18 Dec 1849
This is the part where I'm not sure. Worc. Co. marriage licenses show a license issued to Sampson Shockley and Nancy Sturgis on the above date. On 5 Jul 1837, Deed Book 4, Worcester County, p. 449, shows Sampson Shockley of Worcester County sold land to Hezekiah Shockley, 1/4 part of a tract of land....formerly belonging to Joshua Sturgis, late of Worcester County, dec., that descended to my wife, Nancy by the death of her father, Joshua Sturgis. According to another researcher, the only Hezekiah Shockley of full age in 1837 (record made no provision for sale to a minor), was Hezekiah Davis Shockley.
1850 census shows Sampson D. Shockley, 37, farmer, with a Mary H., 37; Eliza A., 16, daug, Hezekiah "Z", 12, son; Elijah L., 9, son; Sarah E., 7,daug; Mary C., 6, daug, Sampson Ratcliff, 1, son and Mary Housier, 70. Looking at the original census, I believe Hezekiah's middle initial is actually a "Q" not a "Z." In the Shockley binders at Naab Center, I found a notation that there was also listed in the same household, a John, b. 1850 and an Ellen, b. 1804. I think this is also a transcription mistake..her birthdate should be 1854. Although I did not pull the original census here (my information came from the census transcription), I believe this notation to be correct, with the exception of Ellen's birth year.
In 1860 a Sampson Shockley, age 50, farmer, died of manustia (whatever that is).
1860 Census shows Mollie, 50 as head of household with Sampson's children (hence my assumption that the "Millie" Haddock above is this Sampson's wife). The children listed in this census are as follows: Quentin, 22; Elijah, 19; Mary, 15; Ratcliff, 12; John, 10; Ellen, 6.
My only problem with this is I've seen another posting posted on this site or another genealogy site that said the census listed this family as being black. I don't always believe what I read until I find something that proves it and I haven't had a chance to look up the original census yet, so I don't know if that particular posting is correct.
On 23 Feb 1871, a Sampson R. (22) md. Eliza E. Smullen (22). I was assuming that this was Sampson D's son since the age was right, but I have no proof of that. There is another Samson R in the 1880 census who is listed as age 30, but with a wife, Angeline, age 18, a daug., Ledina, age 8 and Hannah Wainwright, 16, sister-in-law. So this one has me confused. Is it another Sampson or the same one, who married a 2nd time...the ages of Sampson in both incidents are in line with Sampson Ratcliff.
On 14 Mar 1866 an Elijah L. Shockley md. Mary Givans, which I'm assuming is also Sampson D.'s son but, again, have not proven it yet.
FATHER OF SAMPSON D. (1st Possibility):
HEZEKIAH D. SHOCKLEY
I have a copy of the will of Hezekiah Shockley, dated 24 Jul 1856, wherein he leaves everything to his son, Sampson D. Shockley. Sampson is also the executor of his Will.
The events I have uncovered for Hezekiah Shockley are as follows:
12 Mar 1806 Eli Showell sold several pcs. of land to Hezekiah D. Shockley
1817 Hezekiah D. Shockley patented 580 acres of land
11 Nov 1826 - Excerpt from Cambridge Chronicle - "Hezekiah D. Shockley, Givan's Liberty, consolation, saw mill; Mary Shockley, wd of Thomas, willed to you by S. Shockley." Don't know exactly what all this means -- I believe the Givan's Liberty is reference to land, but don't know for sure. Also...Mary Shockley widow of Thomas...is that Thomas Shockley or are they using Mary Shockley (her maiden name) who is a widow of someone by the last name of Thomas?
1850 Census shows Hezekiah D., age 70 (interesting bit -- occupation listed as "resting and eating"), a Mary W., age 61 and a Mary A., 17, living in the household of Benjamin and Annis F. Johnson, ages 36 and 26, respectively. Also in this household are Elijah P. Johnson, 7; Benjamin I. Johnson, and Mary E. Johnson, age 11/12. (Naming conventions connected to Shockleys)
Okay...now comes major confusion for me:
I had been thinking that the above Hezekiah D. and Sampson D. belonged to my direct line. What I know for a fact is that Quentin is my direct line...my grandmother remembers that her g-grandfather's name was Quentin Shockley. My confusion is the Sampson D.
I have another Sampson D., the son of Benjamin Shockley and Sarah "Sally" Reddish, that was born about the same time as the Sampson D. above -- 1813-15. This is the info I have on Benjamin and Sally:
PARENTS OF SAMPSON D. SHOCKLEY (2nd Possibility)
BENJAMIN SHOCKLEY (B. abt 1790 - Worcester County)
md Sarah "Sally" Reddish (b. abt. 1790 - Maryland) on 27 Mar 1807 in Worcester County.
They migrated to Ohio at some point since their children were listed as being born there.
Benjamin & Sally's children were:
Elijah Shockley - b. abt 1810 - Ross County, OH
Joanne Shockley - b. abt 1814 - Highland County, OH
Enoch Shockley - b. abt 1815 - Ohio
Sampson D. Shockley - b. abt 1815 (md. Mary _____)
John Shockley v. abt 1817
Benjamin P. b. Apr 1820 - Highland County, OH
Seth Shockley b. abt 1822
Narcissa Shockley b. abt 1824 - Ohio
Andrew Jackson b. abt 1826
As you can see, the naming conventions are in place here as well...Sampson, John and Benjamin. I have info. going further back, just don't know how to connect them. It seems that the Hezekiah's, Sampsons, Johns and Benjamins are all part of the same line....I'm just not sure how. If I can get over the hurdle of connecting Sampson D. with his parents, I think I can connect him further back...seems I'm either missing something or can't see it -- which may be the case since I've read over my notes over and over trying to make the connection.
Hopefully, I've not made it too difficult to follow. If, after comparing my notes to yours, you have any suggestions, please let me know, so I can't stop pulling my hair out. :)
