SHOCKLEY/SHACKLETT

Was the original name of the Shockley families SHACKLETT? Shacklett has been spelled in many different ways and was a French surname JACQUELOT, with pronunciation similar to Shockley as the name became Americanized. I am a descendant of John SHACKLETT and Barbara QUICK of Fayette County PA. One of their daughters married Thomas HORNE (b. ca. 1775). An outlaw in later years (mid 1800's) named Tom HORN had a son named Shackley. Could Tom Horn, the outlaw, be related in some way to the Shockley/Shacklett family?

My father was a Shockley and I have been tracing his roots. If you get a chance go to Hermann Missouri. I found lots of info on the Criders and Shockleys. Rachel Crider born Oct. 11, 1812. She married Thomas V. Shockley March 26, 1829. Rachel parents were Daniel and Barbara (Walter)Crider. Barbara was a widow of Nicholas Walter. Danel and Barbara were married in Rowan Co., NC. Her and Daniel moved from Cabarrus County NC in 1818 and arrived in Gasconade County. They are buried in the Barbarick Cemetery. Daniel died in 1842 and Barbara a few years later. Thomas was one of 12 children. I show his father was Daniel and mother Rachel. Crider was spelled Krider in NC. The Gasconade County Historical Society Archives have lots of info. The Criders and Shockleys settled there. I found a obit on Donald Shockley, he died 9-26-1989. Thomas and Sophronia's son. He was born 9-18-1901 in Washington, MO and died there. Address was Route 1, Owensville, MO. Three surving sons Leo Shockley, wife Barbara, Donald and wife Beverly, Dennis and daughter Geneva Hendrix. Burial was in the Howard Cemtery at Bland, MO. Maybe you could contact one of the sons and they would have info also. Archie Shockley was one of Thomas & Sophronia sons also. He died 1-21-1977. He lived and was buried in Chamois, MO. From what i read at the society Isaiah was a 1st cousin to Thomas. Isaiah's family were from White County, TN, while Thomas' was from Virginia.

Thanks for your reply. I'm also the great great granddaughter of William and Henrietta. I'm trying to find out anything about their life together - I know all the children names, dob's, etc. Would love to know more about Henrietta - I've tried very hard to find out about her life prior to marrying William. She came from Rutherfordton, NC - found her there in the census. She named a son of hers (my great grandfather)Govan after her brother. That name traveled down to my father and 2 brothers and continues on. I also have a picture of both William and Henrietta. Do you know anything about their lives together, anything about Henrietta prior to marrying William (possibly her father - lots of speculation on that one) and anything about William prior to marrying Henrietta. Thanks for your help. Sophia

granddaughter of Gideon L Shockley

I am looking for information concerning a girl, born ca 1901 in Washington State, named Thelma L- The last name is difficult to read, perhaps Banne or Barne. She is in the census of her grandparents Gideon L and Lucinda Shockley. Gideon and Lucinda married in Arkansas, the second marriage for both. Gideon was married to a Margaret Dunn previously and I believe that Lucinda was married to Margarets brother Guilford Dunn. These were civil war years and it would appear that Margaret and Guilford have died. Guliford was in the confederate service.
Any information concerning Thelma and who her parents were would be welcome.
Gideon and Lucinda moved around to several states before they settled in fruit farming in San Bernadino Co., Rialto California. This is where Thelma appears on the census in 1910.

I don't have it on my database, but posibly in some papers somewhere, but I think that Thomas Shockley who died 1812-4, died at the home of his grandson, a son of Thomas seniors son, Thomas jr. The impression stood because Gideon recieved charge of his estate, but Thomas chose to live, or for whatever reason lived with his son's Thomas's son.

The two Elijah's were related. The one b. 1813 in Ohio was the son of Benjamin Shockley and Sarah Reddish. This Benjamin Shockley was the son of Sampson Shockley and wife Elizabeth. Sampson was the son of Benjamin Shockley and Mary Rose Noble. So if I'm counting correctly, the two Elijah's were second cousins.

This Elijah Shockley was the son of William Noble Shockley and Elizabeth Ann Livingston originally of Worcester Co., MD. William Noble Shockley was the son of Elijah Shockley b. abt 1765 and Sylpha Noble. The Elijah Shockley b. abt 1765 was the son of Benjamin Shockley and Mary Rose Noble. Benjamin was the son of John Shockley and Sarah Stanback. John Shockley was the son of the immigrant, Richard Shockley and wife Ann Boyden.

You'll find them in my "Hill - McCree Public Tree" on Ancestry.com. As time permits, I'm trying to put all the data I have into that tree. Most Shockley descendants in the US go back to the same Richard Shockley. I have your Leona in my tree, but only knew about her birth. I would appreciate info on her marriage, children, and their descendants. vlhill@airmail.net Vicki Hill (a Shockley descendant through the Georgia branch of the family)

Hello Carol,

Wilson Shockley was the son of Hiram Thomas Shockley (my gggrandfather) and Nancy Jane Ousley.

Rebecca and Lenna were his wives.

Where in Brownfield is their gravesite since my ggrandfather Henry (and Wilson's older brother) lived in Brownfield until his death in 1930.

What can I tell you about this Shockley branch?

Regards,
Cynthia Shockley
