John C Shoemaker

I am hoping someone can help me with a brick wall in my family.
John C Shoemaker born about 1842 in Ohio and was the son of Joseph (b abt 1821 in Ohio and d 1901 in Ohio) and Susanna
(b abt 1823 in Maryland). He married Rosa Johnston and had three children: Ida Mae Shoemaker, William Shoemaker and Elizabeth Shoemaker.
John was in the service during the Civil War but there is confusion on it. The family stated he was killed while in service and a John C Shoemaker did die as a result of wounds received at the Battle of Shiloh according to government records. However, the ages do not agree. The John C Shoemaker killed at Shiloh was 32 years of age when he listed at Painsville, Ohio on January 29, 1862 in Co. E, reth Regiment Ohio Infantry and stated he was born in Germany. It is known that our John C. Shoemaker was born in Ohio and should have been about 20 years old then. He was in service at that time as he later became a member of the Grand Army of the Republic organization. He definitely was not killed as he is found in the 1870 census in Alliance, Ohio.
Sometime between March 1877 and 1880, Joh disappeared. According to the census he deserted his wife. It is not known where he went or where and when he died. This is where I need help if anyone can help provide me the information that is missing. John's wife, Rosa met a tragic death when she was struck by a train after stepping off a platform in Alliance, Ohio. Articles in the paper only states she leaves three children and was a sister of the City Marshal Johnston. Thank you.

KY Kentucky Shoemaker Line/ Lee County?

Hi,

I am looking for a particular Shoemaker family in Lee County, KY. I am particularly trying to find the relatives of Leanord J. Shoemaker, born in 1912 WWII Army Veteran, served in the South Pacific.

I found him listed in the 1920 Federal Census in Lee County, in the town Fincastle, KY. Family information on the Census was as follows (and I've included any other information I was able to glean on each sibling from different sources):

Mother: Sarah Head of Household and Divorced b. abt. 1875 in KY (other possible names for her are Sallie Frasure, Sally France, and Sally Shoemaker)

Sister: Virginia b. abt. 1905 (no further information on her)

Sister: Gladys R. Shoemaker b. on September 25, 1912 in Lee County, KY. Mother listed as Sallie Frasure on the Kentucky birth index(this could be a typo, as well)

Brother: Jessie b. abt. 1908

Brother: Kenneth D. Shoemaker b. Sept. 25, 1915. Mother listed as Sallie France on the the Kentucky Birth Index.

This is all the information I was able to find. If anyone is related or knows more information, PLEASE email me at france@wavecable.com If you reply to maggiesmemories, I won't get the messge, because I'm just borrowing my aunt's account. Thank you!

Frank Shoemaker

Born in Wurttemburg, March 1835, I am looking for his parents and siblings. Frank immigrated around 1849 and settled first in Philadelphia. Joined the ranks of the Union and after the war, moved to Wilmington, DE. All census records on him show his name as "Frank" and I don't know his middle name. His wife's name was Catherine (Coler?)

If anyone knows which Philadelphia family he belongs to, that would help me tremendously. I found records showing the original name might have been "Shumacher". Immigration records have been inconclusive.

Can anyone help in locating his true family?
Thomas Shoemaker Shot in Greenville AR

On October 21, 1839 Thomas E. Shoemaker was shot in the breast by Philip P Johnston in the Town of Greenville, Clark County Arkansas. Clark County court documents state that "Whereupon T.E. Shoemaker a witness on the part of the state being produced and sworn states that as he walked up from Mr. Wards office he met P.P. Johnston and brother, and P.P. Johnston and P.P. Johnston said he had and account against him and commenced to curse him and a quarrel commenced, he dew his pistol and shot him in the right breast and struck him over the head."

Apparently Thomas Shoemaker was not too badly injured, as he appeared in court on the same day he was shot.

I have no known connection to Thomas Shoemaker, but my GGGF John Anthony Shoemaker appeared in the same court six months earlier concerning a bad debt. Therefore, I assume that they are related. I have been unable to locate Thomas Shoemaker in any census records in AR or elsewhere, or in any other records for that matter. I do not believe that Thomas died from his injuries, as he appeared in court on the same day he was shot. Also, Philip Johnston was being persecuted for shooting with intent to kill, not murder.

Anyone have any idea who this Thomas E. Shoemaker was, and where he went? I'd also like to hear from anyone researching Shoemakers in S. Arkansas from the 1830s through 1880 or so.

Adrian Daily Telegram, Wednesday, December 19, 2007, pg A2
Dwight Shoemaker Obit
DEERFIELD — Dwight Shoemaker, age 71, of Deerfield passed from this earth to his heavenly home, unexpectedly, Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007.
Dwight was born May 12, 1936, in Monroe, to Irvin Frederick and Minnie Elizabeth (Long) Shoemaker, and spent his youth in Carleton and Petersburg. On Dec. 1, 1956, he married the love of his life, Twila Stevens. The couple shared their lives together for 61 years, along with their three daughters and their families. Dwight graduated from Summerfield High School, and from Ford Motor Company Trade School. He worked as a Machine Repairman for Ford Motor Co. of Ypsilanti, for 39 years, retiring in 1999. He was an ordained minister and Elder with the Lower Light Church. He served as the Principal of Holiness Christian School, Petersburg, for nine years and as the Lower Light Church Conference Board Treasurer for 25 years.
Dwight’s devotion to God, his playful wit and many precious memories will live on in his beloved wife, Twila; his three daughters, Delight Shoemaker of Monroe, Jeanne (Axel Victor) Saren of Deerfield and Crystal Cornoyer of Monroe; his son-in-law Axel Victor Saren II; and his four grandchildren, Ryan, Steven, Clayton and Victoria, all of whom he loved very deeply and spent his life caring for. Also remaining is his brother, George (Meg) Collins, of Port Charlotte, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Lester Durwood Shoemaker; a sister, Helen Studnicka; and a son-in-law, Michael Cornoyer.
Dwight was a man of quiet and strong conviction. He enjoyed cooking, loving to experiment with new dishes, and was a life-long student of God’s Word, He possessed natural engineering, mechanical and mathematical abilities which aided him in many projects throughout his life. He will be profoundly missed by his beloved family and friends. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.”
Friends may call at the Capaul Funeral Home, Ida, from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday. He will lie in state at the Deerfield Free Methodist Church Thursday from noon until services at 1 p.m. The Revs. Phillip and Michael Arnold will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant view Cemetery, Petersburg.
Memorial contributions for Mr. Shoemaker may be made to the Cherry Street Mission, Toledo, or the Salvation Army. Online condolences may be sent to www.capaulfuneralhome.com.
I do not research this family.
Solomon Shoemaker (1826-1864)

I am trying to get more information on the roots and branches of this ancestor.

I know that Solomon was born in Ohio, and that his parents were named John SHOEMAKER and Susannah SHAFER. They were from Pennsylvania. Solomon married Mary HAYS or HAYES in Ohio in 1849. Their children were Joseph, Malorus, Manora O., James H., Charles Melvin, and Ashbell Willard. Solomon died in the Civil War. I have found and photographed the cemetery marker for Solomon and Mary his wife. It is frustrating that I can find nothing definitive about Solomon's parents in Pennsylvania records.

I have very little information on any of the children other than Charles. I do know that Ashbell married an Anna May GAGE in 1886.

Any help I can give or receive would be appreciated. :)
Shoemaker Pioneers - look-up

Does the book “Shoemaker Pioneers” mention a John D. Shoemaker born in Alabama about 1830? The information I have been able to locate on him is as follows: He was apparently married twice. First wife unknown, but they had at least two children. A son, Eli L. Shoemaker born in Illinois about 1860 and a daughter, Sina M. Shoemaker born about 1868 in Missouri. John Shoemaker married 2nd Mary J. Kennedy on 07 May 1869 in Stoddard County, Missouri. They are in Benton County, Arkansas in the 1870 census. By 1880 they in Marion County, Arkansas with two more children, Sarah A. Shoemaker born about 1872 in Arkansas and William D. Shoemaker. Born February 1880 in Arkansas. This John D. Shoemaker served in the Union Army with the 60th Illinois Infantry, Company E. Would like to know what part of Alabama he was from if at all possible. I have no know relationship with this family, but in 1870 he was living next to Calvin Lester (Luster) whose first wife was Winnie Catherine Shoemaker from Limestone County, Alabama. Any information will be most appreciated. Thanks!

(Selfish reasons, of course; this could be my lineage.)

In fact, any male Shoemaker joining the project would be of benefit to the project as a whole and specifically to those whose direction of research is unknown.

The test itself is painless. The results are pretty fascinating to those involved.
Regards,
Karen in California

Shoemakers from Loudoun VA to Colerain, PA 1750's to early 1800's???

I am trying to make heads or tails of the information on the Jacob Shoemaker family that lived and maybe married in Loudoun, Virginia and ended up in Colerain, Bedford County, PA...The information on the internet is all screwed up and I would like to try to find out if there is someone out there who really knows who is who and who belongs to who???

Here is what I know (or think I know):
Jacob Shoemaker was born in about 1758 in Loudoun, Virginia (I still need to go further back - but haven't gotten that far yet)...he married Elizabeth Exline who was born in about 1760 (there are dates on the internet but I don't know if they are correct)...The internet says Elizabeth was born in Chester County, PA...but I wonder if this is correct since it appears they married in Loudoun County, VA..so that is one of my first questions...was she born in PA...they were supposedly married in VA in 1788.

The next information is about their children....the internet shows that they had a bunch of kids...but the first kid listed is Adam...but Adam is listed as being born in 1778 in Loudoun, VA...now if he is their kid...and he was born in 1778...he would have been born 10 years BEFORE they married - I don't think this is right???

The next kid listed is John...listed as born in 1785...also before they were supposedly married. Then Christina..b. 1787..again before they were married. Then Bernard..b. 1788..surprise!!..the same year they were married!!! Then there are 7 other children listed...some born in VA..and some born in Pennsylvania...some born in VA at the same time others are being born in Pennsylvania...I know that it was a time of great changes in the country...but I don't think that there was a lot of traveling going on where a family traveled that often!!!

So I would be very appreciative of anyone who can shed some light on this family. I realize that facts are often difficult to come by...so it is hard to always verify facts...but from what I could find on later members of this family...it seems that they were somewhat well-known...so hopefully there is someone out there that has some good knowledge on the family. I am trying to get the connection to George S. Shoemaker b. 1793, who is an indirect descendent, clarified.

Thank you so much for reading this email and for any help that can be provided.

I am trying to figure out if my GGGgrandmother's maiden name was Millsaps or Shumaker!

She was married to Elza/Elzie Myers, son of Ezekiel Myers and lived in Wilkes Co. and in 1860 they lived in Iredell County.

In the 1850 census in Wilkes, they have a "Betsy Shoemake(r)" living with them, and old enough to be Caroline's mother.

And on her daughter, Eliza Robena Myer's death certificate, Caroline's maiden name is Shumaker and she was born in Iredell County.

BUT, on the cemetery record at Round Mountain Baptist Church in Wilkes, where Caroline and Elzie are buried, her maiden name is listed as Millsaps!

Any information on her and her family would be greatly appreciated!

For some words that passed between the 2 about a mere trifle, SMITH returned after the lapse of an hour or 2 to where SHOEMAKER was at work, armed with a bowie knife and swore to kill him. He commenced the attack by the use of such epithets as tempted Mr. SHOEMAKER to strike at him with a plank, when SMITH plunged the knife he held secreted in his hand, into SHOEMAKER's abdomen. The wounded man then turned, fled and was pursued and cut in several other places. He died from the effects of his wounds a few days after. SMITH was arrested and is now in jail. Deceased was an amiable, excellent man, highly respected and in his unfortunate death is much lamented.

Evergreen Cemetery burial: Irene Hemingway(Shoemaker)

Hello fellow researchers! I recently visited Evergreen Cemetery in Southgate KY and located a Taber family plot and buried in said plot with my grandfather and great grandfather was a female named Irene Hemingway...upon further investigation I found out that this was a burial plot for a child of 4 years of age...Irene Hemingway b: 4/10/1910 and d: 3/31/1915 parents listed as: John Hemingway & Bessie SHOEMAKER. My late grandfather (Harry Edward Taber d: 1963) was the lot owner and I do not know how or even if this little girl or her parents were related to my family. My gfather resided in OH so I started lookign for a Bessie Shoemaker in OH and foudn 2 of particular interest: a Bessie Irene Shoemaker who was born & died in OH, and a Bessie S. Shoemaker who was from OH and had parents listed as: Andrew B. Shoemaker & Mary Ellen Sturgis. (The latter of the two particularly struck me because My late grandmother (Helen Anna Kampel) was at one time married to a man named Walter Lionel Sturgis. Coincidence? I do not know. I would, however like to find out if and how she is elated to my family or at the very least locate her ancestors so that she is not forgotten. I did take pictures of her grave at the cemetery. She has no headstone and her gravesite is ina bit of disrepair as it has sunken quite a bit. Her funeral home information is on it's way to me, so by all means, let me know if you have any information about this little child or her family. Thank you kindly...good luck to you in your own geneology endeavors! Regards~~~Laurie from Cincy

Charlie Cleveland Shoemaker/ Alabama

If anyone has any information on Charlie Cleveland Shoemaker from Jefferson County, Alabama I would greatly appreciate anything at all. He was my great grandfather and I have found nothing on him. He was married to Cora Buckalew. All I know is he died in Kilby Prison in Alabama which would account for the family never speaking of him! He had two (that I know of) children Leslie Hubert Shoemaker and Bud Shoemaker. Cora died young and the boys were raised by her parents. The only record I have found of any of them is a census of 1930 that shows Leslie(my grandfather) was an inmate at Alabama Boys Industrial School at the age of 14. That's it. That's all I have to go on. If anyone has any info at all I would really appreciate it.

Shoemaker - Jake and Missouri, Allamakee Iowa to Reno Kansas

Looking for additonal information and/or descendents of Jake and Missouri Shoemaker. Jake, Missouri and children moved from Allamakee county Iowa to Reno county KS in the late 1870s. In the 1880 KS census, Reno county, Medford, can be found J (52) and wife Missouri (31) along with the following children, George H. (11), Hiram (10), Emma M (8), William M. (7) and Harriot (10 months). All the children except Harriot were born in Iowa. It appears that eventually Jake and Hiram move to Pine county, MN.
