In the 1840 Arkansas census, Independence, there is a John Shook that is possibly Albert father. Does anyone know for sure?

Albert B. Shook has land deeds where he bought land in Lawrence and Independence Co., AR. I have sent for these applications from the National Archives. His wife was Terresa ????? Can't find a last name. They are in the 1850 census with a child named George W. Shookborn in 1848, Tennessee. In the 1860 Arkansas census they have George and Nancy C.born in Ar in 1852, William J.in 1857 and Francis M. ONeal in 1858. After this Albert and Terresa are not heard of that I can find.

Where were your Shook and Williams families before they came to Arkansas? I have Andrew Williams b 1816 in Nova Scotia m. Margaret MacFarland
Their son, Hugh Williams b 1858 in Waite, Maine m. Cynthia J. Clook whose daughter Bertha May Williams b 1884 in Waite, Maine married William Herbert Shook b 1877 in Apple Creek, Ohio. The Shook line goes back through Pennsylvania to Germany. Bertha and William are my grandparents.
I also recently found a David Williams b b1810 in New Brunswick, Canada m. Experience who I think is a brother of my Andrew Williams.
The Shook family going backward from William are:
Daniel b 1842 in Ohio m Jane Young
John III Shook b 1810 in PA m Elizabeth Kindig
John Shook b 1782 in PA m Christina Long
Johannes Schuck b 1861 in PA m Barbara Ohl
Hans Shook b 1728 in German m Catherine
Johannes Georg Shuck b 1694 in Germany m. Maria

I don't have a documentation for most of this...There are so many of the same names especially Jacobs and Johns in this line that it is very easy to get tangled up. I think this has happened with previous researcher. I am trying to focus just on those born in the US for now. I am sure these lines, especially the Shooks, will match up somewhere along the way. I'd love to hear more about your family. Betsy Hansen, Meridian, Idaho blhansen@cableone.net
Lena Eberhard's mother Ellen died when Lena was 7 years old and her father, Henry P., had a history of mental illiness. He is listed as an inmate at the Michigan Asylum for the Insane in Kalamazoo in the 1910 US Census, and in the 1920 US Census he is listed as an inmate at the Michigan Asylum for the Criminally Insane in Ionia MI. I was recently speaking with my Uncle Bob who fondly remembers Aunt Lena. I also have a few post cards which were exchanged between Lena and Dora Addicks her Aunt and my Great-Aunt.

Having reread my original post I can see why you might have been confused. The problem is my use of "his". The confusing part of the message should have read:

Samuel married Elizabeth Maysteadt,

Samuel's son William H. married Lena Silken,

William's son Otto married Viva Burritt,

Otto's son Max married Marcella Berry,

I'm Max's son Gary.

Sorry about the confusion.

Oh, I thought your original post was saying that Max was Samuel's son. I had no record of Max until reading your post, so I figured, hey, someone knows the fourth child!

I'm actually only tangently related to the family, so I have no family information, just cold facts found in records, mostly on-line. The above-mentioned Frank Colson was my great-great uncle.
I had never noticed that in the 1900 Census that it indicated Elizabeth had 4 children. A 4th child is not indicated in any other documents I have reviewed, including all census data from 1860 to 1930 and records from the Burr Oak Lutheren Church. Either Eliza had a child that died at birth or there was a mistake in understanding during the census interview.

The only Max I know of in the immeadiate family was my father who was born in 1923 and died in 1997.

One last bit of information is Dora and Henry Addicks had one child a boy unnamed who died at birth and is buried by his mother and father in Coldwater, MI.

Otto was William H. Shook's son and, therefore, Samuel's grandson. Also, Eliza's 1900 census record indicates that she's the mother of four, two of whom ar living. By then, I know William and Dora were still living and Ellen had passed. So, I guess that means Max had died before 1900?

Samuel and Eliza's daughter Dora Shook married Henry Addicks and, if census records are any indication, they had no children or no surviving children.

Samuel and Eliza's daughter Ellen Jane Shook married Henry P. Eberhard. (And, boy, are there a lot of Henry Eberhards around that part of the country!) It seems they had only one surviving child, Lena who appears with grandmother Eliza in later census records. In 1925 she married Frank Alvin Colson (born in Ogle County, Illinois, son of Gustaf Carlsson and Johanna Christinan Andersdotter of Sweden). They had one daughter, Ada D. (probably named after Frank's sister Ada Shockney of Chicago) who died the year after she was born.

Hi: I am a Shook family member from Dutchess County. I leave in the Town Stanford. My grandfather was Homer Shook and his wife was Addie Decker. Homer's father was John Shook born I believe in 1857, his wife was Mary, he was born, I am assuming in Duthcess County. Homer had two brothers John Shook and Virgil Shook. Here things become muddled. I am not sure of Homer's grandfather's name. Henry, or perhaps Harold, born about 1827.

Any information you would care to share would be very helpful. Thanks for you time Charles Hanlon

Have Bernice Lee Shook Funeral Announcement - NEEDS HOME

Hello Shook Family/Researchers:
My name is Anna Honea. In cleaning out my husband's things, while preparing our baby's nursery, I ran across an 1881 Bible. The Bible is in horrible shape. The cover and most of the binding is gone. I was going to throw it away, but I looked through it first. Inside was an original funeral announcement for Bernice Lee Shook, daughter of A.D. and S.A. Shook. If you would like this announcement for your genealogy please contact me only through annahonea@gmail.com. I would prefer that this announcement go to close family to the little girl and I will take that into consideration. We are also willing to ship the Bible if someone wants it, but are asking for exact shipping to be paid in advance. The Bible has no other mention of the Shook family or any other writing in it. I went through every page. Best of luck on your hunt for ancestors. Anna

Livonia was married only once but had no kids as her spouse was infertile. She died and he re-married one Mabel Espin and adopted her kids. In 1926 Ernest Spohn came and got the girls out of the orphanage and EmmaD traveled around Texas for a while with his Circus (had the biggest ferris wheel in texas, as family lore goes) We use to visit them but I was real small so the memory is very fuzzy.(Uncle Bob& Mabel)

I have been told (by a Shook researcher) that I descend from this John Shook and Mary Rose, but I do not have proof to back it up yet. My grandfather is Jacob Shook. He is the first child/son of John and Mary Rose Shook. He was born about 1807 in Allegheny County, PA. He married first Mary or Martha "Mollie" Brown and second my grandmother Sarah Sophia Carter. He died in New Castle, Lawrence County, PA in 1887. His children are Mary Ann, Elizabeth J., Joseph B., John, Marilla, Harry, Alfred, Thomas Roy, Viola (my grandmother), Melissa J. (Jennie), Martha (Mattie), Dallas, Franklin (Frank) and Jacob Shook.

My grandmother Viola Shook married second to William Henry Evans. Their children are Bert (twin), Mae (twin), Corrinne Viola (my grandmother), and William Roy Evans.

I would LOVE to share information with you. This is my mother's membership. My email is keli97@comcast.net.

I look forward to your reply.
Sincerely,
Keli Kovalcik-Spiegel
Dr. Sam,

Is your dad still living and at the same address and phone # in your 2001 message about the Shook family of Methodist preachers in TX?

My grandmother was May Shook Fitts. She and your grandfather Will Shook were siblings. As a child I remember that when my grandmother came to Dallas to visit us we took her to see Uncle Will.

My dad was Joseph Earley Fitts, May's youngest son. He died in 1998. All her children are now deceased and 2 of their spouses are still living (my mom, Dorothy and Uncle Thomas' widow, Annie Ruth).

Anyway, I would like to find out more about the Shook family and share what I have found.

They lived on sisson mountain, in pine plains. A few years ago I went and spoke to the local historian and tried to look up records in the pine plains town hall-there are tons of them... my husband's grandfather and mother basically lived as squatters in the area. There were no birth or death certificates on them.
I believe one of the brothers were named frank and another winfred.

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 16 June 1893 ...

t the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Shook, in this city last Tuesday evening at half past 7 o'clock, Mr. D. M. Purvine and Miss Laura Shook were made as one. The wedding was an extremely quiet affair. Present and witnessing the ceremony were the immediate member of the family, Rev. H. O. Moore, the officiating clergyman, Mra. A. J. Childress, Mr. and Mrs. J. B Harris, Miss Fannie Beard, Robert L. Warren and R. E. Latimer. After the ceremony the couple repaired to the Texas & Pacific depot preparatory to their departure on the west bound cannon ball, but as the train was four hours late the party returned to the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Harris, where a reception was held until the near approach of train time. At 12:30 a.m. the train arrived and Mr. and Mrs. Purvine took their departure for Manitou Springs, Colorado, where a two week's honeymoon will be spent. At the end of that time they will return and make this their home.

Thus, by Cupid's inflexible decree, the social circle of the city has suffered another severe detraction. The Times-Star joins a host of friends in wishing to Mr. and Mrs. Purvine a life of unalloyed pleasure and happiness.

My ancestor was William Wiley Shook he had cousins that went to Texas. I have never traced this branch of the family, but Daniel and Wiley are common names is our family which makes me wonder if there is a connection. Could anyone provide more infromation on Daniel and Wiley Shook. Thanks
