I am descended from Patrick Shortell, who was married to Annie (or Antie) Purcell. They were from Dunnameggan (or Donamegan) near Kilkenny city. Four of their children, Michael, Mary, James and William all came to the US around 1840. I am descended from Michael, who settled in Salem Mass. Does this match any of your info?

My great grandmother, Ann Shortel, married James Kelly on 03 June 1858 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. She died in Jamestown, North Dakota on 24 August 1907. She would have been born around 1836-1838, reportedly in Ireland. I know the names of her children but that is the extent of my knowledge about her. I'm guessing she had siblings but I have no names. Yes, the name has been spelled Shortel, Shortell, Shortelle, Shortal & Shortall. A Shortelle family once resided in Money Creek Township, Houston County in Minnesota back about 1870. There is a Christina Shortall that is doing some research on Shortall's and I'm hoping to hear from her. She will be visiting Des Plaines, IL next month to look at some records. Do you have any info on your Shortell's that might include an Ann, Anne or Anna?
Regards, Harold Kelly

As we speak, write, communicate, my mother is calling my aunt, Edith Shortell to find out my grandfather's parents name.
I still can't make a match on Michael Shortell, but maybe we're getting closer!

The Michael Shortell in my family was born in Kilnagranagh, County Tipperary in 1832. He emigrated from Liverpool to New Orleans in 1851 and settled in the Galena, IL area.

I have information on two other Michael Shortells. The first was born in Ireland in 1834. He came to New York in 1850 and died in Eagle, WI in 1911.

His son, Michael Shortell, was born about 1874. He died in Onawa, Monona County, IA in 1924 and was buried at St. Theresa Church, in Eagle WI. He worked as a telegrapher for the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad, and also worked at a bank.

I have not been able to connect either of these to may family. Let me know if you make a connection.

Pat

Nita -

I believe we are related. My great-great-grandfather was Nicholas Shortall/Shortell of Sawkill, Kingston Township, New York. He lived near Timothy and served with him in the Civil War. They were both stone cutters in the nearby quarries. They are buried near each other in St. Ann's Cemetery.

The Shortalls/Shortells originated in County Kilkenny, Ireland, as is indicated on Nicholas's gravestone (not in Cork). I have census information about the families. Please contact me, if interested, at our new e-mail: njryan@optonline.net.
Thanks. - Joe Ryan
