Hi I have the book "The Shorter Family, England, America and Africa in the History of a family" by Avlward Shorter and Maggie Price Taylor. I was surprise that I did not find your William Shorter born c. 1790 in/near Shipbourne, Kent. The only places in Kent were Bybrook, Hothfield, Great Chart and Westwell per this book. Sir Robert Walpole's wife was Catherine Shorter b. abt 1682. Of course, this is all much erlier than your c1790 birth.

In my family tree I have a William Shorter bapt.19 Oct 1788 son of William & Elizabeth Shorter. They had eleven children in all.

Around 1790 I think this was only family of that name which includes a Thomas Shorter (brother of Willam Senior?)and his wife Eleanor who don't appear to have had any children baptised in Shipbourne
If you want more detail of William senior and Elizabeth please let me know. I have transcribed this info from original records

Emma was the daughter of Thomas SHORTER and Mary CROUCH[ER].

Thomas c1818-82 and Mary x1819-63 appear to have been from Wrotjam, Kent and had daughters Mary 1847 and and Eliza 1850 and son Thomas 1843. Thomas remarried Ellen Anne CLOUY nee WESTON/WATSON and had Florence 1866.

My cousin has an ancestor Minnie May Shorter b. 1877 in Milton NY who was the daughter of Benjamin Shorter Jr and the grand daughter of Benjamin Shorter Sr and his wife Dolly Anne Mackey(she is the daughter of Wiliam Mackey and Margaret Anderson.) This is all I know and my cousin shared this with me because I have the Shorter line in VA. Have you found a Benjamin Shorter in your NY line?

I am looking for any information on Thomas SHORTER who was born in Kent, England c1818 and died c1882 in Deptford. He was a coachman. He married Mary CROUCH(ER) in 1842 in the Malling registration district.

They had Thomas 1843-, emma 1845-, mary 1847- and Eliza 1850.

He married secondly Ellen Anne CLOUT nee WESTON/WATSON in 1870 and had Florence 1866- (illegitimately).

Joseph Greaves and Mary Shorter were my maternal gr-gr-gr-grandparents. Mary was the neice of Gov. John Gill Shorter of Alabama 1861-63. I would like to exchange information on this family with you. I don't have any infomation on Henry Shorter or Sarah Gresham. Records I've found show John Gill Shorter, had at least the folling siblings, Eli Sims Shorter (1823-1879) buried in Fairview Cemetery in Eufaula, William James Shorter (1826-1839), Sampson Slaughter Shorter (1834-1840), Sophia Herndon Shorter Lomax ( 1830-1850), and Emily Frances Shorter Kolb (1816-1839) and they lived and are buried in Eufaula, Barbour Co., AL John Gill Shorter was born in Monticello, GA on April 3, 1818 and died May 29, 1872 was married to Mary Jane Battle. Gov. Shorter and siblings father was Dr. Reuben Clark Shorter, Sr.(1787-1853), Physician and planter m. to Mary Butler. Check out "Keyword" Eufaula, Barbour County, Alabama cemeteries, and go to Shorter Cemetery.

Hi, The 1810 Census of SC Sumter Co Clarendon has a Wm Shorter listed with no numbers under the free white males and females but it has 5 listed under other free person except Indians. I'm not sure what this is all about do you know?

Census for South Carolina, Sumter Co Clarendon has David Shorter with the following: one male between 16-26 and one male over 45 plus two females 0 to 10, two females between 10 and 16, one female between 16 and 26 and one female over 45.

I just wanted to add that I know I have a cousin named Barbara Towers who moved to Austrailia several years ago. I believe she had a brother named Neville. They lived in England before she went to Austrailia. I believe it was somewhere around London.

I am looking for my grandfather's family. His name was Edward Shorter. He was born in London England. He immigrated to the US, Phila. Pa. Married Jane Long from Dublin Ireland and had about 9 children, one a set of twins, my mother Dorothy Shorter and her twin brother Richard Shorter on May 7, 1907. Some of his childrens names were Mabel, Eleanor, Amelia, Dorothy, Richard, George, Walter, Charles. There may have been 1 more but I don't have all of the info. I am the last of my siblings and aside from my husband, children and grancchildren, I have no known family and would like to do my geneology and maybe find my family. Yes, this is correct. David and Michel had the following children:
1. William Shorter born about 1780. He married twice we think. First wife is unknown. The second wife is Harriet Gibhart.(Her family was from Maryland)
2. Elizabeth Shorter born 1785 married William Raffield, Jr.
3. Hannah Shorter born 1790 married Thomas Richbourg
4. Sarah Shorter born 1791 married William Raffield, SR.
5. Judy Shorter born 1793 married Lawrence Franklin and she died in 1823. Her husband died in 1822.
6. Dorcas R. Shorter born about 1795 (never married)
7. Ann Michel Shoter born 1804 married Dr. John Samuel Richbourg and moved to Pike Co., AL

No, I wondered about that also. This William is David and Michel Shorter's son. (I have both of their Wills) I have no idea what happened to them on this census because all of them were back by the next census. Maybe they relocated to another area briefly during the census time. I think it showed 5 non-family members living in the house.

William Shorter had the following children:

Caroline Shorter
Rebecca E. Shorter

It was part of a deed dated Dec. 9, 1800. William Dreggars and Mary Dreggars his wife of Clarendon County, SC to David Shorter (in trust as guardian of BLACK JAMEY PEARSON, freeman of color)...goes on and on.

Another document shows: Black Jamey Pearson was formally property of William Pearson, deceased. Jamey Pearson purchased a negro woman named Judy and her child, Phoebe on Jan. 1, 1790.(Bill of Sale)
