READ this! Valuable resource for Shotwell Family research

I have found that Ancestry has scanned the book "Annals of our Colonial Ancestors" by Ambrose Shotwell. It has many family stories and lots of birth/marriage/death information for Shotwells in America from the 1600s to 1895. If you are related to Shotwells and haven't checked this resource yet for your information, you should certainly do so. Here is a link:

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=BookList&dbid=1431...

or you can use the Search link on the Ancestry menu, pick card catalog and search for "Annals of our Colonial Ancestors" it should be easy to search and find.

A. D. Shotwell, Manchester VA (now Richmond VA) 1901

Google Books has for free viewing or download a book called RICHMOND, VIRGINIA: THE CITY ON THE JAMES. It is a Chamber of Commerce book published in 1902/3.

On page 132 is a photo (or possibly a photo of an oil painting) of A. D. SHOTWELL. Also a drawing of his factory, A. D. Shotwell and Co., Tannery and Sumac Mill.

I am not related to the SHOTWELLs, but a friend who is very distantly related tells me this was Albert Dallas Shotwell.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who knows about his daughter Fannie, who married Clarence VADEN.

Manchester merged with Richmond a few years after this book was published. It was south of the James River, while Richmond was north of the River.

keyesperry [at] gmail [dot] com

In reply to Judy Schneider. I am also rrelated to Abraham Shorwell through John Shotwell who married (2nd wife) Mary Ogden in NJ. They had a daughter Mary who married Benjamin Shackleton. Their daughter Elizabeth married William Raub/Robe. Their daughter Harriet E. Raub married Peter /SnyderSchneider (born 1818, married 1843 Warren Co. NJ). My William and his brother, John Warder Shotwell were both residents of Richmond, Mo and are buried in the Shotwell family cemetery there. There could be a link to your William here, but I'm not sure where to look.

Elizabeth Groom

wm p shotwell

i am jerre shotwell sullivan and am also a descendent of willim presley shotwell and mary p. (mollie) fuller. i first came across this site and your posts last month. even though your posts were dated six years ago, i will send this out and hope it reaches you.

wm p and mary fuller were my great grandparents. it seems that our grandfathers were brothers. wm p and mary's last born, george bates shotwell, was my grandfather. he was born may 5, 1882 and died march 23, 1949 in new york. he is buried in kansas city, mo, where he had lived in the thirties and early forties.

i have a beautiful letter written by mary p. to her sister, laura, in may 1882. in it she wrote about family members, etc. she also mentioned each of her four sons, including your grandfather as "willie". i would be happy to send you a copy, either email or a copy in the regular mail.

i think i am about at the same place now that you seemed to be six years ago. i would appreciate your sending any info on to me - either on the shotwells' or the fullers'. i only have back to "wm and ann", who had a wm p at the approximate age in 1860 (KY) census. i also have wm p on the ''70, '80 with mary, and '00 census.

on the fullers, i have just mary's parents' names, wm green fuller and piety caroline (no maiden name) both b. TN, wm g's parents b. VA (from "family search")and census of '70 and '80 with wm g after piety died.

does the ambrose shotwell book have anything on our line? let me know if you would like to have the letter. will email or mail it to you. best of luck and thanks...

hi - even though your query was posted some time ago, just wanted to say that wm p. shotwell (in the 1900 bell county census) was my ggrandfather and evidently (probably) was the brother of allen. they were listed in 1860 at their appropriate ages with wm and ann shotwell in kentucky, fulton, hickman. on that census, allen was shown as born in tn. on others, it stated b. ky. don't know anything definite now on wm and ann except it seems he was born in va, she in tn.

wm p's third wife was meccie belle jennings b. june 1871. the GEORGE B (bates) age 18 was my grandfather. his mother was mary p. fuller, wm p's first wife, she died 1885. in addition to earnest, roy lee and luther, there were mary etta b. 1902 and jewel b. 1907 (1910 coryell county census) wm p and mary fuller's children were omer leasmer (lee) b. 1875, william clarence b. 1876, john r. b. 1878, and george bates b. 1882, all b. in tn.

i don't have anything about your family of allen shotwell, except the little bit about his brother's family and i am presuming they were brothers because of the similarity from the 1860 census - and you may already have this. best of luck. jerre shotwell sullivan

I am currently developing an ancestral record for the 19th century Shotwells descendants who settled in upstate New York. From the 50+ notes appearing on the message board I can garner the following possibilities with regard to the progenitor family Lord Johnathon Shotwell: (1) That he may have actually been illterate and thus not held the title of "Lord". (2) That the family name may have originally been pronounced either 'Shadwell' or 'Shadewell' (3) That he possibly departed from the port of Great Yarmouth, England sometime in the 1620's and fathered his only child (who he named Abraham) here in New Jersey about 1630 ... OR ... that he departed England in 1637, presumably with his wife (whose name is unknown) and his then seven year old son and only child named Abraham and possibly settled in New England (Ipswich, Massachusetts) or more likely in the New Jersey area.

Can you Karen, or anyone else shed some light on what the true scenario might be?

H. A. Shotwell found dead on tracks near Wybark, Oklahoma

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 30 July 1903, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

FOUND DEAD ON TRACK

Body of Conductor H. A. Shotwell Discovered on Katy Track

Muskogee: The body of H. A. Shotwell, a member of the Order of Railway Conductors, and a member of the American Federation of Labor at Wilburton, was found dead on the Missouri, Kansas & Texas tracks near Wybark, about five miles distance from this city.

Mel Bowman, Theo Stidham, Deputy Fleming and Bass Reeves took a hand car and went out to where the body was. They found it under guard of some section men. Close examination was made and the officers could find no evidence that would lead them to believe the man had been murdered. There was a cut and a bruise on the back of his head and two of his teeth were knocked out. These wounds evidently caused death and the officers were of the opinion that the man was killed by a train, as the body was on the right of way.

The officers refused to take charge. It will be taken in charge by the railroad company
