I found Johannes Shughart (Abt. 1760), a Prussian soldier who signed an oath of allegiance to the state of PA when I was researching my family name Shugars. Because names are often misspelled, I look for all variations, Shugar, Shugus. I descend from the Daniel Shugars line (abt 1805). The majority of my line orginates in Shippensburg, PA; MT Holly, MD; Westminster, MD; Hampstead, MD. The first names, and middle names too sometimes, are the same, similar or close. My father was a John Henry. We have William, Alice, Belle, LaRue, Samuel, James Lynch Shugars, Kathryn, John Fagan and so on.

Cindy

This is my firsttime toview this website. I am also a Shugart, born in Los Angeles in 1947 to Victor Markley Shugart and Rita Vera Fimbel. My father was born in Altoona, PA - his father was James Franklin Shugart. James was married to Mary. My dad had 2 brothers, James Jr. and Charles. My grandfather and his family moved to Yucaipa, California (San Bernardino County near Redlands) when the boys were quite young. They were fruit orchard farmers, as well as running a small gas station/fruit stand. My grandfather ("Daddy Jim") remained a farmer in Yucaipa until his death, while my grandmother, mary, taught piano lessons from their home. However, the 3 boys moved to Los Angeles after high school graduation (they all went to Redlands High). Eventually, all 3 of them were employed by Pacific Telephone Company where they remained at various positions until their respective retirements. I remember Daddy Jim telling us about relatives of his from PA, and I believe Alice was a name that he mentioned. Shugart

Below is my documentation.
Carol's Note: Statement from Ginger France in her preliminary comments about Elizabeth Meadville's diary. Elizabeth was the daughter of Peter Meadville. "Adie Bell McConnell was born June 22, 1857 in LeClaire, IA. He died on July 27, 1948 in LeClaire, Iowa. Adie Bell was also known as "Ed". He was a farmer and lived in Casey and LeClaire, Iowa. He was my Great-great- Grandfather. He married Rachael Ellis McCoy (who was known as "Ella") on Dec. 30, 1885 in Princeton, IA. They had four children, Wilbur A., Carrie Margaret, Herbert A., and Adabelle Ruth. Adie Bell and Rachael also raised Russell Hobart Saur (my grandfather) after his parents, Henry and Carrie (McConnell) Saur, died in the Spanish Influenza in 1918." For years I thought that Addie Bell Shugert was a girl. The name is listed in the census reports in 1870 as male and in 1860 as a female. When I read Ginger's notes, I had an "aha" moment. In reviewing Letty Shugert Genre's notes on the family, many of whom she was personally acquainted, I find she shows Susan and Addie as twins with Addie marrying a Della Fay in one set of notes and in another set of notes she shows an Edward who married a lady named Fay. Letty was well acquainted with the Shugerts. I then followed him through census reports and found his obituary. You will note that census recorders often have a hard time with names but it is obvious these are the right people.
SHUGART, A.B. In the 1850 census for Antis, Blair, Pennsylvania, there is a listing for Adie Kyle Bell, age 35, who is a Baptist Clergyman. Perhaps Caleb and Ruth named their son after him and perhaps Elizabeth McConnell did so also.

SOUTHERN SENTINAL Ripley, Mississippi May 26, 1927
A. B. Shugart
Blue Mountain, Miss. May 22, 1927
Blue Mountain yesterday lost one of its best and most popular citizens in the death at his home here of Mr. A. B. Shugart, who, for some weeks, had been suffering from serious complications. During his illness he received the hearty attention of the people of Blue Mountain, proving that at least this town is still ready and happy to lend a helping hand in the care of the sick with personal and loving ministry.

Born in Pennsylvania seventy-three years ago, married to Miss Della Fay of his native state, he migrated to Colorado in his manhood prime where he became interested in mining adventures. Meeting with Dr. T. T. Martin in Colorado Mr. And Mrs. Shugart moved to Blue Mountain where they have been residing for perhaps twenty years or more. They had one child who died in infancy. They have an adopted married daughter living in Missouri,- Mr. Shugart was a member of Lowery Memorial Baptist Church of which he was one of the most faithful members and deacons. He was keenly interested in all religious and civil activities. His death will prove a real loss to the religious life of Blue Mountain. Mr. Shugart was also a Mason of high order and served as an official of the Blue Mountain Lodge. Mrs. Shugart, too, is prominent in both religious and fraternal activities here, being one of the recognized leaders among Baptist women and in the local Eastern Star. The funeral of Mr. Shugart was conducted in Lowrey Memorial Baptist Church Sunday afternoon where many lovely floral tributes attested the popularity of this noble citizen.
Dr. W. B. Cooper, Pastor: paid a glowing tribute of appreciation in Mr. Shugart as did Dr. J. E. Buchanan, Mr. J. Mitch Nance, Rev. S. V. Gullett and perhaps others. A very impressive paper in his honor, written by Dr. E. B. Hatcher, his former pastor who could not attend the funeral was read by Prof. B. G. Lowrey.
The local Masons had charge of the funeral and interment, being the pall bearers and holding their solemn and beautiful services at the grave. Mr. Shugart was buried in Macedonia Cemetery in Blue Mountain. The passing of Mr. Shugart removes from Blue Mountain a citizen which life has been an inspiration to everybody who has known him here.

How are you connected with Addie Bell Shugert?

How did you find out Addie was a male? In the 1860 census Addie is listed as a female and in the 1870 census as a male. So how do you know which is right? It also looks like Addie has a twin, but not sure as to the name, as once listed as Susan, then listed as E V. I am not doubting you, just would like to know how you found out, so I can verify my information.

Sincerely,
Dianne

Do you have documentation of date of birth of Nathan Shugart. I have him b 1774-1784 to John and Hannah Shugart who lived in Surry County NC in the late 1700's. Trying to document that John was bro or half bro to Zachariah Shugart also living in Surry County in late 1700's. Zachariah was my GGGGgrandfather.

Do you know the father of Isaac Shugart and your Nathan Alexander Shugart? I am trying to connect them with the early John Shugart who had a son Nathan in NC. John's wife was Hannah. John died there in about 1800.
I would be interested in anything you have on Isaac and Nathan Alexander Shugart. I have been told about a Nathan married to a Sorilda and a Nathan married to Lucy Brewer. Could Sorilda and Lucy Brewer be one and the same person. You can see how confused I am.

Lou Ryan

From "Blanco County Texas Families for One Hundred Years" by John Stribling Moursand

"Levi, Senior was a brother of Thomas Hardin Shugart. Levi was born about 1816 in Kentucky. According to the U. S. Census of 1880, his parents were born in North Carolina. He came from Cumberland County, Kentucky, in a wagon train in 1854, with his wife, Elizabeth and four children. They settled in the Coal Creek-Camanche Creek vicinity of the northwestern part of present Blanco County. At the time of settlement this vicinity was in Gillespie County. The wagon train from Kentucky included the Shugart family, the Shelley family, the Hardin brothers, A. Davis, and James Riddle or Ridell who settled in the same vicinity. For a number of years, much of this vicinity in the northwestern part of what came to be Blanco County, in 1858, was included by error within the limits of Llano County. Levi Shugart appears for the first time on the GillespieCounty tax assessment roll in 1855.......

"The wife of Levi Shugart, Senior, was Elizabeth Mourfield who was born in Tennessee about 1824. The U. S. Census of 1880 shows that her parents were born in North Carolina. The children of Levi Shugart and Elizabeth (Betsy( Shugart nee Mourfield include the following:

"1. W. T. (Thomas) Shugart, born about 1840 in Kentucky, married Mary Martha Bird, daughter of Joseph Bird, Senior, and Eliza L. Bird nee Dorriss....
2. Joseph W. Shugart, born about 1842 in Kentucky, married first Sallie J .Price and second Mattie Davis......
3. David Milton (Dave) Shugart, born about 1853 in Tennessee, married Nannie Snow.
4. Florence M. Shugart, born about 1854 in Tennessee, married William W. Wedekind
5. Nancy Jane Shugart, born about 1856 in Texas, did not marry.
6. Anne (Tennessee) Shugart, born about 1858 in Texas, did not marry.
7. Jefferson D. (Jeff) Shugart, born about 1861 in Texas, did not marry.
8. Levi (Lee) Shugart, born about 1864 in Texas"

Note: Sarah Ann Shugart (abt.1848) is not on this list and birth date of Nancy Jane does not agree with other records.

1855-9 Nov The heirs of Jane Shugart were listed in a deed as being William H. I would love to add this to my Blanco County database (see WorldConnect ID nanaj). I have photos of Shugart graves in the Round Mountain Cemetery (Sara Price Shugart, John Shugart and his son Joe). I am not collecting photos of those not on my direct line, but I am willing to share what I have with anyone who wants it.

Illinois marriage records show Isaac Shugart married Elizabeth W. Dunbar 1850 Putnam Co., Elizabeth [DeVore] Ostrom 1861 Tazewell Co., and Sarah Crechbaune 1869 McLean Co. Also, Barbara Shugart b. about 1862, dau. of Isaac Shugart and Elizabeth DeVore, married H. E. Collingham 1881 Tazewell Co. I've found Isaac Shuggart/Sugart, carpenter, in census 1850 Putnam Co. age 24, and 1860 Tazewell Co. age 33 (with William E. age 8).

Does anyone know whether these are all the same Isaac? Or have more information on Isaac or his children? Thanks.
