I accessed the 1913 Shuman book through Ancestry online. The senior York County Adam Shuman's pension file can be found via Heritage Quest which is available through local libraries. I can access it online, but it may not be available online through smaller libraries, though.

I think I have sourced the York County Adam Shuman tree pretty well. Both the Sentz/Zentz families lived in the Baltimore MD area prior to moving to York County where the stayed for many years. After Adam died, some of the Shumans (son John) moved to Cambria County and the Sentzes (Jacob and wife Susanna Shuman Sentz - Adam's daughter moved to neighboring Indiana County, PA. I do need to find Susanna's grave marker and verify what it says regarding her father's service.

Both the book and pension file say Adam was a weaver. The pension file can be found by searching "Shoeman". I haven't seen anything that shows he was literate (in English anyway).

I recall seeing some trees with the Ashcraft line, but was not able to tie MD/York County Adam to them. I would be interested if you have any sources demonstrating his siblings or even (dare I hope) his parents!

Michele,

Sorry I haven't responded sooner, with your Aunt June moving in with us we have been devoting every moment trying to learn how to make her the most comfortable. I am June's daughter-in-law, Bill's wife. I met your mother at your grandmothers funeral. I am trying to get some stuff together for you. Our recent discovery was stuff that belong to your great grand parents Ola and Clifford. We even found tobacco that your great great grand father was using when he died. It was wrapped in a box with a note from your ggrandfather. Did you contact your Uncle Jerry about your grandmothers diaries? I have attached several pictures. Let me know if you have any problems opening them. Deni

I was excited when I found it! It ties Susanna with this sibling, and I can go back find more documentation!

The source is The George Shuman Family Genealogy and History From the Time of Arrival in America in 1760 to the year 1913 by Wm. C. Shuman, published in 1913.

There are some trees that have confused this Adam Shuman who settled in York Co. Pa with an Adam Shuman born in Turkey Hill. Obviously not the same man. I have the pension record and it states he was a weaver and his wife's name was Elizabeth. Let me know if you want more info, I have more sources that could use fresh eyes!

I found this tonight in the George Shuman History pg 309 under Other Shumans (forgive me if you already knew this):

A York County Family
"Adam Shuman, weaver. Diana, m. to Jones; Rachel, m. to Wagner.

Daniel, b 1841; soldier in Civil War; m. Dillie DeArmin, 1863, and had (1) Huldah, 1885; (2) Emma, 1887; (3) Albert, 1888; (4) Celesta, 1890; (5) Urania, 1892; (6) Warden, 1894; (7) Velma, 1897; (8) Orpha, '99, d., and (9) Hilda, 1902-1907. Urania, the sixth one of this list, is my informant. Her P.O. Box is Vinco, Cambria Co., Pa.".

My ggg grandmother Susanna Shuman Sentz was also the 1st Adam's dau. and was born in Maryland.

All I can say is...it's possible. My Fred Shuman is Danish, born Aug 1833, but that doesn't mean that the real Fred Shuman wasn't born Dec 1826. Don't know exactly what time period he sailed or who he sailed for. His real name was Rasmus Hansen but he used Fred Shuman's papers to get in the country and then kept the name. I don't even know how long he used Fred's name before he entered the country (I've seen his emigration date as 1856 and 1865)I just figured that the real Fred may have been German because Shuman sounds more German than Danish. Sorry I'm not much help.

Fredrick Shuman....did anyone lose him?

My gg grandfather was a Danish sailor in the 1850-60's and the family story is that he was given the papers of a deceased sailor named Frederick Shuman in order to work. (It was easier than drawing up papers of his own...some one dies and his papers are passed on to someone else)Is anyone looking for Fred who was a sailor from this time frame? Possibly from Germany.

Hey Deni!!
I am here and actually this is the first time I saw this message. I was speaking with my Mom tonight and she was wondering what the relationship is that you have with the family. There are so many of us it is hard to keep track sometimes!!
Please let me know of anything else you come across that might belong to my grandparents, I do not have many mementos and it would be wonderful to have some more.

Michele

Hi James, Selena and Michele,

June (Shuman) Cristy is now living with her son Bill. As we have been cleaning out the house we have come across many pictures. I have emailed some photos to James for the online photo area but if anyone has any interest please let me know. If Michele is corresponding with anyone, please let her know that half of the stuff is Grubb items. Alice (Shuman) Grubb lived with June.

I sent a lot of stuff to your Uncle Jerry (Jake) including Alice's diaries, report cards, love letters to Lawerence and many pictures. There was also a book on Grubb family history. I am still going through your Aunt June's house. Your grandmothers furniture from her house is in June's basement, I have yet to get to it to be able to tell its condition. I'm not sure if you know that your great grandparents also lived with your Aunt June so we have a lot to go through and have found a lot of momentos. There are things that your Aunt Joannie has asked me to look for and if you can think of anything you remember I would be happy to keep an eye out for it. You can contact me anytime my email is dalkir02@shepherd.edu and I would be happy to give you my phone number (Aunt Joan also has it). Aunt June had a massive stroke in December. Her speech is limited and she will never walk again, but she does loves to look at pictures and tell us who they are. Please let me know any questions and I can ask June. Deni

Several of these surnames are familiar to me in my search for Scott and Lemmon families of W. Virginia. I have crossed Youst and Shuman in my search for my husbands maternal family which has strains in Monangolia/Dodderidge/Tyler and other counties. Our family has an Orpha Lemmon married to Arza Scott and while I can place them together in 1920, I cannot go back further in time. Looking for any kind of help to identify Orpha's family and where Arza's family originated from. His father is Benjamin Scott also of WV.

Can you direct me to the sources that support these dates? I am still unable to confirm the Beaner, Lemons and Philips connections. The dates certainly coincide with info I currently have and I believe they are accurate however I do like to support everything with documentation before I include it on the family tree. Also would you or any other family researcher know where online to locate marriage info for WV, since I cannot locate marriage records for Orpha and Arza Scott. In fact I cannot locate Orpha Lemon in 1910 or 1900 at all. I can find Arza with father and stepmother in 1910...I assume shortly before he married Orpha.
