I found 5 death certificates, attached, for children of James and Sarah Perkins Shumate. It appears that all the children were born in VA and then the family moved to Lewis Co KY and then on to Manchester, Adams Co., OH

1880, they are two houses away from Balan and Annie Shumate and their family in Vanceburg, Lewis Co., KY

If anyone knows the connection between James P Shumate and his roots in VA, I would appreciate any information you can provide.

I host a My Family site, which I pay the dues of $29.95 a year and make it available to all Shumate researchers, regardless of the spelling. I or anyone can request "My Family" to send an invitation someone to join the site. They will send a username and password to be use to join the site. The username and password can then be changed to ones of personal choice.
We post our family trees, family pictures present and past, headstone pictures, WW I & WWII records, birth, marriage and death records, obituaries, to sum it up anything we think will be of interest to other members.
Let me know if you would like an invitation, even if it is just to take a look at what we are doing.
My best wishes to you in your endeavors whatever they are.
Hazel

Daniel and Marie Aucouturier De La Chaumette's son Jean (Baptist) De La Chaumette left France, went to England where he married his 2nd wife, Elizabeth H. Bougeois, daughter of John Bougeois and unknown wife. They relocated to Martinique, French West Indies. They had 4 sons, Antione and John were born in London, England. Samuel and Daniel were born in Martinique, French West Indies.

After Marie's death, Antione in charge of the plantation and brought John, Samuel and Daniel to the Virginia colony in search of his brother, Arnoul(Arnell De La Chaumette)Shewmake, only to find he had died almost 20 years.

In passing through Westmoreland Co., VA, he found Mark Hardouin, his brother-in-law, a Norman Emigrant, who owned and inn (or tavern) in Stafford Co., VA near Germantown trail crossed Elks Run. It was through Mark Hardin, in 1723, Jean bought some choice bottom land along Elk Run from the biggest landowner in the area, William Allen of Overwharton Parish in the County of Stafford. The deed is recorded in Stafford Co., VA, deed book. He bought 200 acres of land, which was an indication the John Shumate I, (as we will hereafter call him), was more than moderately wealthy.
It is believed John 1, died around 1728, just before ar after his son, John II married Judith Bailey. It has been said John I was killed by a blow in the head by a highwayman wielding the large door key of Marc Hardouin's tavern. When the tavern was demolished some years later, the workmen pulled up the treadle of one of the steps, there was Spanish money galore. No will for John I, has been found, which may indicate to us that he had not anticipated his death to be near. However, it is possible that he had made a will, the Stafford Co., Will Books for the years between 1709-1729 are missing. (Extract from The Shumate Family by Theodor-Friedrich von Stauffenberg)

I am descended from John I's youngest son, Daniel. Most of the members of the site I host on My Family descend from his son, John and wife Judith Bailey.

New De la Chaument/Shumate/De La Lashmutt/Lashmit etc. family members are always welcome.

Hi Bev..

Bear with me, I am new here.... I recently started researching our family. I found a descendant chart at my father's. Noticed my great great great great grandfather was Elias LashmET, born in 1763. It has 9 generations of our family listed, some empty spaces as well and last updated in 1994. After researching around I found a link with his father and grandfathers name. Theirs being Delashmutt. At the bottom of this link it said there was a marriage license found in Surry County of my 4greats grandfather Elias and his wife Mary. It had his name as LashmIT. So I am gathering that on my chart, the Mr. LashmET who put it together, may have been wrong? I have seen there are numerous spellings to our last name and have heard the reason why. Something that had happened many many years ago. I came across this post and I would really like to speak with you. Like I said, I am new here so I am not sure how this exactly works yet. I hope to hear from you soon.. Thanks much. Ms. Lashmit

How about some specific Shumate names and any years/dates that you might have, so when I get my FTM back up, I can search and see what I have. (I have a large database, if yours are de la Chaumette descendants.) You mentioned places, but unfortunately, FTM won't search by place (at least not my version - so names and dates (and spouses if you know them) would help to pinpoint them if they are there.

The de la Chaumette descendants definitely have some branches with Native American blood (but NOT all branches do).

Beverly

No photo but I believe the following funeral notice is of a Shumate/Graham relative. I think William was a brother to Samuel Graham who married Ellen Shumate. The article is from the Oregonian, 29 Nov 1921.

Funeral Notice
GRAHAM--At the residence 933 Ivanhoe street, Nov 28, 1921, William L. aged 65 years, beloved husband of Emma Graham, uncle of Mrs. E. F. Munch and W. L. Graham of this city. The deceased was a member of the Caulkers Union No. 218. Funeral services will be held at 2 P. M. Thursday, Dec. 1, 1921, at the Chapel of Chambers Co. 248-250 Killingsworth Avenue. Interment Rose City cemetery. Friends invited.

William L. Graham was a ship builder in Oregon and the son of Carter Graham and Eliza Green. I know the Mrs. Munch mentioned was a niece and her maiden name was Beatrice O'Keefe she lived with Emma and William when she was 15. I am trying to figure out if the W. L. Graham mentioned was Samuel Graham's son. There were two other sons George (1880 they did not know where he was) and Edwin L. Graham who stayed in Lee County, Iowa.

I am going to post the URL on the site so everyone will be able to see the picture. I know someone will surely claim it. Meanwhile, may I ask you to rescan the picture in the middle of your scanner and send it to me. Maybe that will lessen the light on the side and I can touch the picture up and post it on my site.
Thank you again.
Hazel

From a Genealogy.com forum posting back in 2001, the person who would know where it is located is Linda Shumate Curry but her email address is no longer valid. Does anyone know how to contact her? She said the cemetery was on her uncle's land.

The story that was told to me by my father-in-law (his grandson) was that he was born in Charleston, VA. He said his name was Meadows. He told his family that he killed a school teacher and took off for KY.
I have his D.O.B. as 14 April 1857.

Hello Philip,

My name is Kathryn Laughton, although my maiden name is Ash. I have searched many years for records of a Mathilda Ash of Kentucky. What a thrill to finally find the name, and to find that it is totally in connection to my own family line!

We are undoubtedly related.

Mathilda Ash, wife of Robert Ash, of Nelson County KY, daughter (I very much believe) of Nimrod Shumate, is my great great grandmother on my father's side.

Mathilda and Robert had quite a few children but one of them was George Washington Ash.
One George Washington's sons was George Powell Ash, born in Louisville, KY in 1893. and he died in Goondiwindi, Australia in 1965. He had run away to Australia after a domestic argument with his older sibling, Thomas Ash, arriving in 1906, aged 13.
He had twelve children, one of whom was my father, Marvin Ash.

I am thrilled to see you have information regarding Mathilda, and a clue as to her husband, Robert Ash.......Ashby? Interesting! I know Robert must have died reasonably young. I also know Mathilda was living in the house of her son (George Washington, my great grandfather) in the mid 1850s because of a census record.

It may help you to know that Mathilda and Nimrod are listed on some census (unsure which but I could try to find it) as "Shoemaker" and again elsewhere as "Schumacher".

Do you know anything of Robert Ash/Ashby and his parents? We are talking early 1800's by this time, and must be close to very early settlement of Kentucky. Do you know of his parents or origins?

And yes, I firmly believe Nimrod was her dad, and she did live with him to care for him in his old age.

I live in Australia, but I have a cousin, Melvia, (granddaughter of my grandfather, George Powell's sister) who lives in Chicago.

Love to hear from you,
Kathryn
On the back is written "John Shumate".

I have uploaded the photo here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~laneblood/...

and a really large one here (to see their faces better):
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~laneblood/...

I would like for this picture to go to a descendant of the people pictured, if possible. Let me know, please!

~Terri

Hi Hazel,
Thank you for posting that on the Shumate site - that's a good idea.
The light on the corner of the picture is actually that way on the original. I'm thinking either it happened when the picture was taken or it happened in the processing. I'm not sure which, but it's unfortunate.
Thanks much, Hazel!
Terri
