Need marriage record for Eva Shuster, dau/o Daniel Shuster of Tuscarawas Co., OH, to Michael Smith

I would like to find a marriage date for Eva Shuster, daughter of Daniel and Margaret Shuster of Tuscarawas Co., OH, to Michael Smith. I'm descended from Jacob Smith, son of Eva and Michael Smith. Jacob Smith was born 1815 OH - d.1874 Vigo Co., IN. Jacob Smith married Mary Jane Hoagland in 1847 in Owen Co., IN. Living near Jacob and Mary Jane Smith was Jacob's sister, Catherine Smith [Isreal] Sell. I see from reading the posts on the Shuster board that several books have been written about Daniel Shuster's family. Would someone who owns the books please do a look-up for me about the marriage of Eva and Michael Smith. I think they probably married in PA before coming to OH. Michael Smith is mentioned in Daniel Shuster's will. Thank you. I can be emailed at <MMer2000@aol.com> Kathryn Mereness

I am a descendent of Eva Shuster [daughter of Daniel & Margaret Shuster] and her husband Michael Smith. They had a son named Jacob Smith, b.1815 OH who died in Jan. 1874 at Terre Haute, Vigo Co., IN. Jacob Smith married Mary Jane Hoagland 21 Oct 1847 in Owen Co., IN. Also living nearby in Vandalia, Owen Co., IN were Isreal and Catherine Smith Sell. Catherine was a daughter of Michael and Eva Shuster Smith. Eva Shuster Smith lived with Isreal and Catherine Sell and probably died in Owen Co., IN. She was probably transported back to Ohio for burial near her husband. Could you tell me more about "The Green Book on Descendents of Daniel and Margaret Shuster". I'm looking for a marriage record for Michael Smith to Eva Shuster. I think they probably married in Washington Co., PA before coming to Ohio. I'm also hunting Bible records for Michael and Eva Shuster Smith's family. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can be emailed at MMer2000@aol.com. Thanks so much. Kathryn Mereness

I think that the David Shuster who married Mary Swank is the nephew of Abraham Shuster, not his brother. That is, the John who is the father of David is the son of John and Susanna Shuster. David, son of John and Susanna and brother of Abraham, was born in 1807, not 1828. In the 1880 federal census, John Shuster b. 1804 and his third (?) wife Susan b. 1833 are living next door to David (the right age to be David b. 1828), Mary, 6 of their children (Christena, Annie, Francis, Mary, Melvin, Andrew) and a granddaughter Hattie.

I descend from Sarah b about 1784, the sister of Abraham b 1785 and John b about 1775.

If you can't help with Mary, do you have anything on her other siblings? Will be glad to compare notes on what I have on the Shuster ancestors.

Beth,

Thank you for the reply on the Johannes Schuster. You will also see on the Ship The Anderson with Captain Campbell as the helm, are listed a pasenger by the name of Johannes Henrich Schuster. I will ry to locate the article in the Warrren County, NJ History material I saw back a number of months ago that lead me to think the Schuster/Shuster pond was called by such name from 1752 or so. I will have to refresh my memory on that. I have been to the pond and to Stillwater a number of times and saw the head stones as well as the spring fed pond/lake. The present land owner showed us (my brother and myself) an old house as well as a dug out area in the bank with rocks stacked as such to fom a formation for small cabin. Thus thinking perhaops this was the foundation of the Settlers log cabin. Obviously this does not verify the time date fo there arrivial. I will try to find this article.

I come down from Gerhard Shuster (son of Johannes Heinrich Schuster)then his son John who went to Westmoreland Pa. and eventually to Ohio and then this Johns son Abraham who travel to Iowa in the early 1840's. Isaac's had a son Jonn, and the following son of this John is/was my father William Allen Shuster.

Will talk later.
Leslie

Leslie Shuster From Ohio
P.S. So from what area do you come from.

Dear Surbeck4,
A couple of thigs I will comment on regarding the informtion you have about Johann Heinrich Schuster. The headstone has inscribed on it, "Here lies with God Johannes Heinrich Schuster born in 1720 in Birschdorf
Europa. He was married to Maria Gertraut Glockerin in 1740. They lived in state of marriage 45 years." First is the fact that we had felt Johann arrived in 1750 on the ship 'The Anderson' with Capt. Campbell at the Helm. A Johann Schuster is listed on the manifest of the ship, "The Anderson" as coming into this 'New land' the Americas in 1750. In this we find his name/that name being listed as a passenger on this ship. I felt this way also as it seemed shortly after 1750 an area just south of Stillwater, New Jersey where they had settled, has on the later maps, but old plat land maps a pond/lake called the Schuster Pond. Some of the wording in these old history records of these counties lended itself to this/these conclusion. This being primarily Warren County New Jersey, in and in around the Blairstown area. We also feel that Garhardt and his other siblings, children of Johann were likely born in Europe as he and Maria Glockerin had married in 1740, thus the likelihood of children shortly thereafter.
Now as to where Birschdorf is located I/we have not pinned this down. Many have in corresponding with me/us say likely this was a mispelling and perhaps it is. However we also find the exact spelling Birschdorf pops with other people in other locations.

A case in point is, #1. in Alsace, France. I have seen the name Birschdorf on the Jean Frances Lorenz genealogy family tree site. I have tried to correspond with him/her and have not been able to find out as to where he/she thinks this city/village may be. The one in charge now just does not know. But in this case it is connected with Bischholtz as the genealogy reads, "Sommer, Joseph (1744) (1744 Neuviller La Roche, Sommerhoff, 67, Bas Rhin-30 mai 1801 Birschdorf,ou Bischholtz" How this all brakes down and/or fits together I do not know.

#2. Is if you feed into googles the name of the families
KNECHTEL - KNECHTL - KNEGTEL you will find a Maria Theresia Babst b.1785 - as marring a Franz KNECHTEL (Unknown EUROPEAN KNECHTEL 1 , Unknown EUROPEAN KNECHTEL , , ) was born on 20 Jan 1779 in Kanth. Franz was employed as glazenier. He joined religion Evangelisch.
Franz married Maria Theresia BABST. Maria was born on 3 Mar 1785 in Birschdorf. They had the following children: 2585 M i Gustav KNECHTEL was born on 25 Jan 1820 and died on 3 Jun 1860.

#3point is:In the book, 'Neues preussisches Adels-lexicon' has listed Bredow za Birschdorf.

Also a fourth sighting was with some land holders north of Germany I believe, but i can not get it to come up on Googles at this time. I coprresponded with a lady genealogist and she felt this was some peoples name. It was something like Von Birschdorf. This all has really been a mystery and I/we can accept perhaops it is/was a mispelling had the other locations not came up with that spelling. So I hope this all makes sense and that it does not appeal as if i am a know-it-all. Far be it from that I hope and we will applaud anyone that can locate this elusive name/place/location, if in fact it really existed. Thank you for yor patients in wading through this. Sincerely, Leslie Shuster, Ohio--7 generations down from Johann Schuster
Just passing along some information I came across while searching for a Childs Bible in a very well known auction site:

Someone has "The Childs Bible" listed, that Bible belonged to a Kate M. Shuster born in 1862, it given to her by her grandmother Margaret Shuster. I'm not related to anyone with the Shuster last name nor am I connected to the person who has the Bible...just passing the info as I feel someone here might want to know about it.

***For whatever reason the person who listed the Bible misspelled the Shuster last name and wrote Schuster in the auction description....

I uploaded the picture of what appears to be a list of births and deaths in that particular family in case someone wants to see it. I hope that by posting it here someone can make a family connection... :)

http://www.jetnet.org/rick/Shuster.jpg

From what I can read, here are some names found in the list of births found in the Bible: ***Whether or not those listed are related, not sure.***

-Kate M.
Re: Looking for Michael MYERS (1745-1852)

I believe this is one in the same person

Recollections of Capt. Michael Myers, Newburgh, Ohio,
given to Dr. Draper February 25 and 26, 1850.

In the Spring of 1774, Mr. Myers was residing on Pigeon Creek, in now Washington Co. Pa. & was called out to guard the frontier, with others, to the Greathouse Settlement at Baker's Bottom.

Two men came there, who wished to cross the Ohio to Yellow Creek, & desired a pilot, & engaged Mr. Myers to go over with them. They swam over their horse beside the canoe, & went two or 3 miles up on the western side or bank of Yellow Creek. Their object was to examine land. It was near night, & concluded to stop, spanseled out the horse, & prepared to camp. The horse feeding, rambled over a rise of ground about 300 yards distant; & soon after, hearing the bell on the horse rattling rather violently, Myers and the men picked up their guns & went to see what it meant: and when within 40 yards, Myers discovered an Indian in the act of unspanselling the horse, who was rather restive (running round towards the camp of his white masters) not seeming to like his new visitor. The Indian's gun was lying on the ground near by. Myers drew up & shot the Indian who fell over, as if dead. It was now near sun-down. Presently in a few minutes Myers discovered another Indian approach with a gun in his hand, who had been attracted thither by the report of Myers' shot; & when about 30 yards from Myers, looking down the hill at the dead fallen or wounded Indian, as if in astonishment, Myers having reloaded immediately after his former shot, now fired, & this second Indian also fell, whether dead or not, Myers did not wait to see. The Indian camp was only about a hundred yards off, with a large number of deer & bear skins presented to view. By this time the two white men had got their horse & ran off; & when Myers reached the river, the men were partly over in the boat with their horse swimming beside, & would not consent to return. Myers hurried up the river to a spot where he could ford it, & thus got over.

Next morning an Indian came to inquire who shot the two Indians the day before; and some of the party stationed there (about 30, Mr. Myers thinks) killed this Indian. Myers, however, did not participate in this murder. The same day, or the next, as Myers thinks, a large "dug-out" came over a few rods below the mouth of Yellow Creek. Greathouse's party, and Myers with the rest, some 30 or 40, were posted along the Southern bank of the river behind trees & bushes, & logs, & as the Indian canoe came within 5 or 6 rods (Myers says he thinks nearer) of shore, they fired upon the Indians as directed by their Captain (Greathouse). the Indians had guns with them, [he] thinks all of them were shot (& erroneously supposes there were some 30 of them.)

The remainder of this Indian party, who did not attempt to come over, went down the river to Wheeling & there got attacked.

Sappington lived a little below Greathouse's; Geo. Cox was a large man and well known to Myers.

Mr. Myers was not out with McDonald, Dunmore nor Lewis in 1774.

Mary Magdaline Shuster, Daniel's sister married John Moninger. Their son George married Daniel's daughter Elizabeth before 1806. George and Elizabeth died in Tuscarawas (now Carroll, I think, (about 1823/1830)) Co. I put them there around 1811. I would love some help locating their graves - Tressel family cemetary?? Their farm? Haven't been able to locate. Really interested in their chlidren, if anyone else is researching I have some church records linking the Moningers and the Shusters. Anyway Moninger booklet is on line. In Red Book, Moninger is listed as Morninger, also spelled with Monninger in Ohio stuff.

This line of Shusters went from Westmoreland, to Clarion County to Armstrong County winding up in Kittanning.
Leslie,

Thank you for all the information. I will enjoy putting pieces together with my notes. I am 8th generation down from Johannes Heinrich Shuster.

About the year that Johannes immigrated..... I found documentation in a source available on ancestry.com. The book title is A Collection of upwards of Thirty Thousand Names of German, Swiss, Dutch, French and other Immigrants to Pennsylvania from 1727 to 1776. On page 347, Johannes Heinrich is listed as being a passenger on a ship that arrived on November 7, 1754. The ship's name was John and Elizabeth with Captain Ham from Amsterdam. The ship's information is listed on page 346. If you have another source for Johannes' immigration year, please share it with me.

thank you,
Beth

Re: Birschdorf Europa

I forgot to add that I found what looks like Birschdorf in the Meyers Gazetter of the German Empire online at the ancestry.com website. However, it is in German and typed in a font that makes it difficult to discern the letters. Also, we know that certain letters were used in substitute for others at times. For example, in colonial writing "f" was used for "s". As best I can tell the actual text looks like Bifchdorf. Any ideas out there?

Has anyone determined where Birschdorf is in Europe. This is where Johannes Heinrich Shuster came from in 1754.

There's a third house built by the family? I don't think I was aware of this. I will check my notes and see if I can recall anything.

Hi Susanna I used to visit your Aunt Elizabeth when whe lived on Hort St. In Westfield, NJ. After Phillip, Elenor and Guendelyn left she was all alone. I used to go to her house on Hort street with my sister Caroline. I would cut the lawn and bushes and Caroline would clean the house. I remember that we each got $1.00 and lunch. She always gave us pound cake with pudding over it for desert. We took the 54 bus from Rahway to Westfield. I really thought your grandmother was smart, and nice. I know she was a retired school teacher. I remember your father when he was in the Army. He'd come and visit in his uniform. I knew that he retired as a Warrent Officer W3 That's a pretty high rank. I retired from the USAirForce as a Master Sergeant. Drop me a line some time. cousin Henry

Re: Edmund Shuster born Oct. 1886 Foxburg, Pa Clarion county

My name is Edmund Shuster. My grandmother was Anna Benton Shuster. She had two sons- Paul Benton Shuster, and Edmund Austin Shuster. The later was my father and he pased away in Dec 1980. Paul Shuster was married to Lucille Rau Shuster, and Edmund was married to Allyn Daisy Stinger Shuster. Paul Shuster had 7 children, and Edmund Shuster had 3 children. The Edmud Shuster born 1886 in Foxburg was my grandfather, who I never knew, as he was killed being run over by a train. I don't know the details, or the year, but it was when my dad(Edmund) was a young boy. If you have any other questions, my email is streetrod@alltel.net
