the Sibbetts in the uk

Hi,
I have William Sibbet maybe born Dublin Ireland 1874
He was a Boatyard Labourer. Some family say born Scotland and spell the name Sibit. I remember reading on a record something he had written beside some of the births of the later children- claiming they were not his kids.
He married 4 Nov 1898 in Trinity Church Paisley Renfrew Scotland (and later divorced) Elizabeth Geddes born 17 Dec 1879, 6 East Campbell St, Blackfriars District, Glasgow, Scotland, died 29 Jan 1960, 5 Wall St, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland. (Elizabeth was a Threadmill worker, there may have been two more children, some family say)
Her first child Born in the Poorhouse
Illegitimate, James Sibbet, 24 Jan 1898.
My grandmother was next Rosetta Black Sibbet born 28 May 1899,49 1/2 High St. paisley, Renfrew, Scotland. Christening 26 June 1899, Glasgow Scotland, died 4 Nov 1942 (6 years before I was born I never knew her) Grey Nuns Hospital Regina Saskatchewan Canada. Burial 7 Nov 1942, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Next child is William Sibbet born 1 July 1900, 11 Cotton St, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland.
Next is Elzabeth Martin Sibbet born 9 May 1901 same place. Then it is Agnes Sibbet born 4 Oct 1904 same place.
Then I have Maggie Crawford Sibbet born 17 Feb 1906 same place, died 21 July 1987.
Then I have 5 children with last name Scott. She didn't marry James Scott until 26 Oct 1914 so I have wondered who's who's.
I have Peter Sibbet born 27 Mar 1907, 12 New Sneddon, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland and a note that says He changed his name to Scott 22/8/1966.
Next is Alexander (Geddes Sibbet) Scott born 11 Oct 1908, 84 Cnetre St Gosbals, Lanark District, Glasgow Scotland.
Next I have Christina Brown Scott born 1910, Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, died 1986 Paisley Renfrewshire Scotland.
Not sure here I have Douglas born about 1910 at 161 Tannchill Terrace, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland.
My last one is Janet Muir Scott born 18 Nov 1912, 436 S Wellington St. Hutchesontown Lanark Glasgow Scotland.
Not sure if all my info is correct but some I do know for sure as I have the certificates etc.
Hope this is of some help.
I believe that Elizabeth Geddes was my Grandmother, She had a son Peter to William Sibbet, and later James Scott adopted him. We only knew my father was a Sibbet not long before he died. He though his mother and william had never married he didn't say anything about having any other family to sibbett. but he did go onto have 12 or 13 brothers and sisters. I think there may have been sisters Lizzie and Chrise who were older than him who may also have been sibbets children.
Sorry I can't help anymore as I have just started my own search and seem to have got as far as great grandparents
Anne Smith (Formally Scott) Born Scotland reside in England

Re: Sibbets in Montana

William Sibbitts was from Somerset County, PA, as I recall, and was of German background - his father was also William Sibbitts. The original name was "Sibetz" I believe and was Anglized. They are a Pennsylvania Dutch family (German). "Sibbits" and "Sibbitts" are almost always German, but there are some who were from formerly German areas of Poland, Hungary, and other Slavic areas as well.

William Sibbitts served in the Indian Wars in the US Army after the Civil War, and was stationed briefly in Arizona before moving to Wolfpoint, Montana - he was quite prominent. There is a biography on him, as I recall, I shall try to look for it. I think he married a Native American, or his son married a Native American.

The name "Sibbitts" is German, the name "Sibbitt" is Scots or Scot-Irish, and to some extent English as well. The two families are completely different, however, there are both Sibbitts and Sibbit (or Sibbitt) in Montana now.

Wilmer Sibbitt

Sibbets in Montana

My maternal grandmother was Minnie Sibbits (different spellings on different documents). Her father was William Sibbitts who had a twin brother named John. They were born in the 1850s and served in the Union army as teens before going West. We know his folks were from PA area. His mother was Mary, Mary Anne ? and she remarried and had a third son who was raised after her death by her sister. I thought growing up that the Sibbetts was Welsh. My aunt recently said English.

Any information is appreciated.

thank you for this information. I have been racking my brain, trying to figure out where William came from. Now I have a better idea where to look. My brother said he had found a link to the Pennsylvania Sibbetts through the BAREFOOT line, but before he could give me the info, his computer crashed! He hasn't been able to find it again. I will pass your info on to some of the NC Sibbetts that are doing Geneology. Hopefully someone will be able to help. I haven't had a whole lot of time to work on mine lately. But when I do get some time I would love to compare notes. I have quite a bit on the NC side.

Re: NC Sibbetts (Columbus Co)

I have some evidence that the Columbus County Sibbett family is descended from William Sibbit of Hunterdon County, NJ. A land swindle in 1740 to 1770 forced many people in Hunterdon County, NJ to immigrate to North Carolina - the Jersey Colony of North Carolina. That is exactly where my Sibbitt family is from - Hunterdon County, NJ - and they stayed there until 1796 - I think William left about 1760 or so.
Thus the "Sibbett" family of NorthCarolina may be the same as the "Sibbitt" and "Sibbit" family of New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and the rest of the USA.

Any information of the Revolutionary War Soldier William Sibbett of Bladen Co, NC would be much appreciated. He is ancestor of the NC Sibbitts and I believe that he was from New Jersey, and was the same as my family from New Jersey.

SAMUEL L. SIBBETT & NELLIE B. HILL, PERRRY CO.ILL. 1874

I'm a Hill researcher on a wild goose chase and wonder if one of you can enlighten me: Samuel L. (Lowry?) Sibbett married Nellie (Eleanor) B. Hill in Perry County, IL. in 1874. Nellie was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Daniel Hill of Lawrenceburg, Dearborn, In., born ca. 1848. Nellie had a sister, Leah Parks, who lived in Illinois according to their father's 1893 obit, and I assume Nellie's being in Illinois had something to do with her sister. Rest of the family never left Dearborn County. Can anyone tell me about Samuel L. in Perry County and how Nellie came to be there?

Sam and Nellie's sons, Hugh and Guy, returned to Lawrenceburg in 1900 to live with their aunts, Belle Hill Roberts and Vashti Hill. There is a Samuel L. still living in Ilinois who may be their father. No indication of what happened to Nellie.

I have lots of information will be glad to share...

Well, a bit more information.

His full name was Jacob N. (or A) Sibbett (probably really Sibbitt) (born about 1813, in Bucks Co, PA), and his wife was Julia Ann Bowers (b in NJ), and they married 23 Jan 1860 First-Second-Third-Fourth-Fifth-Sixth-Seventh Wardt, Trenton, Mercer, New Jersey. He was 42 years old when he married, thus, this was almost certainly his second marriage.

His father was John Sibbitt and his mother Mary Sibbitt (married name). We believe that John Sibbitt was the youngest brother of Solomon Sibbit and Aaron Sibbit, all were the sons of John Sibet of Bucks County and later Hunterdon Co, NJ. The Sibbitt brothers were James, Aaron, Solomon, John, Johnathan, Benjamin, and Thomas. Solomon Sibbit was my ggggg grandfather.

Jacob's brothers were Richard Sibbitt, Benjamin Sibbitt, David Sibbitt, and his sister was Henrietta Sibbitt.

Jacob's children were Charles Sibbitt, Emaline Sibbitt, and John Sibbitt, and there may have been a few more, maybe an Henrietta Sibbitt

John Sibbitt, the younger brother of Charles, served in the Civil War with the 104 PA Infranty from Bucks county, then moved to Missouri, and married Mary Ann Hayes. They lived very close to the family of William Sibbit, who was one of Solomon Sibbit's children. John Sibbitt had one child Louis Sibbitt. John Sibbitt died in about 1877, and his widow moved Boulder Colorado. There she lived close to my great uncle James W. Sibbit.

Her son Louis Sibbitt died in a mine accident in about 1900, and is buried next to some of my cousins, the little twins of James W. Sibbit in Columbia Cemetery, Boulder, CO.

You know more about Charles Sibbitt than I do. I do not know why they moved from PA and NJ to Wisconsin - maybe for the land.

I should have some more for you in the near future.

Wilmer Sibbitt

Alice:

It turns out that Jacob Sibbett (or Sibbitt) is part of the Bucks County, PA- Hunterdon Co, NJ Sibbitt family - that is the same Sibbitt family as mine.

I am working out how all of these early Sibbitts are related, but I believe that Jacob Sibbett (Sibbitt) is the grandson of John Sibet of Bucks Co, PA and Hunterdon Co, NJ, who is my gggggg grandfather.

Wilmer Sibbitt

I think you're looking at Richard Marlen Sibbitt, b. 14Feb1793 in Hopewill Twp, Essex Co, NJ and d. 25Nov1877 in Carrol Co, IN. First wife Alette Stryker (several spellings), she d. 1862. 2nd wife Sarah Tomlinson, m. 14Jul1864 in Warren Co, OH. They had 4 children (all b. Carrol Co, IN). Marlen Richard (1865-1897); Albert Clifton (19Sep1869->1892); Flora A. (1867-1869); Harry Leon (1871-1872).
Richard was 71 when he married Tomlinson, who was in her twenties. He fathered poor Harry at the age of 78!!

This is not my line, I may have more about Richard, believe he saw service in the War of 1812. Let me know.

Here's what I have. Thaddeus Warsaw Sibbitt (son of William Sibbett, son of Aaron Sibbet) was b abt 1827 in Warren Co, OH, and d. aft 1878 in Tower Hill, Shelby Co, IN. He m. Elizabeth Caroline Potter on 25Jan1854 in OH, she d. bef 1873. Then he m. Mary E. Bancutter on 24Aug1873, in Tower Hill. He had six children by Elizabeth, and two by Mary. The Elizabeth children are: John (1853->1880); Albert L. (1854-<1870); Charles J. (1856-<1870); Edgar Marcus (1858-<1870); Martha Elizna (Jan 1861->1880); Neta (26Jan1864-<1870). The Mary children: Dora Maude (4Sep75->1895, m. George R. Ashe); Charles (9May78-?).

This is not really my line, so I don't have much more. Except that Thaddeus is pretty much the "father" of the numerous Indiana Sibbits today. You should know that there two large Sibbitt clans in IN, centered sort of in Carrol Co, and in Shelby Co. Most of the Carrol Co, migrated to IL.

Good luck
Dan Sibbet
Virginia

Here's all I have on Alvah. He was the son of Eli Sibbitt (b. 1794, NJ-d.1839, Carroll Co, IN) and Sarah Ann Scofield (b. 1797). Alvah was one of ten children, he was born July 2, 1828 in Warren Co, OH, and died March 20, 1899 in Carroll Co, IN. He married Jane Jennings -- as you state -- in 1849. She died "after 1860" (as they say, I don't know when). On June 14, 1888, he married his second wife, Lydia Gaumer. Alvah and Jane had three children: George Allen Sibbitt (4/13/51-10/29/93 Carrol Co); William B. Sibbitt (1/19/1855 - 9/21/1946, Indiana); and Lydia M. Sibbitt (1857-unk). Daughter Lydia married William R. Unger on Aug 28, 1878 in Carroll Co. The fact that Alvah's only daughter and his second wife had the same given name seems too tantalizing to be true....? At the age of 60 Alvah married his 2nd wife, and they had a child 2 years later (what a guy!!!), Ervan Sibbitt, b. May 1890 but died that November. That's about all I have on Alvah. Except that his father died when Alvah was only 11 and his mother remarried to a man even ten years older than her previous husband. He was named Benjamin Greathouse, and Alvah and his younger siblings were all raised in the Greathouse home...all in Carrol County, Indiana.
Hope this helps. I don't know anything about the Jennings family.
Good hunting,
Dan Sibbet

Not sure if this thread is still live, just spotted it, or if the spelling of the name is significant. Ours has only one 't', although most people assume it has two, and I can see how over the years the branches of the familly have moved to 'sibbett'. We know the origin of the surname (Saxon) and the rough migration of the family following the Norman conquest, and our own branch of the family ended up in the Scottish borders before settling on Newcastle and Edinburgh. I'm from the Newcastle side, some colourful local history associated with the family, especially mid-60s, but have traced back only as far as the 1901 census. Any help?

ALAN

Fantastic! I had hit a dead end on these. I'm actually researching Sarah Tomlinson's ancestry but I have a photo of the Sibbetts circa 1870. I'd greatly like to find descendants of Sarah's to see if a) they'd like a copy of the photo b) they have any traditions of Sarah's ancestry. ( I do have a lot of share on her mother's side.)
Where did you find your information? It filled in some blanks for me, I couldn't find anyone after 1870.

Thanks!
docevans
Dixie State College of Utah
