Mary E Siders / Robert Watts in SE Ohio, 1850

I am searching for information regarding Mary Elizabeth Siders, born about 1830. She married Robert Brownfield Watts in about 1850. This family had 8 children: William S (b. 1851), Mary F (B. 1854), James B (b. 1856) John E (b. 1859), Elizabeth B (b. 1864), Ella May (b.1868), Samantha (b. 1874), and Alexander (b. 1877). The family is known to have been in the Ross / Pike county OH area in the 1850's.

There is a page in a Watts family bible that list the following members of the Siders family:

Harriet Siders (b. 5/6/1818)
Susannah Siders (b. 4/1/1821)
Aaron Siders (b. 10/10/1822, d. 11/10/1822)
Margaret Siders (b. 1/26/1824)
John Siders (b. 9/20/1825, d. 9/28/1831)

I suspect that these are siblings of Mary Elizabeth. I hope this helps someone to identify this family. I am eager to hear from anyone who can tell me more about them or provide leads.

I have found some Siders Ohio. Growing up on the coast, this was not a common name at all and just to see a bunch of them in the Ohio area was a shock!! Exciting still. I am trying to look into the different spellings as well. My search is not over! Thanks!

There are two Siders family lines in Ohio. My line came directly from PA. One line came through KY. I have heard of a Siders line with Native American heritage but not of my line. There has been some info on-line of this family.
But there are, according to Victor Siders, who had done much Siders research several different Siders families. One family went to Canada too. My line was apparently not originally Siders but a variation spelling.
Carolyn Siders

Hey!
I do not know where Walterboro, SC is. My dad grew up in Charleston. I should see if my family knows of the area. I have not ever heard of "Scheide", but it is worth a shot! I was so sure that "Siders" possibly was a shorter version of another name or spelled "Syders" or something with the same sound (or is it called a "phoneme"?)
At anyrate, it would be interesting to find out if we have a connection!

Hi,
I am also an African-American Siders with roots in SC. My father's family comes from Walterboro, SC. I'm just getting started researching the Siders side of my family. According to my father "Siders" is not the correct spelling of the last name...he said its really something like "Scheide" and somewhere along the way it was changed to "Siders".

SIDERS - South Carolina

I saw a thread in here regarding Siders in SC but it had been written so long ago. If you are still out there I would love to make contact. I too am looking for Siders in that area.

I can see that there are alot of Siders in the Ohio area and beyond and for some reason, I have a feeling there is a link between SC and the others. USA's history does include slavery and thus name changes. I have no doubt that the Siders of African descent in SC are related to the Siders of European descent in Ohio. I have been told that there is a Native American link possibly.

I was hoping that some one might have some info on families who owned plantations or farms where they might of had slaves/servants or involved with trade. Also, those who might have been involved with the underground railroad. Of course any Native American References as well.

Thanks!
I believe your George Washington Siders is the son of Jacob Siders (1814-1868) and Elizabeth Ann Spahr (b. 1832-1833) of Perry Co., PA. Jacob is probably the son of John Zeiders (1789-1838) and Christine Selker (1796-1881) of Perry Co. John is the son of John (Johannes) Zeitter (1762-1806) and Magdelena Stauffer (b. abt. 1765) of Dauphine Co., PA. John is the son of the immigrant Johann Jacob Zeitter, Sr. (1728-1795) of Schopfloch, Wurtemberg, and wife Barbara (1730-1808). I can supply full details by paper copy or electronic file.

John Siders was actually from Medina County, Ohio. Horns from Green Twp., Ashland Co. John and Minnie Etta (Etta on marriage license) were married 21 Nov 1887 in Haysville, Ashland Co. He is listed as 21 and she as 16. I'm not sure she was yet 16 but license says 16. What I have further on Siders I received from you several years ago. Further info on Horn and John and Minnie's family is on line under "Some Ohio Families" by D. Paine Joyce. You should be able to contact me at above E Mail.
Carolyn Siders

I think you must be wrong about the 1910 date of marriage of John Siders and Minnie Horn. In the 1900 census, Garfield Twp., Newaygo Co., MI, there is a John Siders b. May 1865 in PA married to Minnie E. born October 1872 in OH. She is said to have been married 13 years and to have had 7 children, 6 living and listed: Clarence W. b. Oct. 1888 in OH, Grace b. May 1891 in OH, Orlie b. May 1891 in OH, Phoebe b. Dec. 1892 in MI, Daisy b. Aug. 1895 in MI, and Howard A. b. May 1899 in MI. In the household there is a Betsy Horn b. Feb. 1812 in PA, the step grandmother of John (i.e., grandmother of Minnie).

I have a John Siders born 1864-1865 in Heidelberg Twp., Lebanon Co., PA, who might be your John Siders. He is the son of David Seiders b. Sep. 1837 in PA and Kate b. March 1840 in PA. John is 5 in the 1870 census and 15 in the 1880 census, but I am not completely sure that he is not the same as a John Seiders in the 1900 census of Lebanon, PA, born May 1867, married to Susan and with a sister Katie. If the census dates are accurate, he is not the same, but census dates are not always correct.

I have the ancestry of David back to the immigrant and can send it as a GEDCOM or paper copy.

My deceased husband had an uncle by the name of Issac Siders who lived at Lake Michigan many years ago. I'm sure that he is deceased by now. This Issac had a brother by the name of Gerald Lynden Siders and a sister by the name of Eva Siders from Toledo. Eva never married. Issac had about five children.

David,
Thank you so much for your web site recommendations. They have been a tremendous help in sorting out who is who. Re: the clipping that you are interested in obtaining, we scanned it and it did not come out very readable, so we will try it on a copier and see if that does better. If so, I will send it to you by snail mail. Thanks again for all of your assistance

Sorry, David, I had it wrong and Carolyn Siders set me straight. John Siders, the father of Daisy, is really the son of Jacob Siders 1814 and Elizabeth Ann Spahr of Perry Co., PA. He descends from the immigrant Johann Jacob Zeitter abt. 1728 of Dauphin Co., PA. The John Seiders that I incorrectly assigned to Daisy was the son of David Seiders 1837 of Lebonon Co., PA. He descends from the immigrant Jacob Seider 1709 of Reading. Email me if you want more on either of these lines.
