His father's name was Melvin Sifford and mother was Athaleen Sifford. Melvin's dad was named William "Willie" Sifford, though i'm not sure where he was raised yet.

Oliver and Mary Campbell Sifford family of MO

According to information found in the Oregon County, MO, History Book, the entry about John Wesley and Ellen T. Davis Sifford tells that the family of Oliver and Mary Campbell Sifford started in Missouri. The 1860 Census shows Oliver, Mary, and Andrew J. Sifford in Stoddard Co., MO. Later the family moved to Mayfield, KY, returning to Stoddard Co., MO after the death of Oliver Sifford, and later moving to Oregon Co., MO. All of the children Andrew Jackson, John Wesley, Alfred, Isaac, William, Robert J., Fanny, Louisa, and Allis were born in MO accrding to the 1880 Census, but that does not necessarily match the family story.

The information says that John Wesley Sifford, one of nine chilren, was born in Stoddard Co., MO in 1861, the son of Oliver and Mary Campbell Sifford. As a child he moved with his parents to Mayfield, KY. After the death of his father, the family moved back to MO where the children grew up. John Wesley Sifford died on August 12, 1931 at Alton, MO.

[If all of the children were born in MO, that puts the family moving to KY sometime in 1878 and returning to MO the same year or in 1879. Mary and children appear in the June 1880 Census of Stoddard, Co., MO. Isaac is listed as 12 years of age and Allis, the youngest is 2.]

The entry for Isaac and Nannie (Nancy Bolton) Sifford says this. At the age of 10 years, Isaac Sifford traveled by covered wagon from Mayfield, KY, with his widowed mother, her brother (his uncle), and nine brothers and sisters. They first settled in Southeast, MO, for a short time, then traveled on to Oregon Co., MO, where they stopped for a year or two at Garfield, MO, then called Sittonville.

When they moved from there, they, at last, found home at Alton, MO. Isaac and his family settled in a pine grove north of Alton, where you will now find the Hickory Grove Church of Christ.

I have Mary and her children listed in Woodside Twp. of Oregon Co., MO in June,1880. Based on the age of the youngest daughter Allis as 2, I put Oliver's death between late 1878 through early 1880. I have Mary's filing for Benefits for Civil War Soldiers as Feb. 11, 1890. Chilren: Andrew Jackson, John Wesley, Alfred, Issac, William, Robert J., Fanny, Louisa, and Allis.

My Great Uncle Albert Sifford (1892-1945) was married to Alta May Jackson (1896-1959) my grandfather's sister. Albert's parents were Issac Sifford (1869-1948) and Nannie Bolton (1872-?).

The 1880 Census lists the children of Oliver and Mary Sifford as being born in MO. According to family information, the family traveled back and forth from MO and KY. I will provide this information in another listing.

I don't have much more on the Campbell family. I didn't know what Mary's mother name was. I have a letter from one of Oliver's gransons that said John had a brother, Ross Campbell. On Mary's request for pension there was a Louisa Campbell that signed the application. The 1900 census in Missouri lists a Ross Campbell with wife, Louisa. On that Census, Ross says his father was born in North Carolina, but you know that Tennessee was part of North Carolina early on. Would like to get any info that you may have on the Siffords.

Mary's parents were John and Margaret Campbell. I do not know Margaret's maiden name. Mary and her parents are in Graves county Kentucky on the 1850 census. On the 1860 census, Mary and Oliver are in Stoddard County Missouri. John and Margaret Campbell are also in Stoddard County Missouri in 1860. On the 1870 census, John is back in Graves County Kentucky, but I don't see any evidence of Margaret. Did she die in Missouri or Kentucky? I really don't know at this point. Let me know if I can answer any other questions for you. According to the census records, John Campbell was born in Tennessee.

I am researching Oliver Sifford who was married to Mary Campbell in abt. 1859. I know he served in the civil war - does anyone have the pension records? Oliver died around 1878 and Mary is in Oregon County, MO by 1880. I was hoping the records revealed their marriage date; his death date; his actual birth location. Thank you in advances!!!

Debbie

nota typo from me, but from the census taker. He lists them as having the last name Jackson, so Susannah who was deceased at this time may have been an aunt of Jenkins and Joshua. We do know that they were very young when their mother died. Not sure where their father was deceased or not. Maybe she was a sister of their father. One person showed that Susannah's father was Lewis and one showed Josuha and Jenkins as George.
Sorry, I apologize for the information about Susannah being the sister of Joshua and Jenkins 'Sifford. That information came ffrom another source and I did not ask for proof. I imagine that Susannah was a close relative though. I do not know anything about the 3 Siffords and who their parents were or siblings. Susannah and Solomon had a son Ancil who married into my West line and Joshua Sifford married the sister of my gggrandmother Matilda Tinkle who married David West. I did not know Jenkin's name until I saw it on the message board. When you found Solomon Jackson and the Sifford brothers on the 1850 census of Bexer Co., Tx. what was the name that they had in common? There was a typo in your message and I wanted to understand what you ment.

I am helping a friend do research on the Solomon Jackson line. My line is though the Wests. Ancil Jackson s/o Solomon Jackson married Seleta Ann West who is d/o of Wade Hampton West in my direct line. You said that Solomon Jackson married more than once. I did not have but one wife for him, she being Susannah Sifford. The story I have is that Joshua and Jenkins were the brothers of Susannah and after their mother died Susannah and Solomon raised them with their own children. Where were the Jacksons living during the 1850 census? Was it in Wilson Co, Tx or in Missouri? Who did Jenkins marry? Joshua married one of the Tinkle girls, Rebecca Tinkle. Rebecca was the sister of Matilda Tinkle who married David West. David and Matilda are my g-g-grandparents. The West intermarried with all the early families in Wilson Co. Every year on the last Saturday in September we have a combined family reunion in Stockdale, Wilson Co., Tx. for the West, Jackson, Hemby, Sifford, Childress, Tinkle, Bird who ever you are. We are all related.

Re: Sifford Genealogy

Hi Ann -
I'm a newcomer to genealogy and am researching several lines, but mainly the SIFFORD/STARLING families. My GGGrandfather is Jenkins Sifford, b. abt. 1847-48. His daughter, Onie Sifford Starling is my GGrandmother. Jenkins' older brother, Joshua 1845, has several bits and pieces of info regarding his birth, but there is nothing on Jenkins. I'm running into a wall trying to discover what may have happened to their parents when the boys were so young that they'd have to live with relatives. Are you connected to this group in any way? My side of the family would also be interested in participating in the Sifford Surname project, if a full pedigree is not required. Looking forward to a response.

Sifford and variation surname project

Dale Sifford and I have started a Sifford et al surname project to try to get us all over our brick walls. The approach is that we will do two things:
1) Collect pedigrees from as many Sifford et al (Siefert, Siffert, Seaford, etc.) researchers as possible and consolidate them into a single database. We will then identify conflicts and "iffy" relationships, and target them for DNA studies.
2) We will try to find male descendants of the identified family lines to donate DNA samples for the study, which will then either prove or disprove the "legends" that are floating around.

Please go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~siffordsiefert/ for
more information. The more people who participate, the more we will help each other! Please pass this on to any Sifford et al researchers you know.

Ann Winder
He was John Henry Siford, born 1823 in Clearfield Co. He moved to Mahoning County Ohio where he married Laura Turner and then moved to Cass Co. IN.. His father was William Siford born abt 1785 in Germany.. William is my direct ancestor.
I sure would like to make a connection.. But, not much luck so far.. I haven't been able to connect with the Virginia Siferds.. Here's hoping something comes out of it..

Jim

Siferd vs. Siford others

According to my father-in-law there definitely is a connection with Clearfield Co., PA and the Siferd family that ended up in Cass Co., IN. John Henry (2 Feb 1823 - 19 May 1908) is the direct line backward for my in-laws. John H.'s name was spelled several different ways, including Sifart, in the official documents and/or obituary.
As you probably already know, the parents of John H. Siford / Siferd / Sifart were William Siford and Mary (surname unknown).
A question I have is whether or not any of the Siferd / Siford clan moved to Wisconsin at any time. My in-laws were born in IN, as was my husband, but there is some evidence that there have been Siferd (spelled many ways) in Wisconsin in the 1800's. Maybe there was someone in the War of 1812 who was granted land as compensation. A lot of the land given was in Wisconsin and probably other "Western" states.

I am also researching Jenkins Sifford for my sister in law. Do you have confirmed informatiion about Rebecca Hemby being the mother of Jenkins. Another source gave a third wife of Solomon Jackson as Louisa Kessiah Sifford which would indicate she was a widow. Jenkins and his brother Joshua are living with the Jackson family in 1850.

In 1850c Jenkins is living with his brother and Solomon (wife deceased) in Bexar, Calaveras Creek, Texas. They are shown with the last name as Jenkins, but that would be an error unless Solomon had custody of them. I had read from another poster that he had 3 wifes, but I agree that must be incorrect.
If Susanna is the sister of Jenkins and Joshua she appears to quite older being born in 1815 and the boys being born in 1847, so that doesn't fit. What source information do you have on Susanna- parents, etc??

I'm getting into this discussion somewhat late... however, if someone is still querying SIFFORD, my male third cousin is a direct descendant of Jenkins Sifford and would, most likely, do DNA testing. We share the same gg-grandfather, Jenkins. My g-grandmother, Onnie SIFFORD, was a younger sister to my 3rd cousin's g-grandfather, Alfred SIFFORD. Looking forward to hearing from Dale to introduce him to a Jenkins blood-line.
