John Floyd Sikes and Mary Lee (Molly) Chosewood are my great grandparents. So if you have photos, I would love to have a copy. Can you scan them and send as email attachment. Here's my line that goes back to John Floyd:
Aaron Denson Sikes, father
Hosea Preston Sikes, Grandfather
John Floyd Sikes, Great Grandfather

Would love to hear from you. This is so exciting--to think I may get a photo of great grandparents. I may not sleep tonight.
Barbara (Sikes) Hestness
toycik1@yahoo.com

Dennis, I wonder if you have some info to share. My gggrandfather, Jonathan J. Prickett is named on as a trustee to Mary Sikes for a $500 debt from Nathan Sikes. Later, Jonathan's oldest daughter, Anny Jane, marries a Benjamin F. Sikes. Jonathan helps them buy 7 acres in Cumberland County adjoining their land. Wonder what the relationship between Nathan and Jonathan was? Perhaps they were both shoemakers?

Owen Sikes

My gggrandfather was Owen Sikes babt 1812 in NC. He spent most of his life in Alabama from abt 1830 on. He married Sarah C. Miller of Washington Co., Al in 1836. Their children were : Susan, Elijah, Napoleon (my ggrandfather), Catharine, Mary, Elizabeth, Owen M., and Octavia. All except for Owen M. and Elizabeth died prior to 1908. I know Napoleon moved to Texas after he married Barbara E. Butchee in 1866. Their children were Cordelia, Nora, Rufus, John, Beulah, Daisy, Benjamin, (my grandfather) and Warren.
Very little is known about Owen after the 1860 census as there have been court house fires in Choctaw county that destroyed most of the records.
There is a chance that Owens father was Elijah Sikes also from NC. A cousin has provided me with copies of a family Bible records that show some of Elijah's children. Susan, Franklin Martha, and Lewis. Thanks for any help.

Ken Sikes
514 N. Country Club Way
Chandler Az 85226
I know this is an old posting, but I wanted to provide additional info on this. Israel Sikes was the son of John Sikes of New Hanover Co NC. He left a will in 1790, proven in April 1791, naming Israel, to whom he left all of his shoemaker's tools. Also named were Jonathan, Joseph, Isaiah, Jesse, Judith, Sarah, Easom?(Exsom?), and wife Martha. This John Sikes settled along South River in New Hanover Co. NC circa 1760, and had previously lived in Edgecombe Co NC. He appears in Edgecombe Co records as early as 1730.
According to a Hall's Wilmington Gazette in 1798, he was 95 years old when he died "some years ago". I believe he was probably married more than once, and likely had older sons Josiah, James, John, Jacob, and Joshua, not named in his will.
-Tim Upton

Re: Jonas Sikes who died 1843 in TN

I believe that I can help. After reviewing the info below, if you agree, my email is sykes113@frontiernet.net. I have much more.
The extensive research of Dennis Maguire of California and Otis Sikes of Texas has shown that most of the southern Sikes/Sykes families originated in Virginia so our research started there. This research also indicated that there was a Jonas Sikes, Sr. whose Will was recorded in Halifax, VA on December 16. 1784 and that Jonas Sikes, Sr. had a son names Jonas Sikes, Jr. We found that the 1789 tax records of Halifax County, VA show that a Jonas Sikes was listed along with an Elizabeth Sikes (the wife named in Jonas, Sr’s Will) shown as a widow with two sons living with her. We knew from the Dennis/Otis research that a Jonas Sikes, Jr. was born in VA and that his mother was named Elizabeth. Further review of the records showed that this Jonas’ father is believed to have married Elizabeth Hill in Halifax, VA. The 1798 tax records of Halifax County, VA show only Jonas Sikes and a Joab Sikes and the Dennis/Otis research show that Jonas, Sr’s Will also listed a son named Joab. The actual census records for VA in 1800 are not available and the 1810 census records for VA and NC do not show a Jonas Sykes (or Sikes) living in either of these states. The Jonas Sikes who lived in Halifax County, VA during the above periods would have been old enough to have been enumerated in 1800 and 1810 and we believe that he also had children by 1800. We have not found any documentary evidence to indicate when the Jonas Sikes of Madison County moved to Tennessee but it is believed that he probably moved to some location in the middle Tennessee area between 1800 and 1810 and since the census records of TN are not available for those years, this would explain why he couldn’t be located in VA or NC in 1800 and 1810. The Jonas Sikes shown in the 1820 census of Rutherford County, TN is the only Jonas Sikes (or Sykes) located in the available census data for 1820. It should also be noted that there was also a Thomas A. Sikes living in Rutherford County in 1820 and Jonas, Sr’s Will listed Thomas Aldridge Sikes as one of his sons.
Our conclusion is that the Madison County Jonas Sykes is believed to be the son of Jonas Sykes, Sr. and Elizabeth Hill. Jonas, Sr. was born about 1715 in VA and probably died in Halifax County, VA. in 1784 where his Will is recorded. Elizabeth Hill was probably born about 1720 in Halifax County, VA and probably died there in about 1795. Jonas Sikes, Jr., his brother Joab and their mother Elizabeth are believed to be the ones shown on the tax lists of Halifax County, VA in 1789 and 1798.
