Fr. Dewey R. Silas, 69, Oneida, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, May 22, 2007, in Green Bay.
He was born Sept. 9, 1937, in Oneida to the late Dewey J. and Gertrude (Jordan) Silas.
Fr. Dewey was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany.
On Nov. 13, 1976, he married Marlene Schuyler in Milwaukee. He retired from Ampco Metal in Milwaukee.
Fr. Dewey was ordained as a deacon in Milwaukee on May 21, 1994, and then as a priest for the Diocese of Milwaukee on May 1, 1998. He was then called to serve for the Diocese of Fond du Lac at Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in Oneida on Oct. 1, 2001, retiring on March 1, 2007.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his nieces and nephews who referred to him as "Uncle Babe."
He is survived by his wife, Marlene; three children, David (Rosie) Silas, Milwaukee; Angela Silas, Adams, Wis.; Steven Silas, Milwaukee; and his grandchildren, Crystal, Brittany, Eli, and Cheyanne. Fr. Dewey is further survived by his five brothers and sisters, Catherine Lewandowski, Eugene Silas, Marlene Weisrock, Patricia Thompsom, Sandra Risner; and his sister-in-law, Geri (Schuyler) Villalobos.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Verlia Smith, Beatrice Hill; his brother, John Silas; two sisters-in-law, Bernadine Schuyler and Sandra Gerhardt.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2007, at the RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 305 N. Tenth St., De Pere. The Oneida Hymn Singers will sing at 6:30 p.m. followed by a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue after 9 a.m. Friday at Holy Apostles Episcopal Church until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with The Rt. Rev. Russell E. Jacobus, Bishop of the Diocese of Fond du Lac officiating. Burial to follow with a VFW Service in the parish cemetery.
