The marriage record does not give surnames for parents, nor does it indicate whether Mary was a widow or spinster.

Hi,

Do you know anything about Joseph Tanner Boucher who married Eliza Turner Marsh? Her parents were both Tasmanian convicts from England!! That will please you and I have heaps of info on them and further back. Joseph Tanner Boucher's family were from Trowbridge, England. I know about a William Boucher as his son, but nothing about his children or marriage...so what you have mentioned and provided me is all new research. I am a bit pushed at the moment work wise, so I'll come back to you soon. Please forward an email address and we can exchange what info we have. We are obviously related.

Chat soon on email ncboucher@optusnet.com.au

Cheers

N Colin Boucher

I have also tried to contact you by clicking on the "contact icon" for your user name. You do not reply, so I assume you are not getting my messages.

I don't know what else to do. I have never failed to receive messages when persons try to contact me through the Ancestry "contact" icon. Perhaps you could contact ancestry.com. Are you a subscriber of Ancestry? Maybe this is the reason this system is not working? I can give you the brief information that I have on the Silverthorns, but I do not want to post the name and contact information of the person you really need to be in touch with.

Wow, I'm not sure -- I stumbled onto these names through a phone call to Lancaster Historical Society. I have Samuel saying he's 42 and Martha is 37 in 1860 census, that's the best birthdates I have. Name is Zorgas per a marriage cert for Susan (Susanna) that's very hard to read where she declared her parents. My connection is Susan who married Jacob Neff in Dec 1862. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The oldest record of the Silverthorn name that my research could find was in the 14th century tax roles in Somerset County, England. From two centuries later, in the neighboring county of Wilshire, we are able to start tracing the line of many of the silverthorn descendents that came to America through the New Jersey line of an Oliver Silverthorn. There is an earlier line that came to Virginia that I am not sure if has been tied in to England as of yet. Many of the US Silverthorns were scattered during the revolution, since most were loyalists. For that reason, you will find more Silverthorns "per capita" listed in the Toronto phone books and cemeterys than any other area of North America. Also, Salisbury NC seemed to play a role with this surname since it seemed to be "Loyalist holdout" for awhile after the revolution.

Hope this helps

Darcy - I dropped you a line, sorry for the delay.

As I have written to another user, I would suggest to everyone as a first step to please search online here in ANCESTRY. I have uploaded the current "work in process" Gedcom file as compiled from the 4 volume Silverthorn work of 1982 compiled by Frank Fremont Reed.

After checking here first, please post your question. Terry Tageson (my own dear cousin) and I (when possible) will try to respond.

Correspondence with Mr Reed at this date will be somewhat futile as he has "retired" from this effort for health reasons (having talked to him just yesterday, for the first time in a long time).

Kind Regards,
William Silverthorn

Look also for posts from Ted Marmo, "my cousin" (;-), who has posted a good deal of a portion of what an entire GEDCOM would be.

This "project" is not done yet ... but underway.

Regards,
William Silverthorn
Rancho Palos Verdes, CA

I dropped you a line, sorry for the delay. I would suggest to everyone to please search online here in ANCESTRY as I have uploaded the current "work in process" Gedcom file as compiled from the 4 volume Silverthorn work of 1982 compiled by Frank Fremont Reed.

(I assisted Mr Reed with the English Origins portion of his 1982 books.)

No, the book is not available for sale but should be in key library's in Toronto, Detroit, Salt Lake and others where I know that "Monty" sent it. By the way, it is not a "book" but rather a 3 volume set with a bout 20+ supplements.

You're right! Neither could I! Hmm, well, the best thing is to reload it fresh! Click the following (give it an hour or two to load, since there are 19,000+ entries). This file should be the "Enlish Origins" which is only the first half of Volume One of the three volumes from Frank Reed.

I owe a lot of gratitude to Ted Marmo for much of the "keying" of this data.

William

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=agthorno...

Re: Silverthorn name legend

Sorry for the late response to this posted "legend." This is an interesting varient of what legends I am aware of, having also visited the area in question (Glastonbury Abbey, Somerset County).

The legend, at least as recorded and told in those parts, is that when Joseph of Arimathea's staff (carved of a Palestinian thorn tree) touched ground on the isle of Avalon, it took root and flowered. He took this as a sign to bring Christianity to the British Isles.

There is an extension to this legend, and that is that the reason that Joseph of Aramathea came here after Christ's death, was that alledgedly he and Jesus as a child had traveled here earlier.

I love legends as well, but this second one stretches it a bit in my book! ;-)

Lastly, all this has nothing really to do with the Silverthorn name, other than this is the area where the name originates (as does Thorn, Whitethorn, and other varients) and it is assumed that this surname is taken from the famous dual trunk tree that owned this legend.

This tree flowered twice a year, once in the Spring but again at Christmas. There are trees to this day from this area that retain this unique trait. You cannot repeat this unique trait from a seed of the tree's but only by a specific grafting.

Heather -

Not to answer for Ted, but having the same books that Ted has thought I might assist. There is a great deal about Jonathan and his lineage in the Family History, even more about his grandfather Thomas and great grandfather Oliver.

Jonathan is descended from Thomas's second son, also named Thomas. I myself take lineage from George, Thomas's 3rd son (7th child).

How much data do you have so far so I determine what to send you.
Here's the crest and a separate scan of the "warning" (and descriptive) text that goes with it. Note: this is NOT an "official" crest of the Silverthorn Family, rather this crest has "some history" with the Silverthorn family.

These scans are taken directly from the English Origins of the Silverthorn Family History books, a section of the hisotry of which I was a co-author of with Frank Reed.

You are correct, this is an "invalid" coat of arms, as far as being registered with English Heraldry. There is no "official" coat of arms, but this is an "un-official" one that has some "history" to it.

As far as registering in Boston, I would have to do some research. I really have not pursued this route and if you are the first to do so, I am sure that others (including me) would be most interested in your findings and if you do go forward and register it.

Wish I could tell you more. Hope this helps.

Regards,
William Silverthorn
Rancho Palos Verdes, CA

Would love to see what you have. Most of the info that I have seen on our immigrating Silverthorn's, was done by Frank Hodgkins Silverthorne, and later by his great-nephew Frank Fremont Reed. Frank (Monty) Reed last published a pretty complete update in 1982 (I know since I colaborated with him on the Engish Origins, portion).

I would hazard a guess that most information comes from work done by Frank (& his great uncle). If there is anyone else that has done any research, I would be most interested. I am especially interested, since I am a descendent of the Canadian line as well.

Please tell me more.

Regards,
William Silverthorn
Rancho Palos Verdes

Hi,

My database on the Boucher family from Trowbridge goes back to Joseph Boucher b. 1793. However, if you have any info on Joseph and his family, father, mother, brothers or sisters...it may be a start for us to get our heads together.

Hope this email finds you.

Cheers

Colin Boucher, Melbourne, Australia
