There is a possibilty we are connected. My ggrandfather was James E. Silvey, born in Colorado Co TX around 1846. He married Ellen H. Nichols in Nacogdoches and had 3 children. It is said she ran him off because he was a drunk. He remarried Netia Greenhaw, my ggrandmother, and had 7 children and they ended up getting a divorce. I lost track of him after the 1900 Nacogdoches Co census. I have been trying to find out where he went and where and when he died.
His parents were James E. and Malissa Ann Watts Silvey. His father was born about 1815 in MS and died about 1847 in Colorado Co TX. He had a brother, Peter Gus who had come to TX earlier and had a lot of land and other possessions. He died in 1837 and left everything to his brother, James.
Do you think there is a connection?
Looking forward to any responses.
If there's no father listed on the birth cert., it's extremely likely that the mother wasn't married.

See the excellent tutorial at http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/births.htm

If the bride's parents weren't married, she may not have known her father's name. There's a chance that the father named on the marriage cert was invented.

By the way, since these boards are used by people all over the world, it's essential that a query such as yours contain the locations. I only knew you were asking about an English birth because I looked at your other posts. :-)

Unable to find death record

My great great grandmother Hannah Silvey born 1835 Combe, Hampshire, England married William Verry in 1864 in Islington, London. I have found that they divorced in 1871 and I am unable to find Hannah Silvey or Verry in 1871, 1881, 1891 census records or find a death record for her. Unsure if she would still have the name Verry or Silvey again? I have also tried to find marriage records after 1871 under Silvey and Verry but nothing shows up.
Where did she go? I am confused, any ideas?
Thanks
Sarah

Hi
The marriage was in England, Andover and Winifred was born in London. Winifred appears on a census in 1881 as a servant so there are no relatives to look up there. It is her mother on the birth certificate, Hannah who I am unable to find on the census records. I may start looking at death records and see if I can find her that way.
Thanks for the reply
Sarah

We can help you better if you give a location. Was the marriage in the U.S., Canada or Europe? If in the U.S., where? It would also help if you give your great-grandfather's name. Why does Winifred not appear in census records? Transcription error?

I have the marriage certificate of my g grandparents (1892). My g grandmother Winifred Alice Silvey has a father Edward Silvey on the marriage certificate. I ordered what looked to be the only Winifred Alice Silvey birth certificate (1862) that I can find and there is no father listed and just a mother - Hannah Silvey. Do I have the wrong birth certificate, is it possible the father was missed off? The marriage certificate is definitely correct. Neither Hannah nor Edward appear in census records.
I am confused, can anyone help me?
Thanks
Sarah

Re: Georgia Silvey's - Drury and Abraham Silvey (and others)

Hello Deborah,
I have not responded to one of your posts in years, but since the fellows in your string think Abraham and Drury are the same person I need to clear that up. The 1840 Georgia Census lists the following males as individuals: Jesse B. (Campbell Co), Drury (Campbell Co), George W. (Campbell Co), Abraham (Clarke Co), William (Clark Co) and Dorphus H. (Wilkes Co). Drury Silvey was the husband of Mary Ann Womack. Abraham was the husband of Temperance Ann Knapp. They married in Oglethorpe County on Nov 29, 1815. Abraham and Temperance lived in Athens (Clarke Co), p141 1820 Census and p202 1840 Census. Abraham was very active in the legal system. I visited the Clarke Co Library in Athens and found many probate records.
1)1823 court case involving Abraham Silvey vs. David Elder (for use of William Fambrough) 2) Jun 7, 1837 Abraham Silvey and William Mason appeared before John Calvin Johnston 3)Jun 29, 1837 Abraham was appraised by Wm Grayer and Joshua Miller before JC Wood. In 1819, Abraham was 3rd Sgt in Clarke Co Militia and was still on the list in May of 1821.

It is interesting to me that an Abraham Silvey was a survivor of the Titanic (first class).

Anyway, 2 men named Abraham and Drury Silvey lived at the same time. They are 2 different people. I have always thought that Abraham and William Silvey of Clarke Co were brothers.

Silvey's of Mercer Co., KY (early 1800's)

I am descended from Bryant Silvy b. 1824 (Anderson Co.,KY)and possibly the son of Samuel and Betsey Byers (Byars) of Mercer County, KY md. 15 June 1814.

There are several other Silvey's (Sally, Polly, etc) in Mercer Co. and seem to be intermarried with Adkins, Atkins, Adkisons families, etc and going back to Madison and Orange County Virginia.

I am wishing to establish contact with all those that have some connection to this branch of the Silvey'. Information that I have been given seems to state that Sally Silvey, matriarch to this family of Silvey's was married to a Robert. Robert appears in Orange Co. tax lists along with Stephen Silvy who goes to the Carolinas and then ends up in Georgia.

Another George Silvey is also found in the same tax lists of Orange Co. along with Robert and Stephen.

Any information that can be helpful in this research is greatly appreciated. My ultimate desire is to get the facts once and for all and share this freely with those that have need.

Please contact me direct at sgorty@qwest.net

Sam Silvey

Many thanks for your reply.

Emma Jane Cross was my great great grandmother on my mother's father's side (Valentine Tibbert). I've asked my Mum about Harry Silvey but I'm afraid she didn't recognise the name and we have no info on Harry.

The info I do have which may be of interest is:

Emma Cross's parents were Robert (born abt 1816/17) and Caroline (born abt 1817/18). Robert was a blacksmith (source: 1861 census records)/van builder (source: Emma's marriage certificate) and the family lived at 81 Webber Row. Robert was born in St. Georges, Southwark and Caroline (don't know her maiden name) was born in Brentford, Middlesex. Caroline was Robert's 2nd wife (his first was called Ann and was the same age as Robert, but I have no further info about her). I am guessing that Caroline is Emma's Mum but have not confirmed this yet.

In the 1861 census Robert and Caroline have 5 children still living at home: Robert W (age 22), Jospeh (12), Elizabeth (7), Emma (3) aned Walter (1).

Emma married Henry Silvey on 31st December 1876.

Eliza Jane Silvey was born on 17th August 1882 at 15 Gloucester Street.

I have more info on the Silvey's - Henry, his parents, etc,. but as they are not direct ancestors of yours, not sure if it would be of interest to you?

With best wishes.

Paul Fautley

Hello Julie,

My mother, Maureen (nee Tibbert), remembers her aunt Annie living in Hayles Street, SE1 during the 1940's with her second husband Fred Bally.

Do you know how many children Annie had with Bill Miller? I know they married in 1922, William was born in 1924 and Leonard was born in 1926.

I'm not a member of genes reunited, although we used to be. I don't know Keith or anyone on that side of the Tibbert family.

With best wishes.
Paul
Couldn't say, never saw any pictures of my mother when she was young. I do not have a membership to Ancestry.com and Christmas time is not the time to pay for one. My home email is lmetcalf@csuchico.edu I have not looked at all your posts but am interested in finding out more. Can you email me directly? I can remember my mother telling me that her mother had 12 children and I'm not sure how many lived. I do know the names of some of my aunts and uncles. Including my mother, they are: Martha, Audrey (C?Katherine)Leah, Montgomery, Clifford, Harry, Emily and Leah...I forget the rest. I'm 68 and that was a long time ago. I have a picture of my mother's wedding party and two of her sisters are in the picture, Audry and Catherine

Hi, I sent you an email re my mother "Martha Watson Silvey"
It seems you entered her as Mary which is the name of one of her sisters whose last name (married) I referred to in my email to your personal adddress as Albanese. Interesting enough, there are two dates for my mother's birth, her application for a social security card, (in her own handwriting), lists her birth year s 1914 and the Spcial Security death records list it as 1914. Her date of death is Jan 8th, 1979. More later, Loretta

Annie & William's son William was born on 2.12.1923, no mention of a Leonard though.

Does your Mum remember Louisa Watmore (nee Sewell), my Nan.
Lovely to hear from you, I didn't think I would as your message was posted in 2004. Thank you for the extra information - some of which I had already. I have a copy of Robert Cross & Caroline's marriage certificate. Caroline's maiden name was Noakes and her father was called William (Silk Cutter). Robert's father was William (Blacksmith). They married on 30.7.1837 in St Georges, Southwark. Are you a member of GenesReunited? I have recently been in contact with a gentleman called Keith, he is the grandson of Annie Tibbert (Valentine's eldest sister). This was an interesting discovery as my Mum remembers going to Annie's as a child and also remembers her son William (Billy), Keith's dad. Do you know Keith?
Best wishes
Julie Redman
(julieredman2000@yahoo.co.uk

I have started researching my material Grandmothers family and may have a bit of information for you. Emma Jane Cross was my Great Grandmother born 29.1.1858 at 83 Webber Row, Southwark, she married Henry Silvey in 1876 and had 3 children, Emma born 1880, Eliza born 1883 and Harry born 1890. Henry died and Emma remarried to Frederick Sewell on 17.9.1893 in Lambeth and had two children, Frederick born 1895 and Louisa Caroline (my Grandmother) born 14.6.1898. My Mum is very keen for any information on Harry Silvey b1890 as they were close many years ago.

Silvey, Pico Island, Azores to Massachusettes and then to British Columbia, Canada.

The Silvey family of British Columbia Canada had it's foundation roots start about 1860. Joseph Silvey jumped from a whaling ship off the mouth of the Fraser River. His destination was the rich gold pannings on the banks of the Fraser River, somewhere above Fort Yale. Joseph Silvey never made his fortunes digging for gold, but he stayed in BC as a saloon keeper, hotel-store keeper and fisherman and whaler. He made his fortunes in having family and friends. He lived his years having a big family and purchasing a beautiful tree covered island, some 300 plus acres. Several generations of Silvey's later, the BC coast is still home to many hundredds and hundreds of Silvey's; fishermen, loggers and many other contributing jobs, now that fishing and logging are going into history's locker.

Some information on our Silvey branch;

Some say our Portuguese Joe Silvey was born about 1828 and others say about 1830-40. We have baptisms from the church at Calheta de Nesquim on the island of Pico (thanks to cousin Brenda Silvey). The baptisms for Joseph and his 8 siblings are from one family between the years of 1819 to 1842. The parents listed are; Joao' Jose' de Simas and his wife; Francisca Jacinta. The paternal grandparents for Joseph Silvey and his 8 siblings are; paternal grandfather (unknown) and his wife Maria do Espirito Santo, and the maternal grandparents were Antonio Silveira Quaresma Maria Jacinta. All four grandparents were of the same Parish of Calheta de Nesquim on Pico Island.

Children (Joe and his siblings) from the baptism papers, from the church at Calheta de Nesquim on Pico Island, Azores;
1. Manuel, born August 21, 1819
2. Maria, born July 24, 1822
3. Joao, born February 22, 1825
4.Jose (Joseph), born April 23, 1828
5. Francisca, born April 3, 1831
6. Antonio, born May 18, 1834
7. Rosa, born January 26, 1837
8. Domingos, born August 25, 1839
9. Joaquina, born September 12, 1842.

The church at CALHETA DE NESQUIM, Pico Island, Azores http://flickr.com/photos/hilda/2276108392/ This is from Flickr, a wonderful site to look up any image of any pl,ace you wish to see

Pico Island images from Flickr (make sure you open all); http://www.flickr.com/photos/hilda/2276108956/

Note we are posative this is our branch as "OUR" Joseph had named his children every single name listed above, right down to Joaquina and Domingo (that was my great grandfathers name, he was born in Stanley Park, Vancouver in 1874). Another reason why we think this is our ancestor and his siblings (listed above), is because we had oral history of Josephs grandfather being a Scottsman who stayed in Portugal after a war. He was a Highlander and this fits, as the baptisms all don't mention the paternal grandfather.

If you feel you have a connection to the above information or the follwing information (or the information listed above) please contact me;

1. Birthplace; Calheta de Nesquim, Pico Island, Azores, Portugal.
2. New bedford and Massachusettes ports for 1800's whalers.
3. Maybe California (something in the whaling business made him come to the Pacific)
4. Whaling off British Columbia in the 1850-60's
5. Gold panning on the Fraser River of British Columbia, about 1860's.
6. Hotel, saloon and store keeper on Burrard inlet's Granville (Gastown), now called Vancouver.
7. Homesteading in Stanley Park, on Burrard Inlet, Vancouver, BC.
8. Living on a beautiful Gulf Island; Reid Island, BC, Canada and raising his family with his wife.
9. Death of Portuguese Joe Silvey in 1902, Reid Island, British Columbia, Canada
10. Our Joseph Silvey was very illusive on his birth year. It changed from each government document to another... sometimes the dates of birth are many years apart. I feel he changed birth years often so as not to be traced, as he jumped ship around 1860 and always felt insecure about that fact.
11. Joseph Silvey had his surname spelled many different ways, according to the English language and the dominated british and Scottish people who lived on BC's coast back in the 1800's. The surname "Silvey" was a result of many changes and different spellings, but it is close to his real Portuguese surname.
12.Portuguese Joe Silvey (our BC ancestor) recieved the name "Portuguese Joe", when three or 4 other Portuguese Joe's appeared on the BC coast. So to make himself different he too the name "Portuguese Joe #1", while all others fell into the number they took (each took a number to differentiate themselves from one another).

The following are some links to OUR Portuguese Joe Silvey on British Columbia, Canada's west coast. In the 1800's one could be lost on this coast, very easily... that fact is still prevelant today. So Joe Silvey could make a living but be hidden from civilization quite easy.

Please take some time and open up the following links. The first two links are on books about our Joseph Silvey and the following two links are ones I made on yahoo, some years ago;

http://www.harbourpublishing.com/title/TheRemarkableAdventur...
