Dear Brenda,
I think that "Silvey" is just how an English speaker would pronounce "Silva", a very common portuguese family name. I do not think it is related to Simas.
Best regards
Dalthan Simas
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Hi Delia

I have heard of Simas families living in the Ft. Jones area. I believe they came from Ribeiras or Lajes, Pico. Do you know anything about Joseph Semas?
I no longer use rocha@dholmes because I got too much spam, so usually use pico@dholmes (com).
Thanks,
Doug
Hi Jerry,

São Roque is the original location for the surname Simas on Pico. I don't know how you link to S.Roque, but there is a 100% certainty we are distantly related. I would be very interested to know more details about your São Roque ancestors and your link to them. Please contact me directly at:
simas@dholmes.com

Sincerely,
Doug da Rocha Holmes
Azores Genealogy Specialist
Galt, CA
simas@dholmes.com
www.dholmes.com

Simas of the Azores

I have some information on the Simas families who live in the U.S. and their origins in the Azores. The links to it can be found on my website: www.dholmes.com
Eventually, I plan to publish a book on this surname from the Azores and all descendants of them worldwide. At this time, most of my research has been centered on Pico island, but as things progress, I will do more thorough research on São Miguel island. For those interested in the SIMAS surname in the Azores, I likely have information on your family if they came from the central group. And there is a very good chance I know the link to my own Simas families of São Roque do Pico. All from São Roque are my cousins, though many only very distantly.

Doug da Rocha Holmes
Azores Genealogy Specialist
Galt, CA
www.dholmes.com
simas@dholmes.com

Joseph, I grew up in Hanford, CA and have plenty of Simas relatives both in CA and on Pico. I went to high school in the mid-70s with a Joe Simas, in fact. You might try looking at this web site: dholmes.com. This site is run by a genealogist, Doug Holmes, with Simas in his family tree. I ran into him a few years ago and he has quite a data base of information.

James Simsa

I believe my grandfather, James Simsa was born in Lnare, Czech in 1889. He did come to America with his Uncle Joseph..going directly to Chicago area. He left this home at age 16, and came to Michigan to work in the lumber business. Jacob and Emma came to Michigan and lived in the old homestead owned by Carl Wagner. I remember Grandpa Wagner...although I was only 16 months old when he passed away...a smallish man with a beard and sit in a big old leather seated rocker and spit into a brass spittoon. He did meet my grandmother while doing hired hand work...and married when she was still a very young girl. They did only have two children...Edward and, my mother, Leona Mary Simsa. My grandfather told me many stories of his early years and I treasure them all. He was the light of my life, and I loved him dearly. Much of his background is controversial...and unsure. He never saw his mother again and when she died in the late 1940's she had to leave a sizeable fortune to the Communist Czech Government for lack of claim by any of the ancestors who had come to America. This information was told to me by my grandfather.

My great grandmother, Mary Constance Silva, came to the United States with her soon to be husband Domingues Simas around 1925 and settled in Point Loma, California (San Diego). Domingues was from Pico. My grandmother used to say he was from Pico Root (sp) not sure of the spelling.
Would you have any information on my great grandparents?

Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Joseph Whitehouse

Hi! I can't seem to connect to your site. I think my gg grandfather may have been a Simas. He came from Pico, Azores to Ptown, Ma. 1850-1860 on a whaling ship. We were told his given name was "Lenas" {that doesn't seem to exist} so maybe his surname was Simas. Where he didn't speak english maybe it was misunderstood. Any ideas, thank you.
