Classification: Query
Surnames: Simmers, Hamilton, Sheridan, Stuart
I just ran into a listing in the IGI which I wanted to share with you!
Apparenly, someone has reported that a Danial Simmer b. Abt. 1700 in Scotland came to the US and settled in Chester County PA! Danial married "Betty" Abt. 1720, and they had at least one child, Henry Simmer, b. about 1722. I think that I have the dates correct. As many of you may know, at least those who have visited http://www.maxpages.com/simmerscot1 website, there were a great many Simmers in Scotland, and a number from there who left Scotland, settling in a number of countries in Continental Europe. You may also be aware that in Scotland, many of the Simmers listed in the IGI, are listed with various spellings of the name, including a letter Y used for the letter I and with either a single M or a double M, sometimes with the S at the end, other times without! I have actually seen several examples where the same individual's name has been spelled 4 different ways! And we always thought that the names only changed when immigrants arrived here!!

At any rate, there is no guarantee that this Daniel Simmer is at all related to the other Simmers of Chester County or elsewhere, but it is something to ponder, especially since we have little to go on regarding the Chester County Simmers country of origin. The George Simmers b. 1756 in Chester County mentions in his Revolutionary War Pension Application that he fixes his date of birth from the indenture papers! But he is not asked and does not mention his parents name or origin, yet when he is mentioned in "The History of Butler County", he is refered to as George Simmers, a german! But was he? Or was he perhaps a son of Henry Simmer whose parents immigrated from Scotland, if the IGI listing is correct? And who were Robert Simmers and James Simmers, who are listed in the 1790 Census in Chester County? Who were their children and spouses? My interest in this is not academic! The Simmers connections that I am searching for are George Washington Simmers, b. 1846 Colebrook Furnace, (Lebanon Co PA?), and his father and grandfather, both of whom may have been named Daniel Simmers! It is not likely, however, that they are the Daniel Simmers' who married Jenkins and Guest!

If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them!

George Washington Simmers was a grain and feed grocer in Harrisburg PA, in business with his mother and stepfather, Mary Simmers Sheridan and Richard Sheridan. George's sister Sarah Sheridan, married John Hamilton and lived also in Harrisburg! Would love to know any of George's siblings, parents and parents of Mary Sheridan, who may also have been called Margaret. Mary's parents may have been Stuart or Stewart?
