Becky,

The Missouri State Archives has created a database of digitized Missouri Certificates of Death from 1910 to 1958 (http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/). The database has a searchable index that links to a digitized image of the original death certificate. You can search by last name, first name, county (114, plus St. Louis City), and death year.

The Missouri death certificates database holds a digitized Missouri Certificate of Death for Lauren Lafayette Stallings. Some of the information it includes [my notes in brackets] is:

Date/Time of Death: 16 March 1940/6:52 AM
Place of Death: St. Mary’s Hospital, Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri
Cause of Death: Staphlococcic septicemia
Due to: Fracture of left hip with secondary infection
External Cause: Accident, 2800 Main Street, Kansas City, Missouri
Other Conditions: Terminal bronchopneumonia
Major Findings: Asphyxiation
Usual Residence: 2309 Clark, Parsons, Kansas
Age at Death: 53 years; 11 months; 26 days
Date of Birth: 20 March 1886
Place of Birth: Coffeyville [Montgomery County], Kansas
Personal Particulars: Male, White, Married
Occupation: Locomotive Engineer
Industry or Business: M.K. & T. R. R. Co. [Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, the “Katy”]
Wife: Ramona E. Simmers
Name of Father: Lauren Simmers
Birthplace of Father: Ohio
Maiden Name of Mother: Mary Ellen Freeman
Birthplace of Mother: Ohio
Informant: Mrs. Ramona E. Simmers, Parsons, Kansas
Removal: 16 March 1940, Parsons Kansas
Burial: Parsons, Kansas
Funeral Director: J.W. Wagner, Kansas City, Missouri

In 1900, a Lorin W. Simmers (b. January 1857, Indiana), day laborer, was listed as head of a household in Keokuk City, Jackson Township, Iowa. In addition to wife Mary L. (b. July 1862, Ohio), the household included daughter Ethel M. (b. May 1884, Kansas), son Lorin L. (b. March 1886, Kansas), and daughter Gladys L. (b. January 1899, Kansas).

I don’t know where Lauren and Mary Simmers were living in 1910.

On the 1920 census, Loran W. Simmers (62, b. Indiana) and Mary L. Simmers (58, b. Ohio) were living in Douglas County, in south-central Missouri. Coincidentally, or perhaps not, the Missouri death certificates database has a death certificate for John L. Simmers, who died from cardiac failure in Roy, rural Douglas County. His Missouri Certificate of Death included this information:

Date of Death: --?-- May 1946
Place of Death: Roy (rural), Douglas County
Cause of Death: Cardiac failure
Usual Residence: Roy (rural), Douglas County
Age at Death: 85 years; 1 month; unknown days
Date of Birth: 16 March 1861
Birthplace: Hicksville, Ohio
Personal Particulars: Male, White, Widowed
Usual Occupation: Farming
Father’s Name: Jeremiah Simmers
Father’s Birthplace: Ohio
Mother’s Maiden Name: Hattie Shaw
Mother’s Birthplace: Ohio
Informant: Mrs. G.C. Luce, Parsons, Kansas
Burial: Goodhope, 24 May 1946
Funeral Director: Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava [the Douglas County seat], Missouri

I hope this provides some clues.

Happy hunting,

Clete

Hi, Edgar!

Are you of the family of Clarence M. and Virginia M. Simmers? I don't know Virginia's maiden name?

I believe that this family of Samuel Simmers who was married twice, first to Mary Mitchell and then to Hannah J. (?) b. in MD (father b. England, mother b. MD ). Samuel and Hannah, alone had 12 children and 9 were living in 1900!

At any rate, I believe that Samuel was son of James Simmers, b. May 4, 1797, and that James was one of 4 or more brothers who immigrated to Chester County from Wales, and that that Simmers family was originally from Scotland or Ireland before coming to Wales? I believe that James left Chester County for Delaware and eventually ended up in East Saginaw Michigan where he died in about 1870?

A lot of us have worked on this "Simmers" family and we've made a great deal of progress! Actually, it is a number of families with widely different origins!

Please share your tree with us! Many of us would be interested in seeing pictures if you have any, and we do have a website created by Patty Stallings, which has a good number of pictures of Simmers from most of the groups just mentioned!

Sincerely, Tom Simmers in Apple Valley CA
tsimmers @ charter.net
http://www.maxpages.com/Simmerssurname
http://www.maxpages.com/Simmerscot1

Hi! My name is Shannon. Carl Simmers was my Great Uncle on my father's side. He actually passed away about a yr or so ago. He had on accident on the stairs and hit his head. He died a few days later. He sent my Aunt Sherry (His niece) a copy of a lot of things. The records you mentioned, I do not have. I took over the research after he passed away. Sherry made me copies of everything she has. I even have tons and tons of old photos. If you don't mind, could you send me a copy of everything you have from my Great Uncle Carl aka Bob? Here's my email:
ssimmers082207@yahoo.com
Thanks soooo much!
Shannon

Re: William Simmers, MD

William E. Simmers found in Plains Rockingham VA in 1927 with parents, William Simmers and Myrtle Simmers, and siblings, Marvin S. Simmers and Dora V. Simmers likely go back to Michael Zimmer/Simmers and Christian Simmers who were early Settlers in Rockingham County and were Mennonites. Mildred Durrer is found in Ruckersville, with parents Marco and Pansy Durrer and next door, Marco's parents Sam Durrer b. abt. 1857 and Blanche Durrer b. abt 1859. This Simmers family appears to have emigrated to the colonies in the mid to late 1700's and may have settled first in PA before entering the Shenandoah Valley! At least that is the way I remember my research of several years Ago? Patty May Stallings and Nance Simmers have done quite alot of Research as have several others. There is also a Simmers website which displays old photos of members of this family. Please contact me at tsimmers @charter.net if you would like to have access to that website.

William Simmers b. 9/30/1917 d. 1/1987 Baltimore MD

Sincerely, Tom Simmers in Apple Valley CA
Please let us know who you are! Much of this info was researched by several researchers! Evelyn Simmers Beck, Celia Hartmann, and Jim Vogley! Sorry if I left out others who also deserve credit! This is just some of it, but hopefully you'll find some which you did not have!

Sincerely, Tom Simmers in Apple Valley CA

P.s. I'm from a different Simmers line which is primarily from Chester Count PA.

ID: I09080
Name: Isaac Isaiah SIMMERS 1 2
Sex: M
Birth: 30 MAR 1766 in Lower Dublin Twp, Philadelphia Co, PA 1 2
Death: 19 OCT 1823 in Beersheba, Clay Twp, Tuscarawas Co, OH 1
Burial: 21 OCT 1823 Beersheba Cemetery, Tuscarawas Co, OH 1
Baptism: 26 JAN 1800 Gnadenhutten, Northampton Co, PA 2
Reference Number: 9080
Note:
From the Beersheba Church Book:

page 7:
[1806]
February 22nd. Isaac Simmers moved with his family in their newbuilt house
and the 24th Boas Walton's house got raised, and the 21st of March he moved
in the same with his family.

==============

The following article was sent to the compiler Oct. 1999, by cousin
Jim Vogely. I am unsure if the article comes from the "Strasburg Record" or
the "New Philadelphia Tribune," as one is mentioned at the beginning of the
article and the other at the end.

Strasburg Record January 22, 1908, page 37:

Isaac Simmers

The following sketch, which may be of interest to some of the older
residents of the county, was found amond the papers of the late
Josiah Rhodes, who died at Gnadenhutten in the year 1901. Mr. Rhodes
also compiled a family history, which is now in the possession of
Mrs. Lewis Winsch, daughter of Josiah Rhodes, contains the names of the
Edmond, Fribley, Walton, Heller, Demuth and Simmers families, descendents,
either by birth of marrieage of the Rhodes ancestor.

Isaac Simmers, youngest son of Henry and Mary Simmers, was born in
Philadelphia, Pa., March 30, 1766. His father moved from that city to
Westmoreland County, Pa., while Isaac was a boy, and purchased a farm. At
that time the Indians still lived in that part of the state, often doing
depredations to the white settlers. The family being notified one day that
a band of Indians was approaching all left the house and secreted
themselved. The Indians cautiously approached, but finding the place
deserted entered and plundered it of clothing and victuals. After seaching
the premises they finally discovered Isaac, and captured him. They also
discovered his brother Henry, but he succeeded in escaping and secreted
himself. The Indians took several other prisoners from the same neighborhood,
among them a woman with a babe in her arms, a neighbor of the Simmers'. They
took Isaac and the other prisoners with them, their destination being
Upper Sandusky, Ohio. After several days' march through the wilderness the
woman became exhausted with her burden--the child--and could not keep up
with the other prisoners. The Indians urged her along for some time, but
seeing the child was too much of a burden for her, one of them took it from
her arms and struck it in the head with his tomahawk, killing it instantly,
and threatening her with the same fate if she did not keep up with the
company. When night came on the prisoners slept upon the ground, their arms
and feet being bound with cord and fastened to stakes driven in the ground.
Arriving at Sandusky, Isaac was placed in the family of an old Indian woman,
who had several boys of her own, where he made his home for three years. The
old woman treated him kindly and he was allowed all the liberty the other
boys enjoyed, often going fishing or hunting, but always accompanied by
several others to prevent his escape.

After the war was over, and peace declared, all prisoners were released, and
Isaac was told by the Chief that he was now at liberty to do as he pleased,
either remain with them and become a member of the tribe or he could return
to his father's home. Isaac decided to return home, and with an Indian guide,
started on the homeward journey. After traveling several days he came
within sight of home and saw his father and brothers in the field at work.
saac soon made himself known to them and there was great rejoicing, as they
supposed he had been killed by the Indians. He remained with his parents for
some years. In October, 1792, he was married to Rebecca Walton, and took
charge of the farm on which his father lived, caring for his parents until
the death of his mother in 1804. Shortly after he moved from Pennsylvania.

After arriving in Ohio, he leased sixty acres of land from the Moravian
Society, a part of the 4000 acre tract belonging at that time to the
Moravian Society at Bethlehem, Pa., now owned by Benedict Gross. There he
erected for himself and family a log cabin, and lived there contented and
happy.

His father, Henry Simmers, died Feb. 13, 1817, aged 97 years. Isaac died in
1823, aged 57 years. His wife, Rebecca Simmers, remained on the farm until
the lease expired. She then made her home with her daughter,
Hanna and Samuel Rhodes until her death in 1829.

The youngest daughter of Isaac and Rebecca Simmers was Charlotte, who
married Joseph Demuth, and lived to be the oldest one of the family. She
died July 18, 1896, aged 81 years. -- New Philadelphia Tribune.

Father: Heinrich SIMMERS b: 20 JAN 1719/20 in Strasburg, On the Rhine, Ge died Feb. 13, 1817
Mother: Maria CHRISTOPHER b: 1729 in Philadelphia, PA

Marriage 1 Rebecca Elisabeth WALTON b: 29 JUN 1769 in Byberry Twp,
Philadelphia Co, PA
Married: 16 OCT 1792 in Gnadenhutten, Northampton Co, PA 1 3
Note:
"Church Book of the Brethren's Congregation at Beersheba on the Westside of
the Muskingum River opened in the Year of Our Lord 1805, Clay Township,
Tuscarawas County, Ohio"

page 4:

November 19th [1805 --Celia]
The congregation increased by the arrival of the Brethren and Sisters Boas,
Jr. [sic] and Rosanda Walton with 3 children, Isaac and Rebecca Simmers with
5 children, and by the single sister Sarah Simmers, all these from
Gnadenhutten on the Mahony.
Update! Re: Simmer/s of Chester County PA

Thanks to another researcher, Deneen Cirafisi, I can now extend my Tree backwards from George W. (Washington) Simmers, b. 1846, probably at Colebrook Furnace, near border of Lancaster County and Lebanon County, about 20 miles from Harrisburg!

George's Grandfather has since been identified by George W. Simmers, himself, as George Simmers, (b. <1775> Chester Co. d. <1830>) a school teacher up to 1829, in or near Warwick, Chester County PA, and Nancy or Ann Clark. Most probably, George's children were Thomas S. Simmers, b. <1818>, married twice to Elizabeth Thorogood and Eliza A. (-?-), parents of Oliver and Allen Harrison Simmers of the Mill at Anselma, and Henry Simmers, also a resident of W. Pikeland, Chester Co, who married Anna Moses, and perhaps Daniel Simmers, father of George W. Simmers, our subject. The father of George Simmers, Sr. was a James Simmers who appears right next to Robert Simmers in the 1790 Census of E. Nantmeal town. Chester Co, who arrived from Wales on or about 1770 and worked in the "iron mines"!

It now appears that a good many of the early Simmers' in Chester County are in some way relate to James Simmers or Robert Simmers!

If anyone has information regarding any of these families, or any Simmers in Chester County, please forward them to me! I would be most grateful!!

Sincerely, Tom Simmers in Apple Valley California
tsimmers @ charter.net

P.s. By all means contact me if you, too are looking for info regarding any Simmers' families!

I'm a cousin of Deneen's and I was in contact with her a while ago. I have since been researching and have a little more information after checking out a church where my eldest ancestor was born.

According to my mother, who heard it from her father, Charles H. Simmers, All the Simmers of Chester County go back to one person who emigrated to Pennsylvania in the 1600s via Holland (they weren't from Holland but they came by way of Holland). Now, my grandfather had been very interested in the Simmers of Chester County. He worked for the Philadelphia Electric Company and every time he traveled for them he'd look in the phone book and call up any Simmers where he was currently staying and talk and find out how they were related. What he said is part of what he got from his research, but my mother had been too young to really be interested in it when he told her about it.

I have been since trying to find his family tree, but haven't been able to do so, so whether or not I can confirm his claims is yet to be determined.

~Chaz

The one on the national archives listing is incorrect!

====+++

Although I have occasionally come across references to Simmers in Africa, it seems that it was for people who ultimately migrated elsewhere, such as New Zealand or Australia, possibly!

For whatever it might be worth, a referal to a website which is badly in need of attention:
http://www.maxpages.com/Simmerscot1

Sincerely, Tom Simmers in Apple Valley CA

P.s. I appreciate your effort to provide more info in the way of cities in SA and the time frame, which spans much of the time during which there were Europeans in Africa, generally, but the most informative thing to me was the notion that the unknown Simmers, was a Scottish soldier. A British soldier born in Scotland, most likely? As with Eileen, my suggestion to you is to inform us regarding information which you have which tells you that this person existed? You say speculation, but what is the lineage going backward to this person, beginning with an ancestor whose identity you are comfortable disclosing (often a deceased relative)? In other words, what is the genealogy going backward from a grandparent of yours? You may find that doors will open up if you are forthcoming with your info, even if it is mostly speculative.

There is a speculation that my great-great-great grandfather was a Scottish soldier and his boat docked in Cape Town, he and his brother, he then ran away from the boat and stayed on in Cape Town, we don't know anything further, it could have been in the 1800's or 1900's, we dont have a name or anything. And the strangest thing is that the only Simmers family that is alive, is colords(a mix between white and black). Not that I'm racist, but we don't know of any white Simmers families in South Africa that is alive

Hi

I am descended from a James Simmers who hailed from Aberdeenshire SCT and was thought to be born approx 1831. He was brought up in his native country, and for some years managed his brother's farm. In 1857 he arrived in Victoria, Australia and for some years engaged in mining. He finally settled in Tumut NSW, where he became a very respectable citizen, businessman and was one of the first elected alderman. He married (Miss Spiers) in 1870.They had one son
George and four daughters - Barbara,Isabell,Florie and my great grandmother Sarah.Note Sarah's mother died during her birth(1881). James latter married her dear friend Annie Watson.
I recently read over letters (dated 20.1.1925 and 26.1.1925) my grandfather Donald McDonald had sent his mother(Sarah McDonald nee Simmers). During his travels on board a merchant ship he visited New Zealand and was responding to Letters he had received from his mother (Sarah) and Aunt Bell(Isabell)requesting that he look up their cousins.
He spoke of a James Simmers (Teacher / Headmaster)Dannevirke High School Hawkes Bay and had received a telegram and invitation from James and another from Eustace Simmers to visit with them both. Donald unfortunately could not accept invitations as he was about to set off for Vancouver BC. He had passed on the addresses of his mother and Aunt to each of these gentleman.
Note: There was also mention of Doctor Simmers.....
I look forward to your reply.
Cheers ,Lisa Packard.

Our family has no records of James's parents, but I do have photographs of James and I think that one of his daughters moved back to Scotland.

Sarah married another Scotsman Donald McDonald so that is the name that carries on Simmers in Tumut.

All the best. Drop me a line if this is of interest

Lisa

Hi, I thought maybe you hadn't since you said 9 kids and there were 10 living in 1841.
At any rate, folks searching this line are more likely to connect with you with complete names of everyone.

Not my line, but following all the kids from 1841 and where they ended up is quitle easy and will likely get you where you want with contact of current decendants.
Scotlandspeople has all the birth, marriages and deaths.
