Simms of PA, OH, IN before 1850

Trying to find the Simms family that my 4G's grandfather, Jeptha Conner (b.1826 IN), married into. His wife was Susannah Simms (b.1830 OH). They married in Indiana 1849 and appear in the 1850 US Census in Adams Township, Cass Co. IN listed with their first child and what appears to be Susan's mother, a "Catharine Sims" age 64 born in PA.

Just recently I discovered in that same 1850 census the following "Sims" family listed only 2 pages prior to that of my Jeptha and Susan. Although her age is listed as 65 instead of 64 it would seem that the same Catherine Sims is listed with them (technically possible since this page of the census was dated Aug 24th whereas Jeptha and Susan's page is dated Aug 26th):

1850 US Census - Adams, Cass, Indiana
John Sims M age 30 born OH
Elizabeth " F 26 IN
Jerome " M 3 IN
Cynthia " F 2 IN
William " M 55 PA
Catharine A. " F 24 OH
Fereley(?) " F 22 OH
Catharine E. " F 65 PA
Rebecca " F 1/2 IN

Simply speculating then, Susan's parents could possibly be a William and Catherine E. Simms (b.1795/1785 PA), along with siblings John, Catharine A and Fereley(?) - all born in Ohio like Susan and fairly close in age (Susan was 21 in this census).

Anyone out there have further information on this William and Catharine Simms? or could at least prove or disprove their link to Susan? anything on the possible siblings?

Joseph Thomas Simms & Eliza "Lizzie" Lee

I am searching for any information on Joseph Thomas Simms born about 1852 in KY or TN who married Eliza "Lizzie" Lee, born about 1858 in Virginia, on August 25, 1875 in Larue, KY. They had a son named John H. Simms born about 1877 in Kentucky. By the 1880 census they were living in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana. I can't find any information after that on them or their children due to the fact that there isn't an 1890 census (fire).

I think I am related to Eliza Lee. I think she is the same Eliza Lee who is in the 1860 census with my 4th great grandmother Fanny Cook Lee in Russell County, Virginia.

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance.
Keli
keli97@comcast.net
I have slightly different info, but the families seem to be the same.

William Sims, son of James Sims & Mary Ewing, b abt Jan 1801, MD;
Sarah Boggs, b Nov 1806 OH or VA;
m Feb 1828 in Belmont Co, OH, then moved to Knox Co, OH and had at least 5 sons: Ezekiel, John, Johnson, William, and Ewing. My line descends from son William.

James Sims, b 1792 MD, also moved to Knox Co, OH. Had 3 wives: Mary McConnell, Elizabeth ?, and Maria ? I'm researching his line now and trying to prove he and William were brothers.

Can you tell me how you verified James was the son of James Sims and Mary Ewing? And are you still researching this family - what info are you looking for?

D Rodack

Looking for a clue/hint to point me in the right direction of finding out about the ancestry of my great-great-grandmother Betsy SIMMS.

Here's what I have already:
>Born 1870, Bolton, Lancashire
>Father: James SIMMS
>1871 census - think there is a record, but haven't yet been able to check it
>1881 census - can't find a record via familysearch
>1889 marries James HOLT, Darwen, Lancashire
>2 children in 1894 and 1895
>1901 census - children are shown living with Leonard and Betsy MOORE - suspect this is Betsy SIMMS - don't think they were ever married.
>1907 - 3rd child, father not shown on birth cert.
>1911 - living with all three children in Padiham, Lancashire, shown as a widow.
>1912 marries George STEVENSON, Burnley, Lancashire
>1935 dies Burnley

My main query is who were Betsy's parents, and when were they born?

Any clues or other info much appreciated.

Regards,
Martyn

Cost of DNA test has dropped again and the SIMMS/SYMES project is now up to 66 members

In case anyone you know is interested, they have dropped the price of Y chromosome DNA testing at FamilyTreeDNA.com - at least for the month of July to $199 for 67 markers. The cost for 37 markers is only $119, but if any interested parties can go the extra 80 bucks it is well worth it to make matches much more precise. The SIMMS/SYMES project is now up to 66 submitters of DNA for Y chromosome testing from all over the world and includes surnames Simes, Simms, Sims, Syme, Symes, Symmes, Syms, and other surname variations. The Y DNA results on the primary Sims DNA project site is:
http://pages.sbcglobal.net/jimsims/sims/sims-Y-project/SimsS...

You can join thru this link
http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Symes

- Allan Griffith, Bloomington, Illinois, USA.- magrif@verizon.net

They had a son Henry in 1834, daughter Charlotte in 1836, George in 1838 and then a Richard Andrew in 1841. Because names were reused, it may be that their first son was a Richard, born 1831 and who had died early in life.
They were in Brighton.
Hope this helps - if this is the same person you have helped me to as I kept drawing a blank as to where MAry Ann came from / maiden name etc.
let me know!
mike

My research shows that the Sims in and around LaFayette were not closely related to the Simms from Coweta Co. Ga and Hancock Co. Ga. The AL Sims were from the South Carolina group and the Ga. Simms from North Carolina/Virginia. Would like to see what you have on either group. My Simms in Chambers county were from the Cusseta and Lee Co. area and related to the Coweta Co, group, still a Simms cemetery located in Cusseta. He was named as a son in law in the 1802 Sampson County will of Shadrack Jones. Assuming then he was married to an unknown Jones. The two children I currently have are Mary Sims and a Dorcas Sims. It appears in this census he had many more children. Would love any leads about this family.

My family tree is at Rootsweb.com. You can see most of what I have there. The database is ch3874.

My source for John Dickinson is the DAR lineage book which is also a source for Robert Simms and Sarah Dickinson. Coweta County, GA at the US General Web Archives on Rootsweb has that.

I didn't know Sarah Simms married George Tilley. Thanks for the info. My guess is that it was in Hancock County so will look there.

If you need further information, my E-mail address is
seansgann@aol.com.

It is true that some of the Shenandoah recruited crewmembers changed their name somewhat when they signed aboard, but the only one of your ancestors that "might" fit would be Samuel Simms (born 1846). The Shernandoah crewmember James Simms was definarely in Australia in February 1865 and had likely been there for awhile. So I don't know if yours is the right one or not. If he was he would have had to return to New Zealand from England around Nov. or Dec. 1865 or thereafter. You would need to search out when Samuel arrived there. Would be interesting to know if he is the same individual. If he was, he would be an important individual.

The name "Simms house in Texarkana, Ark" is written on the back of photo. The photo may of been taken in the late 1800's according to the dress the woman is wearing.
This is a large house with white fence accross the front.
You can not make out the faces of people on the porch but there is two men, a child and a lady.
The hand writing on the back was written by a Ball that married a DeRossett.
John Scott

Cliff,

The coastguard connection you mention is my great grandfather, Joseph Simms. My grandmother was Dorothy Lucy Simms, and married Percy Hawkes. As a child, the family moved quite regularly to coast guard stations along the south coast - I remember her talking of Kimmeridge, Southwick (near Shoreham) and Hastings, and I think there were a couple of others. Joseph's wife lived to around 1960, last residing in Fareham.

Marmaduke SIMMS - Nelson Co., KY

What happened to Marmaduke?? In the never ending attempt to find the ancestors of Samuel SIMMS 1781-1833, he is somehow connected to a Marmaduke SIMMS of Nelson Co. KY. My Samuel and his wife Mary MOLOHON were both born in Maryland, according to census records of their children. They both died during the cholera outbreak in 1833. They lived North of St. Mary in an area that was in 1833 part of Washington Co. In 1834 the area was included in Marion Co. They are buried at St. Charles cemetery, St. Mary, Marion Co., KY.
--------
Timeline for Marmaduke SIMMS
1770-1780 Born in Maryland -----

4 February 1803 Washington Co., KY
A Marmaduke SIMMS appeared before Washington County Court for Samuel SIMMS on marriage bond.-----

17 March 1809 Washington Co., KY Deed book C, p 401
Indenture between Wm Rice and wife Sarah,... and James Mollohan, Wash Co. for 230 lbs. 193 ac in Wash. Co. between dividing waters of Cartwrights and Hardin Creek bounded by Walter Overton.
Wit: Robert E. Yates, MARMADUKE SIMMS, William Rice, SAMUEL SIMMS, Sarah Rice" -----

1810 Nelson Co. Census
SIMS, Marmke 1 M 26-45 (born 1765-1784) To young to be Samuel's father probably his brother or step brother or some kin. -----

1830 Nelson Co., KY census SIMMS, Marmaduke (living in Bardstown) 1 M 50-60(born 1770-1780) Apparently never married. THERE NO LISTING OF A MARMADUKE AFTER 1830. He could have died during the Cholera outbreak.
----------
I am sure they are related to the Marmaduke SEMMES of Charles Co., Maryland but how?
Any leads concerning either of the SIMMS would be appreciated.
Corine's mother was known as "Sleetie". They are from Mississippi. I have no further information. Any leads would be ever so helpful. I am stuck!

Jenny

Info on Corrine Elizabeth Sims

My great grandmother Corrine Elizabeth Sims, born 22 June 1900, married Jeffie Jefferson Smith in Jones Co. Mississippi. They had my grandmother, Irma Lee Smith, on 12 April 1926. This is all the information I have. Jeffie Jefferson seems like a unique name, but I can not find out any information about the Sims or the Smiths. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,
Jenny Keller

Re: Baltimore Area SIMMS death notices

Hello,
I am researching my GGgrandmother Margaret Elizabeth Simms. I can't find her family anywhere in PA as is written in all of the census stating that her parents were born there. I have a feeling that she was actually born in MD as were many of the members of the McCardle family that she married into. It is also thought that her name was Margery instead of Margaret. She was born in the year of 1822, give or take a year or two........ She married Robert Alfred McCardle who was the son of David and Sarah (McMullen) McCardle.
Do any of these names sound familiar to you?
