My ggrandfather William Simpson was born in Canada in 1840. He lived in Sandwich, DeKalb Co, ILL in 1880. Most of his children were born in Sangamon Co. He married Clara Riley b. PA. There were six children: Elizabeth, Joseph C., Oscar J., John Leroy aka R.J. (my grandfather)m.Sarah Griffiths in Sheridan, WYO, and William H.. Clara's mother Elizabeth lived with them in the 1880 census. In the 1870 census she lived with her husband Robert from England in a home close to the Simpsons.

Benjamin D. Simpson from Gasconade and Osage counties in MO. was my 4th G Grandfather. From there, I descend through son William and grandson Samuel. I have already had DNA testing performed, both Y and MtDNA. Would be willing to share results and compare notes on the Simpson line if you like. I am still working on this line and would welcome lineage information dating back as far as you have been able to research. Looking forward to hearing from you. You can contact me directly at twilson.mail@embarqmail.com. Thanks...

Still sounds like a possiblity! Before they were in IL, my Simpsons were in Caldwell/Livingston Co KY from about 1800. They came there from the Catawba River area of NC/SC, where they had been from about 1760. Before that, there were a few years in Augusta Co VA, and before that, at least three generations in MD.

My direct line guy, Benjamin D. Simpson (who descended from three Williams in a row) was only in IL a few years. He shows up in Gasconade/Osage Co MO around 1830.

My Simpson family was fond of the names William, James, John, and Daniel. They also threw in a few Moses, Isaac, and Reubens. Ring any bells? About the only way we will know for sure is if each of us can find a male DNA donor. Got any?

Could you supply some dates on your William Simpson, and who he married? I don't know anything about Johnson Co IL, but I know quite a bit on Simpsons in Sangamon and Saline Cos, IL from about 1820 on. My Benjamin D. Simpson was descended from three Williams in a row, and I know what happened to his son William. But I have lost track of his nephew William! If your guy turns out to be the same guy, then I can get you back to the late 1600s in MD.

William was supposedly one of the first settlers of Johnson county, Ill. Does anyone know where I could purchase the book "History of Johnson County"?
also I'm looking for photos, people or places. I descend from Daniel Simpson, John Reed Simpson, Izora Simpson. They moved from Johnson County to Randolph County, Illinois and later to Missouri and Kansas.
Thanks!

I don't have anything on who Elizabeth's parents were, but I sure would like to! She and her husband Thomas Osborn had a daughter named Arilla who married John Simpson. Their son Benjamin Franklin Simpson and his wife Ann Cash had a son named Rufus Marion Simpson. He and his wife Sarah Jane Mize had a son named Adolphus Clark Simpson. He was my grandfather.

Elizabeth is bound to be a cousin to the other Simpson line of John's family. But I haven't found the connection.
Re: Rodham Simpson Family

Yes indeed we have a match. Rodham was married to Mary Thomas/Thomason in 1799 Henry Co. VA, near where John & Hannah lived, and their marriage bond was signed by a son-in-law of John & Hannah Simpson, Joseph Thomason. This Rodham might have been related to Thomas Simpson's family in Pittsylvania Co., VA or he could be connected to the Orange Co., Caswell, NC Simpsons (John Simpson brother of James sold property in NC and Henry Co., VA before leaving for KY with his brother.) I have been investigating various family groups during that time and in that area to find out if I could connect him, but so far no luck. Rodham went to Tennessee by 1809 and was a ferryman on the Holston River. He and family finally ended up in Indiana. I am descendant of Rodham, b. 1774 VA by his son, John Simpson of VA who married Nancy Eaton, via g-grandfather, George M. Simpson, who was born in Elkhart, Indiana in 1840 and was Constable of Benton Township, Goshen, Indiana in 1862. He served in the 74th Indiana/Voluntee infantry during the civil war and finally moved to Iowa. He was married to Caroline Miller and had 10 children one of which was Frederick Homer Simpson who married Myrtle Moss and had Mary Frances Simpson, my mother. I have been following the Eaton side of my line as their appeared much more available info. If you would like to see the work I have done on this line, please visit www.eatongenealogy.com where I am the Web Editor/Web Master and VP of the Eaton Families Association.

Nice to learn of another "cousin."
POW/MIA Korean War

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Bath County, Kentucky as his home of record. His remains were never recovered. Our government has no family contact at this time for this soldier

Soldier: CHARLES LESTER SIMPSON
Born: Aug. 30, 1929
Date of loss: December 12, 1950 MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
See my reply to Dottie! If we can connect you to her Simpsons, then we can get you back to the late 1600s in old Baltimore Co MD. Dottie and I both descend from William Simpson II (1721-1825, yes, 104!). William's first wife was Avarilla Perkins (md 1742), my ancestress. William's second wife was Elizabeth Hawkins (md 1768), Dottie's line.

Hello, again, Dottie!
Larkin was not an unusual name in the late 1700-1850 or so, as I have run across several of them.
I have run across your Osburns while researching our common ancestors in old Baltimore Co. And I betcha "Arilla" was a nickname for "Avarilla", which was a well used name in old Baltimore Co (the first Mrs. William Simpson II was Avarilla Perkins, from whom "my" Benjamin Franklin Simpson descends).
One of our common ancestors seems to have been John Gilbert, who about 1670 sold 1600 acres of land to one Abraham Wild. Abraham Wild was the Captain of a ship called Avarilla. I am investigating whether our ancestors may have arrived in MD aboard the Avarilla.
The Madison name is of interest to me, too. My Benjamin Franklin Simpson married Anne Branson 1839. She was descended from a Margaret/Margarith Madison, who seems to have been a cousin of President James Madison. I think my Simpsons and my Bransons knew each other generations before Benj and Anne got it together in Gasconade CO MO!
Ain't this fun?

Hi, Cousin! I do believe your James Simpson could have been/probably was the son of William Simpson II (1721-1825, yes, 104) and Elizabeth Hawkins. Elizabeth was William's second wife, married 28 January 1768 in Rowan Co NC. I descend from first wife, Avarilla Perkins, and through William Simpson III (born about 1748 Augusta Co VA, died 1803 Caldwell Co KY).

William Simpson I was born 14 Feb 1694/95 in old Baltimore Co MD. He married Elizabeth Prebbles, who was born Dec 1699 in old Baltimore Co. The area is now in Harford Co MD.

William Simpson I was the son of Richard Simpson and Anne Gilbert. Richard Simpson was born no later than 1663, but I am not convinced it was in Baltimore Co. Some folks say it was in St. George's Parish, but that was not established until 1689. I do know Richard Simpson paid his taxes in Spesutia Hundred 1692, 1694, 1695, 1699, 1700, 1701, and 1702. He died in 1711. For several of those years, the adjoining taxpayer was Thomas Gilbert Sr (spelled many ways!), who was Richard Simpson's father-in-law.

My current THEORY is that Richard Simpson and his brother William moved to old Baltimore Co soon after its formation in 1659, but they were probably still kids, so must have come with an adult. They might, maybe, sorta, coulda come from St. Mary's/Charles Co area, where there was a St. George's HUNDRED in 1663.

Love to compare notes. Please e-mail me direct at simpsonseeker@yahoo.com. Pj

My ancestor Benjamin Franklin Simpson had a brother named Larkin Simpson and another named James Madison Simpson. They were born between 1790 and 1810. Their parents were John and Arilla Osburn Simpson. The family was first established in MD in the late 17th century, then migrated to NC, SC, and eventually GA. My line moved on to Calhoun CO (originally Benton CO) in AL.

I don't know if "Larkin" was an unusual name or not. Do you guess we are connected? Yo are welcome to e-mail me at dsbennett2008@yahoo.com

Regards,
Dottie

I also have a Benjamin Franklin Simpson ancestor from GA mid 19th century, But he and his wife Ann Cash Simpson died when their children were still relatively young. They seem to have been taken in by a Rufus Cash, apparently an uncle or brother of their mother.

After reading all of the posts to this topic, I haven't seen any connections, but I thought the common name was interesting!

I don't know that I can do anything more than share in the confusion!

I also am descended from William Simpson, but through his second wife Elizabeth Hawkins or Hocking. I have, however, met a lot of people on these forums that are in your line through Averilla Perkins. It is my understanding that the Sherrills also connect to the Osburns, which circles back to the Simpsons, because William's son John Simpson married Arilla Osburn.

Trying to connect these folks is as fascinating as it is frustrating! I can say, however, that I know a lot more about my family than I did two years ago!

Nona Williams has an excellent Simpson website that you should check out if you are not already familiar with it.

Regards!
Dottie Simpson Bennett dsbennett2008@yahoo.com

Hi, Jan!

I have a lot of information I am trying to sort through and organize for ease of reference.

Here is a piece of it:
Raymond B. Simpson, born 11/17/1851 in GA, possibly near Vinings, Cobb Co. Buried in Bethel Cemetery. Parents Frank (Benjamin Franklin) and Ann Cash Simpson, both born in GA.

Raymond was brother to my great-great- grandfather Rufus Marion Simpson. He is listed in the 1830 DeKalb CO, GA census as living with Cash relatives.

Frank Simpson's father was John Simpson, married to Arilla Osburn. They moved to GA from SC. He is on the 1830 and 1840 census in DeKalb Co, GA.

Rufus was born in Coweta CO, GA.

Madison was a common name in the Cash family.

There was a Leonard Simpson in GA, who was not connected to my bunch, so far as I know.

I don't have much more than a name for Larkin, as brother to Benjamin Franklin Simpson. If you can connect any of this, let me know!

Dottie
dsbennett2008@yahoo.com

Mary Davis Simpson

I am searching for anything on my great-grandmother mary Davis Simpson born around 1872. Her Husband was Charles Simpson, and there is a bit of a mystery about her marriage and her death. My grandmother said her mother left her father around 1925 and died suddenly in 1926. My grandmother was 10 at the time, and was made a ward of the court in San Diego. Before coming to California they lived in Nebraska.

Re: Larkin Madison Simpson

Dottie,
I haven't looked at this in years. I have a couple of generations after Larkin M. and Susan Simpson. They are not in my direct lines, but I research all things Huskey. Just call me CRAZY! I would say there is probably a connection between the two, with the names so simular, but not sure. These Simpson's were in Cobb County, GA. I'll have to dig a little deeper on the family. And see if I come up with anything else. I don't have anything on Larkin Madison Simpson's ancestry.
Jan Huskey White
