Hi, it's a long shot, since you posted to the Simpson board several years ago, but I have just found my Simpson connection - I believe. Perhaps you can and will help me flesh it out.
Rev. Andrew Simson (1520, Perth, Scot - Stirling, Scot)
+ Violet Adamson
Patrick Simson (ca 1556, Perth, Scot - 1618, Stirling, Scot)
+ Martha Baron
Lilias Simson (ca 1580 - )
+ Rev. John Gillespie (1580 - 1627)
Capt. John Gillespie
Rev. George Gillespie
Patrick Gillespie
William Gillespie
Janet Gillespie
Lilias Gillespie
Christain Gillespie
Mary Gillespie
poss. Archibald Gillespie.
Janet Gillespie
+ Rev. William Bertram

I have seen secondary sources, perhaps not so reliable, that say Janet was the sister of Rev. George Gillespie (1644, Stirling, Scot - 1722, Cecil Co., MD) minister at Christiana Presby. Church, Delaware, and I know the Gillespies and Simsons were interrelated. Do you have anything on Janet or before? I have her children to the present.
Thanks,
Ginny Oswald

SIMSONs with Silvander in their name

Looking for any SIMSON descendents who have Silvander as a christian, middle or surname in their tree.

James SIMSON married Honour ROACH in Plymouth, UK, in 1772 and same year had George Silvander SIMSON. They moved to Portsmouth, UK where they had Honour Roach (1774) and Joseph (1777). Then I lose track of them.

In 1802, another James SIMSON (shipwright, widower) married Mary Ann SULLIVAN in Plymouth and had Silvia SIMSON in 1805 and Silvander SIMSON in 1807 (deceased) and 1810 (survived - and possibly known as Samuel).

Silva/nder seemed to be an important name to someone - but who and why?

Hey Allison. We are more than likely descended from the same Simson line since medieval families didn't move around too much. But my Simson line only goes as far as Lilias Simson/Symeson who was born in 1590. From there I lost track of the male descendants. I'll look for more information on this family though and tell you if I find any direct links between us. I'll be in touch. Thanks for your reply.

Terra Tracy

There was a relative with them named Isidor who was VP of the Scheftels & Simson Co. James disappeared, leaving a wife and son. He was a pharmacist and was born about 1900 in Scotland. I am most interested in locating any information on him. Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you.

You're absolutely right. This family most definitely was Jewish. Sometimes Jewish records can be found among church records. The LDS also sometimes has microfilm of Jewish records. One of the best sources of information, if they can be found is circumcision records. However, these are hard to find.
Anyway, compounding this problem is the likelihood that Simson is a patronym and it is not unlikely that he had siblings or cousins that chose a different surname. Jews weren't required to have surnames in Hesse-Darmstadt until around 1812, at the time he was born. So, I would surmise that his father or grandfather was most definitely named Simson or Samson or maybe even Simon. That means that I need to be aware of all of these surnames and perhaps Simonsohn as well.

Most of the surnames you provide strongly suggest that your ancestors were Jewish [e.g., Blum, Adler, Cohen, etc.] Finding records on people of Jewish extraction can be difficult since they weren't in the mainstream of German society. No baptismal records would exist, obviously; they almost always lived outside of Gentile towns in small villages called "shtetls". So they rarely left conventional records by which Gentiles could be tracked.

John-my connection to the Simsons goes back to the old days in Tonawanda and unfortunately my mother-Rita Brenon Ward-the last of her generation-died last June-so I will have to research my records to try to help you. Give me a couple weeks though as I am all tied up in the Co Exec election for awhile. You might try Vern Fish on this board in the meantime-I believe his wife is related to the Simsons. Tonawanda is up the road from me here in Eggertsville, sort of my second home, and I have a lot of relatives there chiefly on the Brenon line. Dan. 837-1170.

Hi, I am a native of Tonawanda, NY. I am interested in learning more about a John Simson who ran a music store in Tonawanda circa 1930 - 40. He had a grandson named Harold. His wife, nee Deere I believe, was a well known piano teacher in town. Is he in your line? Tonawanda was and is small, and the relatively unusual spelling of the surname suggests that he is. Regards, John

Hi Barbara..

I just received a 'snail-mail' letter from Vern Fisher yesterday as he was not able to contact me at my old addy. I have moved to Southern CA. You can email me here. I have stored all my genealogy data for now, but would love to hear from you. I am limited on computer use, as I'm having to use my step-dad's, but will try to respond when possible.

BTW..my mother remembers your grandfather, Les BELL. They use to play together as children. Her name is Doryce BARTON Mead Weed and she is 85 this month.

Thanks for the note, Vern..

Sharon

I have relatives with the SIMSON surname from Scotland also, but I only know of them up until 1655. My ancestor is John Simson, born in Scotland in 1655. He marrried a Mary before 1680. I was wondering if you know of his ancestors. Maybe we are related!

He married Manerva( Potter?) and they had
4 children Albert, Ann or Anna,Clora and Hattie (Harriet).
Harriet is my ggrandmother. She married William Risley and they had 1 daughter Clora. Clora married Peter Belitz.
They seem to come from Philidelphia, but mainly Ohio. All the children were born there. What do you think? Any possible connections? I have alot of old photos, one which which is identified as Clarissa Cook.

Our Joel M. SIMSON was born much earlier, in 1807 and his wife was Anna Elizabet St. John. He had 3 children, Delos b 1836, Addie, b 1841 and Hattie b 1847. It is interesting that you have another Joel M. SIMSON. Is it possible that yours came down thru John SIMSON, born 1758 in Ireland ? He died in Springfield, NY in 1826. There likely is a connection somewhere.
Verne
