I tried to send you a private email but got it back. Your second "batch" Sines are my ancestors. According to a descendant of Henry and Amanda's daughter. Amanda's Married name was Neff before she married Henry?? It was spelled kneff in the 1850 census Columbia County, WI. Amanda, Henry and their daug. was living with Amanda's son from her first marriage. I can't go into much more right now. My husband's brother has hours to live--cancer. My husband has colon cancer that has spread to his pancreas. A very bad time for all of us. Thanks for trying to help me

Novalee, I don't know if we are related for sure or not.
If any of my info is right I don't think we are.???
Not that I would care, There's always room for a "new" cousin or two!! LOL
If you read the latest post from Kathleen, My family is from the second "batch" Sines'.
I do know that my grandpa Sines was a son of Henry Sines who was married to Elizabeth Brown. Several of Henry's siblings descendants have done extensive research of the family. These multiple Henry Sines' makes it very confusing. Records are so incomplete or non existent. All I want to see if there was proof in writing somewhere that my great grandfather was the son of Henry Sines 1777?75 or not. Not for me but for a distant cousin who needs to know for DAR. Thank You.

Hi there,
I'm afraid you have your early Sines families a bit jumbled...which is extremely easy to do.
.
The confusion for Sines trackers arrises from the fact that there were actually three closely related Sines families living in what is now Preston Co. WV in the early 1800s.
While we're still not sure if or how the three husbands were related, we know that their Wolfe wives were.
====
(1) "Major" Henry Sines was married to Louise Clara Wolfe, d/o John Jacob Wolfe & Eva Christina Wetzel
They moved their large family over to Garrett Co. MD about 1820, settling in the Sang Run area. He was the Henry Sines who died there in 1842. (This is my husband's line)
.
(2) Henry Sines was married 1st to Elizabeth Wolfe, sister of Louise Clara Wolfe Sines. They moved theur large family to Muskingum Co. Ohio abt. 1816-1818. They divorced in 1842 and Henry married his 2nd wife Amanda A. (Alderich) Knell in 1843 Indiana.
BTW Jacob Sines s/o Major Henry & Clara, married his 1st cousin Mary "Polly" Sines, d/o Hnery & Elizabeth
.
(3) John Henry Sines was married to Abigail Elizabeth Wolfe, d/o George Jacob Wolfe & Nancy Isabella Cameron. George Jacob was the brother of John Jacob Wolfe, thus Abigail was a 1st cousin to Elizabeth & Clara Wolfe. This is the couple that remained in Preston Co. WV.
.

Bye for now,
Kathleen

Hi Barbara. Hello Dan.
Barbara, I believe you and I have emailed each other before a couple of years ago. My husband is a descendant of Isaac and Clarissa Sines. In fact I have information for seven generations after Isaac. Isaac and Clarissa had one son, George Henry Sines who married a Nellie Palmer and had a son, Guerdon Henry Sines and daughter, Edith Sines. Guerdon Henry had two wives. The first wife, Mellie Smith died along with their infant son, Carl perished because of a kitchen fire. Hazel the daughter survived. Guerdon Henry married again to Zoe Blanche Hyatt and had a son Bernard Sterling Sines (my husband's father) who was married 3 times. My husband's half brother (18 years older) and his wife are expecting their 4th great-grandchild right this moment. We are in touch with descendants of Hazel. However, we have no information on Edith other than the fact she married a Lewis T. Smith and had a daughter named Vivian born in 1903. Early census showed that Nellie Palmer lived with Edith and Lewis after George Henry died.
I would love to be able to find descendants of Edith but I am short on time. My husband and I are still working (got to pay for college expenses).
I wish you and your families well. Please let me know if you find any new information.
I have lost my emails from when we were corresponding because of a computer failure. Your Sines married into the Moon family, right?
Regards, Bea Sines

I think you are definitely on the right track. I don't know how to prove any of it though. I mean, JOHN and MARY? Geez, how many of those must there be??

Good thought on the Howard/Harvey connection. However, I did notice a Harvey Sines, grown, and with a wife in Bucks Co PA around 1900, so don't know for sure. He was born around the same time as our Howard.

My only guess on why Howard didn't get land from Rachel's estate is that he was already in Delaware. Maybe they couldn't find him, or he wasn't interested since he didn't live in PA anymore.

Any other Sines researchers still checking this thread?

Laurie (laurie3858@cox.net)
Danny,
I have been working on genealogy for over 30 years. Howard Thomas Sines is one of the ones I have been stuck on for a long time. I have 28 of 32 of my Great Great Great Grandparents figured out. According to Howard's death certificate in Wilmington, Delaware his father was John Sines of Doylestown. Several of us have been plugging along for years trying to track down this John. His wife is one of my missing 4.
What I am trying to do is start in the beginning with Peter and work down through the 19th century and try and gather as much information as I can on this family. I have used several of your emails as starting points. Luckily a lot of church records survived so we do have some source records.
I know how people jump from one project to another. I am as guilty as the next guy. If you are up to it I would like to see if you have made any changes on the children of Peter and Barbara Seyn/Sein/Sayn/etc. The last list I found showed 10 possible children or at least people with that surname in the area. You can email me at AJWEYER@aol.com if you are interested. Either way when I come across one of your emails I will send you any new information I come up with. I live 3 hours away and all of a sudden find myself with a lot of time on my hands so I am hoping to find that 29th GGG grandparent. Thanks for answering.
Andy

Thanks Andy, I have not been able to conduct very much research on the Sines of PA/NJ but I continue to plug away in fits, stops and starts. Here is an email from another researcher that leads me to believe we are on the right track. The dates don't exactly match but I have learned this is not a large concern as long as the dates are close. I have looked at primary documents filled out by the person giving the info and sometimes their birth date changes from one document to the next. WWI draft registrations many times differ by one year compared to later documents. danny

Danny,
The Israel Sine that I am researching was born May 26, 1840 in Bucks Co., PA. He served in the Civil War in CO.E. 104 Reg.of PA. His father was William Sine b.Dec.5, 1797 and d. Aug. 3, 1887. William and his wife Sarah Ambers Sine are buried in Plumsteadville Cemetery, Keller's Church Road in Plumsteadville, PA. While in the Doylestown, PA area researching the Sines, I stopped by the cemetery to see their gravesite. I believe that William's father and mother were Georg Seyn and Margaret Wort. I am interested in when they may have immigrated from Germany. I noticed that you have done some research into this immigration. I would appreciate any pointers in this area. Thanks, Janice

Wm. & Geo. Sines, c 1797 Bucks, PA

William Sines was born on 5 Dec 1797 in Bucks county PA according to the Nockamixon church records. I place this William in the family of Johann "George" Sines and Margaret Wirt.

I fail to find a William Sines in the census records of Bucks, Montgomery or Philadelphia counties PA in the 1850 census with a birth year near 1797. However I do find in the 1850 census records for Bucks a George Sines, 52, with wife, Sarah, 51, and children Israel, 8, and Elizabeth, 6. This George and Sarah disappear in the subsequent census records of 1860, 1870 and 1880.

A William Sines now appears with wife Sarah and daughter Elizabeth all of near correct age to be the same as the George, Sarah and Elizabeth of the 1850 census.

I submit based on the records that George Sines in the 1850 census is the same person as William Sines in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses. I also theorize his name was most lilely George William Sines.

Note: I have simplified the surname to Sines to signify all the various spellings.
Am seeking information about the parents of both Philip Sines b Clifton Park, Saratoga Co., NY and of his wife, Priscilla Bangs, b 1787. Her father was Lemuel (or Lumuel) Bangs who is mentioned in the history of Stamford, Delaware Co., NY. I believe that Philip's father may have been Peter Sines.
Any information about these two families would be greatly appreciated.
Barbara

Re: Howard Sines b ca 1836 PA with son Howard G. Sines b ca 1859

Last Friday I made a trip to Doylestown to see what information could be found on the parentage of Howard Thomas Sines. I found something that will help. In the Doylestown Democrat newspaper there is the following entry ..."on 7 May 1860 Mrs. Lizzie Gilbert Sines 22 died in Philadelphia of typhoid fever. She was the wife of Howard"...
In my research at Bucks County I noticed that the Sines name evolved over the years. It looks like originally it was Seyn, then Sine and later Sines. Numerous other spelling were found, the most frequent mispelling was Sayn and Sign. That has led me to another interesting piece of information which will take a little explanation of how I got there. We have traced John Sines of Bucks County in the censuses.
In the 1850 census of Buckingham Township there are 8 Sine/Sines. John Sines household (household number 511) consisted of John 50, Mary 43, William 7, Lewellyn 3, Mary Elizabeth 1 and Catharine 24. The two other Sines in Buckingham County at this time, Harvey Sine, aged 12, living with John Good in household number 338 and Sarah Ann Sines, 18 years old living in the household of M. Jones Bodine, household number 518 which is very close to John Sines.
In the 1860 census of Buckingham Township again there are 8 Sine/Sines. John Sines household (household number 75) consisted of John 57, Mary 54, William 17, Lewellyn 11, Mary 9. There are three other Sines in Buckingham township. Harvey Sine aged 21 and Annie Sine aged 19 both working on the farm of John Fell, household number 85, again close to John. There was also a Rachel Sines aged 19 working as a domestic in the household of Henry Watson, household number 136.
In the 1870 Census of Buckingham Township there are 9 Sine/Sines. John Sines household (household number 243) consisted of John 67, Mary 64 and Howard G. aged 11. Next door was his son William who's household consisted of William 27, Rebecca 22, Harvey H. 3 and Joseph C. 2. The two others are Anna B. Sines 28 working as a domestic for David Fell, household number 273 and Jenny Sines enumerated with Joseph and Mary Fryling in household number 152. Note: There was a 12 year old Rebecca Fryling in the 1860 census enumerated with Joseph and Mary Fryling in Buckingham Township.
In the 1880 census there are only 6 Sine/Sines in Buckingham Township. Anna B. Sine 38 still working for David Fell. William 38, Rebecca 32, Harvey H. 13 and Joseph C. 12. Lastly Jennie Sines was living at her grandmother's who was Mary Fryling.
My theory is that all of these people listed in Buckingham Township are children or grandchildren of John and Mary. That is Catharine born 1826, Sarah born 1832, Harvey born 1838, Rachel born 1841, Annie born 1842, William born 1843, Lewellyn born 1847 and Mary Elizabeth born 1849. Now all it takes is proving it.
The 1840 census entry of Plumstead Township that we believe is John lists three daughters and 1 son. As shown above we have two daughters and one son born before 1840. We have no proof that Catharine is a daughter she could just as easily be John's niece. One of the three daughters was born between 1830 and 1835 which means she could have been married before the 1850 census.
The only child missing in the 1850 census was Rachel who should have been 8.
The children missing in 1860 were Catharine and Sarah Ann who were probably married.
Three more children show up missing in 1870: Harvey, Lewellyn and Mary Eliabeth. All old enough to be married and out of the household.
What has brought me to this point is a Philadelphia death record. Rachel B. Sines born 4 Jul 1839 in Bucks County and died 3 Sep 1907 in Philadelphia. Her parents were John Sines and Mary Bowden. A search of intestate records found that a Rachel Sines who died 3 Sep 1907 had property that was distributed amongst her heirs. Being she was never married it was divided between two brothers and two sisters. William F. Sines, Wife Rebecca of Buckingham Township, Llewellyns Sines and wife Clara of Lambertsville, New Jersey, Sarah Lear, widow of Buckingham Township and Mary Gaylord widow who lived in Philadelphia.
The property that was probated was 2 acres of land sold Rachel for $1 by Mary Sines on 2 April 1880. Which is the same property that was bought by Mary Sines, wife of John, on 2 April 1860 from Joseph Campbell.

question #1: Does that mean Mary's maiden name was Bowden?

question #2: If Howard is a sister of Rachel how come he didn't get a piece of the property?

question #3: There has been extensive research trying to find a Howard Sines in the the 1850 and 1860 censuses with no results. Could this Harvey Sine born in 1838 actually be our Howard Sines born in 1838?

I am going back to Doylestown this Friday for more research. I would like to know your opinion of what I have so far.

Hi there,
You said:
"...I'm looking for death certificates for John Sines 1851 -1897 Williams, Ohio...."
.
You're talking about John Sines s/o Simon Sines & Rebecca Bishop, right?
I don't have a copy of John's death record yet, until you posted I didn't even have a death year for him, just a birth date: Apr.07.1851.
Where did you get this death year? Do you know WHERE he died?
.
O.K., first I should tell you....the STATE of Ohio did not begin issuing CERTIFICATES for deaths until December 20, 1908, so you can't get a pre-1908 Ohio "death certificate".
.
However...
Ohio did make it a law to record deaths in 1867, so COUNTY probate courts did keep death RECORDS between 1867 and December 19, 1908. So, if a death was recorded in a Ohio county AND that record still exists...(wasn't lost to some mishap) you could get a copy of a pre-1908 death record.
.
I live in Ohio and pre-1957 STATE (& some early county) death records are kept at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus.
I can tell you this much though; if John died in Williams Co. in 1897 you can forget about contacting the OHS for his record.
You will have to contact the probate court in Williams Co. instead because
a) there simply isn't a statewide index to death records from 1867 through December 19, 1908.
b) While the OHS does hold copies of some early COUNTY death records, it doesn't have any for Williams Co..... yet.
.
If you think John died in Williams Co, you can write to:
.
WILLIAMS County Probate Court
1 Courthouse Square
Bryan, Ohio
43506-0000
or call:
(419) 636-2059
.
Bye for now,
Kathleen

Old Sines Cemetery, Upshur Co., WV

Hi there,
While in WV recently, I visited the abandoned "Old Sines Cemetery". It is located deep into the woods on what was former Sines land near Goshen, in the Banks District of Upshur Co. This particular area has gone back to wild since last timbered some 50 years ago. Bears and rattlesnakes are common among the local wildlife of these woods. Many cell phones will not receive service here for 911 situations. .
This very isolated cemetery can only be reached by foot, mule or ATV the last mile or so, via a rough, narrow steep trail.
Though there is a single wire "fence" enclosing it, the site is usually covered with tall ferns so spotting it and the headstones can be difficult, even using GPS coordinates. Only someone familair with the trails around Goshen and the location of this cemetery should serve as a guide.
.
The cemetery consists of at least 14 unmarked graves and 5 marked graves situated roughly on top of a ridge.
.
The 5 marked headstones are for:
1) John W. Daff/Daft, b:1837 d:1901, s/o Margaret Showalter & Jacob Daft
2) Boyd Daff, b:1897 d:1898 s/o Lottie E. Lee & Syrus J. Daff
3) Alice L. (Gregory) Sines, b:1861 d:1897, d/o Sarah J. Harris & Wyett Gregory
4) Delia Bell Sines, b:1893 d:1895 d/o Alice L. Gregory & Franklin A. Sines
5) Mahala A. Gregory, b:1895 d:1895 d/o Anna E. Friend & David H. Gregory
.
I have attached a drawing of the cemetery's layout and photos of the headstones below.
Bye for now,
Kathleen

They surely moved on to other churches by the 1800's. Seyn was a surname found at the Tohickon in the mid-to late 1700's. My maiden name was Wirt.

Yes, I am talking about the John Sines (Son of Simon and Rebecca) Bd 7 April 1851 in Pulaski, Wms Co, Ohio and dd 1 Feb 1897 in (after I rechecked) Ithaca, Gratiot, Michigan.

My information came from a cousin in Indiana who has Hazel Belle's (daughter of John Sines} papers. She says she has the Death Certificate and he died of Pneumonia. I don't have it. I have tried Michigan with no luck, I will try MI again.
Nancy Sines Schultz posted a lot of good information on this family (She shows John's death in Washington, Defiance, Ohio)so I tried to find her to possibly get a photo of John and/or Death record from Ohio.

Thanks and sorry Dolores

P.S. I do have information on Rebecca Bishop from a descendent of Rebecca McCafferty in West Unity, Ohio who does not use the internet. She says Rebecca's last name was Molton. Any possibility?
Hi,
I have a Henry Sines b ca 1787 with a spouse of Susannah b ca 1791 Susannah died in Endicott, Jefferson, NE on 11 Dec 1876. That is the only data I have on this Henry Sines. Do you have the parents of your Henry Sines? Would the Henry Sines b ca 1825 in Blakesie, Williams, OH who married Catherine Warner ca 1845 be the son of your Henry Sines?
Do you have all the children of Henry Sines and Susannah? Any additional information would be most helpful as I have 27 Henry Sines in the 1800's that I am trying to trace.

Well I had that one completely wrong. From the 1925 Iowa Census of Mystic, Appanoose, IA:
George Sines' father is Alva Sines born in PA and his mother is Sarah McNamara b in IA
Dora Sines' father is George Turney b OH and her mother is Martha Rotramle

The Alva Sines MIGHT be Alva Garrison Sines 1849-1929

Here is a note I have from one of the message boards:
Re: Sine(s) research in NJ and PA
Author: chuck sine
Date: 18 Feb 2005 3:46 AM GMT
In Reply to: Sine(s) research in NJ and PA by: Daniel Haynes
Hello,
My Sine/s where from Greene County Pa. around Jolleytown. I have John R. Sines I have three birth dates for him 1798,1807,and 1810. He married Delilah Bland ard 1846. He dies in abt 1895. I think this John R Sines was married before Delilah but this is my thoughts. John is 36 if he is born in 1810 this birth date comes from Bland researchers. I think thats a long time to marry for the first time. According to a book written by Annie Mack called The Mack and Sine Families. There is a little section about John and a sister named Lavina it gives them being born in 1798 they may be tiwns. Also gives Johns parents as John William Sines and Lavina Pethtel. My grt aunt gave this info to this book. I do have a copy of this page. Also my aunt said that we may have been called Siner at one time. But there is no connection to the Sines in this book. So now I am back in center field. John and Delilah had six childern.
1. Ezra Doty Sines 1847-1903 went to Iowa and Kansas
2. Alva Garrison Sines 1849-1929 went to Iowa
3. Goerge Hennen Sines 1851-1914 stayed in Wetzel Co. WVa.
4. Barney Ray Sines 1855-1920 stay in Wetzel Co. WVa.
5. Phillip Shough Sines 1858-1926 went Glendora Ca.
6. Elise Jane Sines/Prentice 1862-1911 Wetzel Co WVa.
I do have lists of wives and some childern for all six childern. Ezra,Alva, and Phillip keep the s on Sines and George and Barney droped it. My aunt has Johns father as John William Sines born 1740 he would have been 70 when he had John R. . I also have been told John William Sines/r was born 1762 died abt 1835 around Greene or Washington Co. Pa. and his father was John William born 1740. The only other two Sines that I found living in Greene Co. Pa. in different times was William that married Margaret Christy and a Adam Sine. These two may be related to my John R.. William was there in 1810 and Adam in 1820. Then John R. is there in 1850 till 1870 when he moves to Wetzel Co. WVa.. And from 1850 back to 1810 I can't find my John R.. I hope I did'nt confuse you. Please feel free to ask me anything and I will share all that I have.
Chuck Sine
Note: 27 Jul 08 by deh Ezra Doty Sines marries Julia Batterson 20 Aug 1878 in Iowa. Aother source has a second marriage for Ezra Doty Sines to a Mary Rose Curtice on 12 Oct 1879 in Plano, IA. But I think the Mary Curtice marriage NEVER happened to this Ezra Sines.

I"m NOT 100% certain, i appears your George Sines is the son of Samuel G. Sines 1838-1914 and Jemima Jane Alward. Samuel Sines was born in OH but his father was from PA, Joseph Sines 1799-1878. I will do some more checking to see if I have anything to nail this down. dannyhaynes
