Here is some more Sipple information that Delaware researchers may not have come across:

Gloucester County, New Jersey Orphan's Court Minutes Vol. A, June Term 1787 [FHL US/CAN Film 847005]:

In one minute Martinus Sipple, is referred to as administrator of estate of Nathanial Sipple, late of Township of Galloway in County of Gloucester,.

Another Minute titled "Petition of Thomas Chamberlain for letters of guardianship for 7 minor children of Nathanial Sipple, deceased" states:

Thomas Chamberlain grandfather of Thomas Sipple, Waitman Sipple, Richard Sipple, Sarah Sipple, Nathanial Sipple, Garrett Sipple, Rebecca Sipple, minors under the age of 14 years, petitioned that Martinus Sipple, uncle of the said minors, might be appointed guardian of said orphans till they attain 14 years of age, the said Martinus being nearest of kin.

Signed by Thomas Chamberlain by X mark.

Martinus Sipple consented to being appointed.

[end Orphan's Court record]

Apparently Nathaniel & Martinius Sipple were sons of John Sipple of Kent County Delaware. "John Sipple made his will 30 Oct 1752; it was probated 16 Dec 1752. In it he mentioned his wife Prudence; sons Martinus, Nathaniel, Uriah, John, and William; daughters Rachel, Sarah, and Joanna; Sarah Millally. His executors were Prudence and his sons William and John; witnesses were Mark Smith, John Clother, and James Berry."
Hi... Do you still have the Sippel photograph??
My Sippel's lived in Darke County, Ohio from around 1840 on... with my Great-Grandfather moving to Nebraska around 1870 or so.
I would have no way of knowing if your photo was actually my family unless there is a family resemblance. I do have a couple of old photos with people I don't know in them... It would be so cool... wonderful... if this were my family.
I always hate when I see old photos in antique shops... knowing how I would love to have one of my family.
Could you scan it & e-mail the scan to me??

goyorkjodi@hotmail.com

Thanks...
Sippel photograph

Hi,

I found an old photograph at an antique shop. It was taken at Chas. F. Lee photographer's, Elyria, Ohio. On the back of the photo is written, "Grandpa Sippel" The man in the photo appears elderly, and the picture may have been taken in the late 1800's. I did a little research of the Sippel/Sipple name on the web, and found a number of Sippels buried in Cleveland St. Cemetery in Amherst Township, Lorain Co., Ohio. If this is your family, Please let me know and I will return the photo to you.

Sara

Waitman Sipple/Phillip Barratt

Perhaps someone out there can clear up this question. While researching Waitman Sipple (ABT 1702 - 1762) I ran across a State of Delaware website which stated "Barratt's Chapel, known as the 'Cradle of Methodism', was built in 1780 by Phillip Barratt and his father-in-law, Waitman Sipple". Yes, Phillip Barratt married Waitman's daughter Meriam, but Waitman was deceased by 1780, as his will was probated in 1762. They can't mean the grandfather Waitman as he died in 1772. Meriam had a brother named Waitman - do they mean Phillip's brother-in-law Waitman? Or does this simply mean financially and not physically? Just curious - thanks.

Thank you so much for your reply. Your explanation is very clear and it now makes sense! However, in the meantime, I have stumbled across something else.while researching the John Caldwell family. At www.accessible.com/amcnty/DE/Delaware/delaware62.htm there is information on Henry Newell. "...five daughters,...Mary Barratt, born 1766, was the wife of Judge Barratt, who gave the ground to the "Wesleyan Methodists" for the erection thereon of "Barratt's Chapel". It goes on to state that his daughter Ann Newell married Elias Sipple.

So now I am confused again in regard to the chapel - was Mariam/Mary's maiden name Newell or Sipple - was this the Mariam Sipple who married Philip Barratt, or is the Judge Barratt referred to not Philip Barratt?

Thanks for your help!

Not sure if we connect but there is a distinct possibility that Harry's wife Elizabeth remarried(??? Lucas???) because he died when Elizabeth would have been 42. The children of Harry and Elizabeth were: Harry A, Kenneth, Richard, James B and Tonya Jean.

Harry M was born to Alice Birdie Baker and James Sipple in 1900 in Indiana.
Grandfather is John W. Sipple (deceased 1979)

My name is Michael Scott Sipple. I was born on October 23rd, 1970 in Battle Creek, Michigan. I am trying to find my family line, and have not found anything that definitively links other Sipples to my line yet. My grandfather was John W. (Wilbur???) Sipple. I believe he was born in Virginia on September 14th, 1920. He died in July of 1979 in Hillsdale, Michigan. His wife's (my grandmother's) name was Louise (of Italian decent). His son John Michael Sipple (my father), was born Dec. 29th, 1943 in Virginia. My dad had an older brother, Patsy Joe Sipple, who died in 2001 in Michigan. Patsy Joe's kids are Pat, and Jeanette, who married a John Rose I believe in the 70s or 80s. They have sons. Dorothy BoBo is my mother. Most of her side of the family are from Michigan, but now reside in Arizona and California. If anyone could help me trace the Sipple line, I would REALLY appreciate it, as I have wanted to know more about my roots my entire life. Please email me at: mackho88@yahoo.com. Thank you!

I am also researching James H. Sipple who shares the same death date as his brother John. James and his wife Elizabeth Baker had 3 children: Albert, b. about 1856, Alice, b. April 22, 1859, and Dekalb, b. abt. 1860. Alice was my husband's great grandmother, and married John Vinson. They lived in Lincoln county, KY. I think James H. and Elizabeth died young, because I find Alice living with a Johnson family in 1870 at age 13. Have you found any other info on James' death date? I would like to learn more about this family. My father in law remembers his grandmother having a brother "Dee", but I cannot find out any more information on Dekalb anywhere. It would be unusual for two brothers to die on the same day, but it is possible, as it happened to my grandfather and his brother.

SIPPLE and HERMAN Germans from Russia

I am researching the above surname which I just found is the surname of my Grandfather Frederich HERMAN's mother. My Grandfather was born to George HERMAN and Catherina SIPPLE in Frank, Saratov Russia October 5, 1891. For years I had the wrong mother's surname. A funeral record of Frederich's brother George which I received today verifies the names of the parents as listed above. They were Germans who went to Russia.

Here is all I have:

HERMAN, Johann Georg b: December 16, 1864 in Hussenbach- Linevo Osero, Saratov, Volga, Russia

. +SIPPLE, Catherine b: Abt. 1864 in Hussenbach, Linevo Osero, Saratof, Volga, Russia m: Abt. 1882 in Frank, Russia

......... 2 HERMAN, Johann George b: March 05, 1883 in Hussenbach- Linevo Osero, Saratov, Volga, Russia d: October 14, 1940 in Greeley, Weld County, Colorado
............. +PAUL, Charlotte "Lottie" b: January 25, 1887 in Micheldorf, Russia m: February 06, 1905 in St. Johns Lutheran Church, Windsor, Colorado Father: PAUL, John
Curtis Sipple

I am searching for any information on Curtis Sipple born about 1901. He was executed by electrocution by the State of Pennslyvania on Oct. 30, 1922. I beleive he was born in Pennsylvania, and that he was arrested in Kentucky. His father may have been my great grandfather. His father had went to Ky after some kind of trouble and started a new life and changed his name to John Lucas. From what I have heard, Curtis was there working at the time of his arrest. His half-brother was my grandfather. Any information about Curtis Sipple or his family would be appreciated, or any one who knows where I might find out about his crime and execution.
Thank you.

Don't
want to post the name as I am unsure if this
person is still alive. Mary Devine had a son
Thomas who married a Carrie. Mary was born
after 1860. Have you run across a Devine in
your Sipple family? My family was from the
Scranton area. Thanks.
Wendy

I am searching for a Sipple family but have very little info to go on. This is what I know for sure right now. My great grandfather was named Sipple, but at some point he changed his name from Sipple to Lucas, which was his mother's maiden name, and moved from Pennslyvania to Kentucky. He was married and possibly divorced before this change and had possibly 2 sons, one may have been named Curtis. He remarried in KY. and had another family. I have hit a wall trying to put this all together and would appreciate any info you could give me, no matter how small.

LeVan:
John W. Sipple was executed November 7, 1864 in Bloomfield, KY along with my ancestor Joseph Hopkins and Samuel Stagdale, on orders of Stephen Burbridge, Union Military Commander of Kentucky during the Civil War, and still probably Kentucky's most despised figure. Sipple, Hopkins, and Stagdale were among around sixty regular Confederate soldiers who were executed while prisoners by Burbridge, whose excesses caused Lincoln to eventually remove him from office.

John: There were eight men on the order of November 5, but only one Sipple among them, which was John. Only three were executed, including John, because they were allowed to draw beans out of a hat to select only three. General Burbridge apparently thought this practice would cause dissention among the prisoners, but it put the state of Kentucky into a near situation of revolt. Lincoln finally removed Burbridge when he learned of the practice, which killed over 50 regular Confederate soldiers. I do not believe there was another Sipple among them, so if the brothers shared a death date, I suspect one was killed in action or died of disease. Hope this helps.

MISSING GARRETT SIPPLE GENERATION?

There appears to be two Garrett Sipples in Delaware, one ca. 1600s, the other ca. 1700s. And it seems they are related, but how?

Garrett, ca. 1600: born abt. 1650 Ireland (or Wales) and immigrated as an indentured servant in 1667 to Accomack County, VA then on to Kent County, Delaware where he married Mary Calvert, lived in Mispillion Hundred, and they had sons Waitman (1673), Christopher (abt 1680), Garrett, Jr (bef 1682), John "the elder" (abt. 1682, no known daughters.

Garrett, ca. 1700: married to "Elizabeth", daughters Sarah (1764), Lydia (1771), Elizabeth (1776); sons Thomas (1765), Waitman & James - twins (1768), John (1779). This family resided in Murderkill Hundred in Kent County, DE.

Because of the repetivenss of the names, there almost certainly has to be a link between these two families. At first glance, one might think that Garrett (ca. 1700s) was the son of Garrett (ca. 1600s), but if the above dates are correct, Garrett, Jr (s/o Garrett in Mispillion) was born before 1682. Garrett of Murderkill had children between 1764 and 1779, meaning he would have to been between the ages of 83 and 98, or older, when the children were born. Not impossible, but certainly unlikely.

There seems to be a missing Garrett Sipple generation between Garrett of Mispillion and Garret of Murderkill. DOES ANYONE HAVE INFO ON THAT GENERATION?
His parents and brothers and sisters settled in FDL Co. WI. Later his sister, Sabina, her husband, Adam Borns, and their children Ferdinand and Helen Lee moved from Mt. Calvary WI to Grand Rapids also. Vincent married Magdalena Weber and they had eight children. Anna Sippel was born on 22 June 1867. Mary Magdalene (1 Apr. 1869) married Frank Koch. Their children were Leona, George, and Emily. Anna Margaret (17 Mar 1871) married Michael William Peters. John Adam (3 Sept 1873) married Eleanor Moore. Their son was Austin. Austin had one daughter, Barbara, who married n. Carbone. Lucy Amalia (11 Dec 1875) married Anthony Hammerschmidt. Francis Peter (15 Mar 1878) married Mary Cowell. They had twins, Ethel and Vincent. Joseph Vincent was born on 12 Nov 1879. Josephine (30 July 1881) married Mason C. Hall. They had two sons, Norman V. Hall and Roy F. Hall. Please contact me if you are descendants of any of these families. I can share information about your Wisconsin relatives and your German roots.
