Classification: Query
Surnames: Sitters, Holmes, Howell, Levis, Warrier
November 8, 1786:
Whereas I the subscriber (wife of John Warrier, of Upper Darby, in the county of Chester) was on the 21st of October, 1786, accused before Isaac Howell, Esq., of the city of Philadelphia, with stealing several pails of butter from the house of Adam Sitters, Inn-keeper, in Strawberry Alley, Philadelphia, did call myself Elizabeth Holmes, the wife Abraham Holmes, of Springfield township, Chester County, to the great injury to her Character and Reputation. Now in order to clear Elizabeth Holmes from the infamy of my wicked conduct, I, Elizabeth Warrier, do publicly declare that I did assume her name in order to extricate myself, and have the charge against me made up. And for the deception which I have imposed on the public in the above instance and the apersion of her character, I do publicly condemn, and punish to the world.
Witness my hand.
Elizabeth Warrier
Chester County, ss.

The above declaration was read to Elizabeth Warrier, and acknowledged by her to be the truth, which she signed before me, Thomas Levis, Esq., one of the Justices of the Peace for Chester County, the 31st day of October, 1786.
Thomas Levis

I am not related to this family, I am just passing on this information, which comes from a book titled "Runaway Women, Elopements And Other Miscreant Deeds, As Advertised In The Pennsylvania Gazette - 1728 -1789. (together with a few abused wives and unfortunate children)." Compiled by Judith Ann Highley Meier. Published by Closson Press. 1993. Page 90.
