I notice there is no documentation that William and Martha came from Northumberland. The Whitaker family was not from Northumberland but Lancashire and London.

Perhaps you could also explain why ''THE “ANCIENT” INDIAN ANCESTRY '' has published these two statements below that clearly appear to be in conflict with what you have posted from 1996? The earliest appearance is Martha's deposition and it would appear also that she clearly was here before William?

The fact that Martha Sizemore was living at the home of Alexander Whitaker and likely was taking care of Pocahontas seems to me to be a very important piece of the Sizemore history -- why is it left out of their 'Indian history'?

''The genealogical research shows the earliest appearance of the surname in Virginia is WILLIAM SISMORE who came to VA from England and received 100 acres of land "Upon Appomattox River" in the first division of land in 1619.5 ''

''No record of a maiden name has been found for Martha. I believe she arrived later than William. It is assumed they were married which most likely occurred in Virginia. She may have been among the women that were transported from England, starting in 1619''
http://www.sizemorednaproject.com/history_surname.html

Joanne

Spring Issue-March 1996 Vol.1, No.1
Seeking Sizemore
A newsletter dedicated to the pursuit of the Sizemore name.
Dawn Watt Westfall, Editor

Pp. 8-9
Early Sizemore Chronology
by Joy King

Info from Raymond M. Sizemore- 102 N. Postville Dr. #8- Lincoln, IL 62656-1073 Aug. 1992 [hereinafter cited R.S.]
Wm. & Martha came from Northumberland, England as did Reverend Whitaker, Martha was his housekeeper. Martha herself was from London. They were one of the first families known in the colonies, the land was near Richmond, VA.

March 1611
Conway Whittle Sams, The Conquest of Virginia The Third Attempt, p.210- Then came the Rev. Alexander Whitaker, who sailed with Sir Thomas Dale, in March 1611. He was the minister for the settlement at Henrico and Bermuda Nether Hundred. He was drowned in the James River, some time before June, 1617. There came at the same time with Dale, Mr. Pool, or Powell.

Charles E. Hatch, Jr., The First Seventeen Years VIRGINIA 1607-1624, p.16: Pocahontas was placed under the tuteleage of Reverend Alexander Whitaker who instructed her in the Christian faith. Eventually she was baptized, and, in April 1614, in the church at Jamestown, married John Rolfe. This was a reflection of the religious concern that existed in Virginia. One of the ministers,

p. 60/61 Coxendale- Sir Thomas Dale had a good eye for land and security. Consequently he viewed the ground across the James from, and to the west of, Henrico with considerable interest which he translated into action soon after getting his principal settlement underway in 1611. It was in this area that the Rev. Alexander Whitaker chose his "Parsonage, or church land. "This was som[e] hundred acres impaled, and a faire framed parsonage house built thereupon, called Rocke Hall of the Towne." Capt. James DAVIS was made commander of the forts.

P.64 Bermuda City [Charles City]- The center of gravity in the Colony in the 1611-16 period was upriver in the Henrico and Bermuda City area. Capt. George Yardley, who was deputy governor and deputy marshal, "for the most part" lived here as did Alexander Whitaker who had the "ministerall chardge."

1613
Charles E. Hatch, Jr., The First Seventeen Years VIRGINIA 1607-1624 by 1613
West & Shirley Hundred on the north side of the James across from the mouth of Appomattox River described as having 25 commanded by Capt. Isaac Maddison, employed only in planting & curing tobacco with the profit thereof to cloth themselves. In 1624 "West and Sherlow Hundred" had its own Burgesses in the Assembly in the person of Isaac Madison and Richard Biggs.

20 Feb 1619
Conway Whittle Sams, The Conquest of VA The Third Attemp (following is said to be a list by Burk).

Corp. of Charles City, VA - Laid out for the company below Shirley Hundred Island 3000A at Westover 300A claimed by Capt. Francis WEST, upon Appomattox river.
William Farrar 100A
Henry Millward 250A
Charles Magnor 650A
Samuel Sharp 100A
Humphrey Kent 50A
Mr. Abraham Perseyet 1150A
Richard Simons 100A
Arthur Anthony 150A
William Sismore 100A
William Douglas 250A

Hatch, The First Seventeen Years VA 1607-1624
"The first real, or general, division was provided for in 1618 and became effective in VA in 1619. Two classifications of planters- those who came to VA before Dale departed in 1616 "ancient planters", each with three yrs. residence entitled to 100A. Those after Dale's departure, if they had come at their own charge, were to obtain 50A."

Note by Joy: [Henrico & Charles City County division line was moved in 1634 and William's land was on north side of Appomattox river in Henrico Co.]

16 Feb 1623
List of the Living & Dead in Virginia Feb. 16th 1623
Living - Att West & Sherlow [sic] Hundred
John Harris Thomas Floyd
Dorothe Harris Ellias Longe
infant Harris William Nichollas
infant Harris Roger Ratcliff
Robert Milver John Carter
Robert Partin Henry Bagwell
Margaret Partin Thomas Bagwell
infant Partin Edward Gardner
infant Partin Richard Biggs
Henry Benfon Mrs. Biggs
Nicholas Blackman William Biggs - son
Nathanell Tattam Thomas Biggs - son
Mathew Glofter Richard Biggs - son
Symon Surgis William Askew
Nicholas Baley Henry Carman
Ann Bayley Andrew Dudley
Eliner Phillips James Gay
Thomas Paulett Anthony Burrows
Thomas Baugh Rebecca Roffe
Thomas Packer son Roffe
Jonas Bayley son Roffe
John Truffell Peters, a maid
Chriftopher Beane

Living - The rest at West & Sherlow Hundred Island
Capt. Alexander WHITAKER of Henrico, who sent his man, John FLOOD, to aid COLTMAN. WHITAKER was drowned in March, 1617, dying intestate. When MARTIN returned in May he found no corn ; he held Governor YEARDLEY responsible for his loss, and this was the beginning of a long and bitter dissension between them. MARTIN sued YEARDLEY, and some of the depositions in the case have been preserved. The governor deposed that he had turned over WHITAKER's property to his servant Thomas HOBSON, " who was as his son and child kept by him in his life time," and that HOBSON had used the corn in feeding himself, Jarrett HOLLOCK, John FLOOD, and one Ruben, the other servants of Mr. WHITAKER. MARTHA SIZEMOURE, who lived at Mr. WHITAKER's house both before and at the time of his death, knew nothing of his owing MARTIN any corn, and stated that WHITAKER had been obliged to buy corn for himself from Thomas DOWSE.

So, the statement has been in circulation since 1976, and can now be cited! All Sizemore researchers should view, or download this book.

If Martha was Whitaker's housekeeper, why would William make a deposition?

Joy
Does anyone have the information on Martha Sizemore that may be in the *Spring Issue-March 1996 Vol.1, No.1, p.8 of the Seeking Sizemore newsletter*?

According to THE “ANCIENT” INDIAN ANCESTRY"
[ http://www.sizemorednaproject.com/history_surname.html ] William Sizemore was the first to Virginia and he is suggested as Martha Sizemore's husband.

According to this record it would appear Martha may have been here before William -

''When Captain John Martin went to England with Dale in the spring of 1616, he left Henry Coltman to plant his ground at Charles City in corn and tobacco, under the supervision of his friend Rev.
my fathers father stated he was indian. thru my childhood i was told the same. in the late 1800 my father told me that there was a murder ( no details that I can clearly remember ) and my grandfather (now deceased ) took that persons name of sizemore , but our origional name he said was Gentry. My grandfather had a picture of a squaw standing next to his father. so my greatgrandfather had a son, and he had a son (my father ). I was told once I am cherokee indian? They live in mid west, and california. My father a few months before he passed said he had to tell me this about my real last name. Could the last name Gentry be indian.

The parents of Edward Sizemore (1778-1856) who married Louanna Bolling/Bowling were George All Sizemore and Agnes Shepherd, not "Ed Ned". As Joy King said, George All's parents are unknown. Edward and Louanna had a son named Ephraim (c1812-1858) who married Naomi Ritchie. There are many, many Sizemore men named Edward, Ephraim, George, etc. It's important to distinguish between them.
Andrea Sizemore
Jim Sizemore and Geri,

I am so proud of my heritage and yes we are from humble, simple beginnings but we are a complex, mysterious, giving, people. my father was a farmer, his father before and his father before him. Bright men, hard working and sometimes rowdy. My father loved to fist fight when he was younger and like to drink but when God got a hold of him, my dad changed. Even when he drank he was a hard worker and provided for his children. We did not have airconditioning anywhere when i was growing up, but i had an earthly father who was dedicated. I am so thankful for my up bringing.
As a high school teaher, when engaging my students in a conversatioln, they love to hear about my child hood and my parents. I can't show my line on a goverment roll but my name is on the main roll. I love hearing from other Sizemores and i wish we would have some type of reunion somewhere. THanks for sharing any information on the Sizemores. My grandaddy sizemore, always said to stand tall, straight and your chin and eyes up. ENJOY being a Sizemore. I wish my children and grandchildren could carry the Sizemore name.

Debbie Sizemore

Geri

I don't know about you but I have been a Sizemore for a long time and I
don't feel as if we have missed anything being who we are and where we came
from. We have a long history , not much very remarkable most just plain
common folk ,which in my opinion is the best thing to be. Don't feel as if
we missed out just be proud to be part of it.

Jim Sizemore

Joy, Thanks so much for telling me. I had been wondering about the DNA project. His older brother is still living but he is in declining health and unable to participate. Guess there was a N---- in the woodpile somewhere, as the saying goes. Looks as though the Sizemores missed out on a lot of things.
Geri onekoolmeme@ymail.com

Whoever started that C--- needs to get out of the chicken pen awhile. That white stuff is affecting their brain, and I for one of thousands are proud ot the SIZEMORES!! The same goes for those who have started the idea the Sizemores are JEWISH. They are jealous because they cant claim to be NATIVE AMERICANS.God will surely have pity upon all those poor souls as I pray for all the nay sayers.

Mary Ann Keen, born Mar 18, 1846 Perry Co., KY, died Feb. 24, 1924 Thousandsticks, Leslie Co., KY. She married Hiram Sizemore Aug. 3, 1862 Breathitt Co., KY. Their daughter, Louisa, married John Thacker. Louisa was born March 18, 1867 Breathitt Co., KY, and died March 24 1950 in Oklahoma and is buried at the Ft. Cobb Cemetery, Caddo Co., OK.

Hiram Sizemore was the son of Wilborn Sizemore and Sarah Jones. Wilborn was NOT the son of Henry Hunting Shirt Sizemore, although family stories say that Henry raised him. Wilborn was the son of Henry’s sister, Rhoda Sizemore, and an unknown Bowling man, as proven by a DNA test on a descendant.
Carol, my late husband's line descends thru Henry Hunting Shirt I have been on this one line for over 14 years & I heartily agree with you you can get burnt out & disgusted at times. Still I keep digging. I would really appreciate hearing from you on your line with some dates. I got some of my info from World Family Tree CD's when I first started out. I use them to kind of have something to go on. Most have been really close when the date was not an estimated date.
You can e-mail me onekoolmeme@ymail.com.

I dont have any pictures of the older clan but I do have his line (some pics) of the ones in 1890's to present.

Be glad to furnish any info I do have with sources.

Thanks so much.
Evelyn,

I'd like to make one important clarification to this statement:
"Last, and most important, is the fact that two documented descendants from Arthur Sizemore have participated in the Sizemore yDNA project and they DO NOT match descendants of any of the other Sizemore lines tested to date, which includes descendants of the Cherokee Sizemores, whose yDNA findings show their original ancestor was an American Indian."

What you are actually referring to are the ECA *claims* of Cherokee ancestry. I too have some ECAs for this group that say they did not know a Ned Sizemore, and others that say they were *told by their representative* that they were descendants of old Ned. However, there is absolutely nothing in any of the numerous genealogical *records*, of the various Sizemore lines, that indicate they are descendants of the Cherokee!

Joy
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/SIZEMORE_DNA
Geri, I can't tell for sure but I assume you were replying to my post on Arthur Sizemore, and I also have to assume you did not read it, or my question was too complicated. I was not asking for information on Arthur Sizemore and his family - we have plenty of well-documented information on them. To put it simply, if you (or anyone else) has a father and mother showing on your tree as parents of Arthur Sizemore, I am requesting that you (or anyone else) produce some documentation and/or circumstantial evidence that they are his parents. Thanks.
Evelyn Sizemore Leslie
You mentioned lawson as a surname. I am looking for info on Mary Jane Sizemore's 1st child Mittie Lawson, born Dec 1919. In the 1920 census Mittie age 2 mons is with her parents William Lawson 35, and Mary Jane 20, in Clay Co.
William died within a yr or 2. Mary Jane is living with her parents Ezekial & Lindy in the 1930 census along with James age 3(Ezekial & Lindy's grandson) Phelma age 6(grandson), and Mittie age 10(granddaughter). Lindy is Malinda Baker, dau of Wm Baker and Nancy Sizemore. The grandchildren are listed as Sizemores, I saw the birth index for Mittie and the 1920 census so she is a Lawson. I think she married a sizemore(Mittie).

I do not know who the father of the other 2 children. Mary Jane is young here ao I assume she married again, but I have seen something where she also had a ason Roy abt 1940 but I think he died in the mid 70s.
I am really looking for info on the Lawson man.
can you help??
weschel@mvn.net
