The Skelton branches and migration

From my research (which isn't exhaustive or complete) I believe we are all related! But it all goes back to Virginia, where there were at least three brothers named Skelton who show up in the records as researched by Dr. Earl Skelton. He had trouble connecting them all together because of lost early colonial records.

From what I've seen and read, some of these families, if not all of them, went from Virginia to South Carolina and then on to Georgia. This would have been Robert Skelton and his wife Elizabeth Bobo Skelton. And some went from South Carolina north up into Indiana and Illinois with a few more dropping down into northern Missouri.

The group of Skeltons (my group!) from Robert Skelton mentioned above went south, to Alabama where there were some relatives, and some moved on to stop in southern Missouri.

As I said, this is as far as I've gotten, and this is my opinion based on where I've seen my relatives and the other Skelton lines appear. For example, I may be related to Red Skelton, but that connection is long ago and, I believe, lost in early Virginia ties. There is a whole book on this line of Skeltons that I've read, and another book that has my line and follows the line through to Alabama. So don't take what I say here as gospel, just conjecture. I would, however, appreciate any confirmation or refutation of this line of thought!

By now you probably have learned that Mary Skelton was the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Skelton, with siblings Solomon, Robert, JR., Sampson, Jeremiah Bobo, Rhesa, William, and Sarah Skelton. This is from the book "The Hart of Georgia".

I do have a little bit more, but not with me right now. Hope this helps!

Good to hear you got the information. The book is titled "Rogers-Skelton and Allied Families" By Helen Rogers Skelton, I believe is the way the author is listed.

You could possibly use ILL to get it from the Midwest Genealogical Center in Independence, Missouri. I would say about a third of this large book is about the Skelton clan, going all the way back to England. I used it as a major source of documentation because at the bottom of most pages there were references to other documents.

John

Is there any chance since 2000 that Karen Skelton is still
on here??
I just saw the posts regarding the Skeltons, especially
John who came over from England. I do have an ancestor
John Skelton who was in Shenandoah Valley, Va. during the
1770's.
Anyone know of this family, and just when they did come
over from England?

I've seen several references to this person, in some cases saying that John O. was John Otis, and another that John D. was supposed to be John O. instead! Plus someone claimed John O.
Hi Sue,

I do hope you have made considerable progress with your Family Tree since your last attempt to correspond with me over a year ago! I am not usually as tardy as this at replying, but I stummbled by accident back over a trail/line of enquirey I started back in about 2006 and had, I`m afraid, forgotten about after some initial emailing to people who contacted me at the time of my original query.

Delving into my Tree I see that I do have a Mary Anne SKELTON as a relation. However, it is most unlikely that our two Mary Anne`s are the same as mine was born in the Mar Q. of 1951 in Northallerton, Yorkshire. Although I have been unable to track down Mary Anne`s details other members of her family (siblings) were born, brought up and married and produced children of their own in this country. So as you can see it is most unlikely that our Mary Anne`s are one and the same.

Good luck with your research and please contact me again if you think I can be of any help. I will try not to be so behind with my reply the next time! Regards, A.M.S.

Re: Catherine Skelton m. Thomas Ferris

Thomas and Mary Ferris were living in Dalmellington, Ayr in 1871. Listed as boarders in their household were Robert and William Skelton. Robert and William were brothers of my great grandmother Jane (Skelton) Cumberland. Jane and her brothers were all involved in mining, Jane having lost her first husband early to the perils of mining work. It would be unlikely that the two Skelton boarders in the Ferris household in Scotland were not related to Thomas's mother, Catherine Skelton. They were most likely her nephews and Catherine was most likely my great great grandfather's sister. He was James Skelton from Gortin, Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

I have been keeping a Skelton database and have the following information on the name Catherine Skelton:

Daughter of Daniel, 1805, Farlough, Tyrone
Daughter of James Skelton and Martha, 1807, Gortin, Tyrone
Daughter of John Skelton and Rose, 1814, Gortin, Tyrone
Daughter of Thomas Skelton and Rebecca, 1815, Tyrone

The 1861 Scotland census lists Thomas and Catherine Ferries in Bothwell, Lanark. Catherine is listed as born in 1813. I have noticed that many of the Irish in Scotland did not state their correct age on the census so Catherine could be any of the Catherine Skeltons listed above but I suspect that she is probably one of the first two. The records from Tullyniskan Parish are missing for the years 1819 to 1820 and I suspect that is when my James Skelton was born. My bet is that your Catherine Skelton and my James Skelton were the children of James Skelton and Martha (I believe her maiden name was Wilson and that they were married in Killyman Parish, Co Tyrone).

Can you tell me anymore about the Lipsey family?

Interesting. I have seen a genealogy that doesn't have a Jonathan in it, but does have a Sarah Skelton. In fact, two of them! The one you speak of, that married Ambrose, I don't show a Jonathan as a brother. I do show her siblings as being Soloman, Sampson, Jeremiah Bobo (my line), Rhesa, Mary, and William. All children of Robert and Elizabeth.

What else might you have? And have you seen any other Skeltons in Pickens County? I have heard that Robert and Elizabeth went there to live and Robert died somewhere in Alabama.

John Skelton

I hadn't seen this post but it is very interesting. My great great grandmother's brother, Robert James Carson, married a lady named Mary Ann Carson in Tullyniskan Parish, County Tyrone. Robert's father was Robert Carson from the town of Derry in Tyrone, and Mary Ann's father was Andrew Carson. Mary Ann was born about 1841 and was probably also from County Tyrone. She and James were married at Tullyniskan Parish in 1858 and had three children in Ireland before moving to Scotland. In 1871, they were living in Old Monkland in Lanarkshire and Robert was working as a miner. There is a good possibility that Elizabeth Christina and Jane Carson were sisters to Mary Ann Carson whose father was Andrew Carson.

Ignore that last message. I got the two Thomas gentlemen confused. Your Thomas Ferris married Catherine Skelton and your Thomas Lipsey married Elizabeth Carson or Cassell. The last union really interests me. My great great grandmother was Annabella Carson. On her daughter's marriage record in Scotland, she was listed as Annabella Cassell. I'm wondering if there is a connection between Elizabeth and Annabella. Annabella's father was Robert Carson from Farlough, County Tyrone. He was born around 1797 and would be from the same age range as your Elizabeth.

I would be glad to share what I know about my ancestor Thomas Skelton (1755-1828) and his connection to his brother Robert Skelton (1747-?), but it is to much to put on a query board. Some 12 + pages. Would be glad to send a simple e-mail to anyone who would like to read my research on Thomas and his son William (1773-1844). If you are interested, please send me your e-mail address and I will forward what I know. And if anyone has documented research on the parentage of Thomas and Robert, I would appreciate your response. You can contact me off line at jmskelcroft@gmail.com

Have you ever seen this posting on the Lipsey board:

William Lipsey & Elizabeth Ferris
Posted by: Eric White Date: October 27, 2001 at 13:42:33
In Reply to: Re: Thomas and Mary Lipsey-PA/Scotland by shae lipsey of 283

At the time of the 1881 British census, William & Elizabeth Lipsey, along with children Thomas, Catherine, Elizabeth, and Mary Ann, were living in the Tannochside mining community near Bothwell in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Also living in Tannochside at that time were Elizabeth Christina Carson, my greatgrandmother, married to Samuel Walker, and her sister, Jane Carson, married to William McCann. Their father, Andrew Carson, was also there living in the household of Jane Carson McCann. According to family tradition, Andrew Carson's wife, Elizabeth Murphy, died while Jane and Elizabeth were young. A family named Lipsey are said to have taken in the children for a time and helped raised them. I wonder if William and Elizabeth Lipsey were that family. Have you ever heard anything of this? Incidentally, Samuel Walker and Eliz. Carson emigrated to Bellaire, Ohio (opposite Wheeling in the Ohio River) in 1883.

Followups:

* Re: William Lipsey & Elizabeth Ferris bess butler 8/18/08

Do you have any more information about Catherine Skelton and her family that you can share? I have her married to Thomas Farris, not sure if they were married in Ireland. She died 12 Feb 1867 in Newarthill, Lanarkshire, Scotland. I have their daughter Elizabeth Farris b. 1846 ?Ireland or Scotland m. William A Lipsey b. 1844 Ireland. I visited the records office and got a copy of GGrandfather Willam Lipsey and GGrandmother Elizabeth's marriage record. It looks like they all were miners and followed the work from Ireland to Scotland in the mid 1800's, then my family made their way to PA about 1880 to work in the coal mines in central PA.

Do you know any more about their ancestry?
What is your line?
Help if you can.
