"Alice" was Alice Major of Accomack, VA.; daughter of John Major and Jane Lorrymer. Alice married John Waller, Thomas Shiels/Shiles, then finally Richard Whitty; haing offspring with all 3.

Hello Glen. I've just briefly glanced over the research you've provided and printed it out to study. If I understand you correctly, we actually have no documentation there was a Thomas "Child" Skiles, b 1619, and he is NOT the father of Thomas Skiles, b. 1668. right?

I will study this material today. I hope the book is still in print mentioned. I've been trying to locate 4 books that are out of print and recently found 3 of 4. The last has to come from www.familysearch.org on microfish, which I have no clue about. I believe you must have a program to read it.

Glen, you are so kind to share this information with us. Gees, I wish we could carry our lineage back to England - do you think it's possible. I have other lineages that are just as frustrating as this one.

Thomas Childs on the Speedwell may have been a relative, but is not our Thomas. Our Thomas most likely arrived in Northumberland County Virginia in in 1650 as a headright.

Us Skiles (Skyles in my case) were most likely Shiels from England. Before Daniel Webster the "Sh", "Sk ""Sch" in Ano-Saaxon were interchangable. Example the captain of a SHip is the SKipper and a long SHirt is a SKirt. As the Shiles strayed north from Anglo Maryland to Germanic Pennsylvania, Henry Shiles became Heinrich Skiles.

Always interested in new researchers, also we have a DNA project at Family Tree DNA is your interested.

Rachel Elizabeth Mann, I have a load of info on her; especially her mother's lineage, Eleanor Routh. I have been working on Henry and Elizabeth. Thus far, I've gotten as far as Elizabeth's mother. However, before Ancestry made the change in the system, I had more of her lineage. I'm searching.

I've read the messages between you and Bonnie about Thomas Skiles who settled in MD. I am a descendent of Hugh McGuire Skiles of Westmoreland Co. PA., whose grandfather, Henry Skiles, moved from Wicomico, MD to Lancaster Co., PA. Henry died in 1750. After living near Ligonier, PA. for a couple of generations, several members settled in eastern Iowa (Muscatine & Scott Cos.) in the mid 19th cent. My gr-grandmother, Maggie (Skiles) Campbell and her family lived in Newton, IA, where she died in 1948 at the age of 97. She was the last of my Skiles ancestors.
In 2003 I visited White Haven, MD. and the property where Thomas or maybe Thomas Jr. lived and farmed.
I understand that Thomas Sr's brother, James, settled in Accomac VA. Do you know this to be true?

No, the ship's passenger manifest for the Speedwell in 1635 had him listed as Thomas Childs only, age 30, which would have made his birthday about 1605. The name for this family was recorded many different ways on official documents in colonial Maryland - Shields, Shiall, Schuyl, Shiles, etc. I can only assume that the literate Englishman making the record wrote the name the way it sounded to them. I also assume that our ancestors were not literate, and did not spell their name for the recorder. I don't know how or when it became Skiles, but it was definitely Skiles in Tennessee around 1800, and Skiles in Central Missouri around 1850, which is where my family comes from. Perhaps when our ancestors finally became educated they merely spelled their name phonetically - the way it sounded. If Skiles is an Americanization of a German name I have not been able to find any German names which sound similar to it, so I have basically given up on my geneological research as a dead end, so no, I am not writing a book.

I forgot to mention this Thomas Skiles was listed as Thomas Childs, age 30, on the passenger manifest of the Speedwell, from London to Virginia in 1635. As later in Maryland, apparently his name was recorded the way it sounded to the literate Englishman writing it down.

I've done a little research on our name as well. I don't recall where I found this, but Thomas Skiles sailed from London on the "Speedwell" in 1635 to Virginia when he was 30 years old. He was supposedly originally from the Black Forest region of Germany. He settled in Maryland, married a woman named Alice, and there he was recorded as Shields, Shiall, Shiles, Skiles, etc. His relatives, my descendents, migrated to Tennessee and then Missouri, where I am from. I don't know how the name Skiles originated. I traced my lineage through the Mormon church's "familysearch.org" web site back to this Thomas from Maryland. This is not really definitive, but it is more than you have thus far.

I am a descendant of the Skiles's. I have traced my lineage back to Thomas Childs Skiles b. 1619, Black Forest, Germany. He was married to "Thomas" Skiles b. 1622, Scottland about 1641.

I've searched all of Ancestry, but no luck. There are several private boards, but I'm not sure if they even have any information on these two.

Has anyone discovered a census or a trustworthy source that can share with me the names of the Skiles/Mann's children.

Thus far, I have the following.

Sarah Elizabeth Skiles 1863 – 1900
Julia Skiles 1865 –
William Mann Skiles 1866 – 1948
Fannie Skiles 1867 –
Charles William Skiles 1868 – 1944
Jacob Clemment Skiles 1879- 1960

Jacob Clemment was my grandfather. The last living family member that would remember says they remember Sarah Elizabeth, William Mann, and Charles (Charlie, but no mention of Julia.

Bonnie, thanks for all the info you've provided about your lineage - I'm finding we're all related in some way or another as I'm sure you are as well ;-).

I hope Bob can answer your question, since I didn't know Thomas, Sr had a brother. There is a LOT of mystery around that particular family.

For instance, did Thomas Childs Skiles marry here in the states to an American or did he marry someone abroad. Bob has done extensive research, which truly excites me. I hope he'll pursue again one day.

Let's hope he can answer your question, and now mine.

Jacob Jr was my great grandfather and Sr was my g-great grandfather. I've been told there are stories about both men, so I need to look them up on Ancestry. Just finished sourcing my mother' lineage.
