My greatgrandmother was Jennie SLACK. I know she was born 29 January 1862 in northern New Jersey. She married Charles S DAY from Sussex County NJ and they lived in Sussex County and in Newark. Charles was a brewer for Ballantine. They seem to have been pretty well off. I believe Jennie had a brother named Samuel that owned a home on Lake Mohawk (I think in Sussex County). Jennie died of consumption 7 April 1895 in Kearney, NJ and her remains were transported back to the family's home in Franklin Furnace, Sussex. She is buried in North Church Cemetery in Hardyston, NJ. New Jersey Vital Statistics says there is no death certificate for her, only a Transit Permit which I have a copy of. I do not know anything more about Jennie's family but would be happy to share about her married family and descendents should we find a match.

Re: brothers Charles and William Slack, Norvich, VT; 1850 CA Gold Rush

I can't express how glad I am to have found your family. Your two ancestors are mentioned repeatedly in my David Cooper's memoir. The original manuscript was not structured at all, and I have separated the text into twelve chapters. Your William, and particularly Charles, are mentioned probably 20 times or more, and in each of six or eight of the 12 chapters. I am curious as to whether either of them left any written records concerning their Gold Rush experiences, and to their ultimate successes that may have resulted from the money they made from the California experience. I would like to be able to mention what they did after the CA trip, and what their line of work was at that point. Any record of their lives after the trip would be valuable additions to the commentary, and would be greatly appreciated. If there is an appreciable amount of information, I could probably do a separate brief appendix on their lives, as they were instrumental in making David's life more meaningful. (Not to mention, making it longer, too, instead of ending in an 1851 gunfight.)

At the very least, you will probably have records of who and when they married, their children's names and birth dates, and some other expansion on the family. You only mentioned the one brother whose line you descend from. Were there other siblings? Are any of this Slack family's records yet posted on Internet genealogy sites? I appreciate your having already given me their birth dates, as David mentions their ages in passing, and the statement now has a little more clarity.

Are there any relatives your immediate family knows of, who descend directly from either Charles or William? If there are, they should be made aware of this story, as it is almost as much a story of their ancestor as it is of my David.
That's tremendous! Thank you.

Do you have any further knowledge about them, or is that pretty much all that is known? How does your direct ancestor tie in with them? Do you have info on their father and mother, and any siblings? Are there any old family stories of a trip to the California Gold Rush? They were really good friends to my g-g-grandfather, and without them, I am not too confident my ancestor would have survived (and I would not be here now). I hope you have more than just those census records, but if not, I can share some really good stories about them with you. I was really hoping that I could highlight their lives a bit more in the book I am editing for publication next year. They played a major role in several parts of the story, and the results of their lives and their efforts should be passed on in your family.
Hello,
My name is Marty Slack. Ijust happened to be browsing the message boards and came across your posting. The brothers you mention are part of my ancestry. Another brother, Marcellus Granville Slack was my direct ancester.
According to a posting on Rootsweb I think, according to the W. S. Slack book,The Slack family, More Particularly An Account of the Family of Eliphalet Slack and his wife Abigail Cutter, Their Ascendants, Descendants and Relations,
Resolved Slack was born RI 1784, the son of Joseph Slack (Benjamin, Benjamin, William). He hired out to a Quaker named Harris and worked in a factory for a number of years. Resolved followed horse-racing and "accumulated means." He married 1) Amy Greene, daughter of James and Rebecca (Pitman) Greene of Providence, born 1788. Resolved went to Charleston, SC and was engaged in merchandising, also had an interest in a water-run factory with a Mr. Weaver. Resolved married a second wife in SC [I don't know whether Resolved and Almy/Amy divorced or just separated. She died 1859] and moved to Alabama in 1826. He died in AL in 1864. He was said to have had a brother Thomas, who was a merchant in Cincinnati and a brother Benjamin.[according to information I had Resolved had brothers Thomas and Benjamin] He had a child, Dr. Slack does not state that it was a daughter but says this child married in AL to a Waddell and had A. A. Waddell, born in AL 1842, served in Confederate Army and in 1876 was living with a wife and 8 children in Mason, TN.

The unnamed child of Resolved also a daughter by husband Waddell, and she died in 1855.

Posted by: Donna Slack Stewart (ID *****2264) Date: March 20, 2003 at 07:02:50

I do show sons James and John, sons of Resolved and Almy.

Are you still looking for information on James' parents that were born in Rhode Island. My ggggf was Resolved Slack born in Rhode Island. He was first married to Almy Greene b. Rhode Island and then went to South Carolina and remarried and had two daughters.

My ggf Charley F. Slack was living with Resolved in Alabama on the 1850 Census. He was 12 years old and Resolved was 76 so we assume he is Charley's grandfather but we have not been able to find Charley's father. Resolved was possibly his maternal grandfather but went by the Slack name. Perhaps his mother was never married.

My brother had a YDNA test and we are looking for a male descendant of Resolved that has or will have a YDNA test so we can prove/disprove the relationship.

Slack Family from Lambertville, NJ

Hello everyone,

I've been researching my mother's side of the family who mostly lived in Lambertville, NJ. I've been searching for the parents of my Great-Great-Great-Great Grandfather John Slack who was born around 1811 in NJ I believe. His wife was Eliza who died in 1884 in Lambertville. They have four sons that I know of - George, Samuel, John, and Henry (my Great-Great-Great Grandfather). I know a lot of the Slacks are buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, however I am no longer in the state. Does anyone out there have a connection to this family?

Looking for information on brothers Charles and William Slack, who have been mentioned at considerable length in my g-g-grandfather's journal(David Cooper), soon to be published. I would very much like to find out more about them if possible. They were very good friends and companions to my relative at the time, traveling with him through some serious adventures enroute to the California Gold Rush (1850). The younger of the two was Charles, apparently born around 1830 in Norvich, Vermont. I would very much like to find out more about the Slack brothers if possible, and to share some wonderful stories I have about them.

I am looking for more information regarding Johnnie "Joseph" Slack.

He was born on May 25, 1884. At some point, around the turn of the century, he emigrated to America. I know that his point of departure was Liverpool, Englad. I have heard information that he was originally from North Ireland, but have not been able to confirm that. I don't know where his point of arrival was.

He settled in Beaumont, TX. He married Annie (Anna) Rinkel; I do not know the date of their marriage. They had four kids. Gertrude Slack, John Slack, Joseph Slack, and Henry Slack.

Annie passed away in 1921. After her passing, Johnnie Slack abandoned the children.

Since the four children were so young, there is very little information I have regarding Johnnie, other than what I already included.

If any of you have information, I look forward to talking to you more.

Thanks so much!

Sincerely,
Karen

I have yet to see Slack as a Scot or Irish Clan. If you hav further information on the Slack/Irish/Scottish connection I would love to hear about it.
