Hi All,

I'm researching my husband's family. I am only back to his grandparents, Jonathan and Nellie Doreen Slark of Berkshire England. He was born in Wokingham around 1900. I know nothing about her.

Thanx for the reply. We just got back from the UK in June. Because Kevin uses a wheelchair and the buses aren't wheelchair accessible, I never got to go to Reading to do any research. :( What info do you have on this family?

Thanks for your reply. You can contact me via genesreunited where I have a copy of our tree. It has been a long struggle with the Slarks' Such an unusual name. A definite link ith William and Sophia would be great.

I think you are right.
Sophia was Sophia Beckley (beckley or bickley) marriage to William Slark was 12 sept 1830 at Saint James, parish church Paddington
I would be interested in your connections if you wish to share them.

Hello I've just found this message board on Ancesrty and have been scrolling down from January's entry. i have got back as far as John George he is my husband's Gt Gt Grand Father. We believe his Father to be a William Slark and his mother a Sophia but are not 100% certain. He was George John on the copy of his son's birth certificate.
I'll let you know our connections if you are interested?

Don't think this is my line, we seem to be all in the Berkshire area into the late 1700's. Cannot find any Edward Slark's so far.

This info' was passed to me from a descendent of Susannah Eden who was married to Edward Slark - there were 6 other children from this union.
Girls: Sarah/Anne/Mary and Edward/John/Robert/Joseph

I would be interested to have any additional details either forward or backwards that you come across.

I read your reply re: slark family Upton-on-Cheney as my own direct line seem tobe descended from Edward and Susannah nee Eden.

That's interesting, the Wiliam Slark I am looking for was born earlier, about 1827, and he was a coachman, lived around Marylebone.

I'm really looking for families that originated out round Isleworth way - I found some that were bakers from Hounslow, some of whom were living in the Hanover Square area, and and Edward Slark who was a stableman living in Marylebone from Hounslow, I wonder if these are connected. Of course it's difficult as these were born before 1837, so difficult to get any birth information.

Hi Clare: I don't think your Slark family and the Slark family I am following (which by the way was my mother's maiden name) are the same group; though somewhere along the lines there might be connections as Slark is not that common a name. My William Slark (my ggrandfather) was born 1845 - his place of birth is shown as "The Queen's Royal Mew" in the Registration District Saint George Hanover Square, sub-district Belgrave, Middx. His father (James) at the time of his birth was a Groom in the service of the then Prince of Wales (son of George III).

Does any of this help you further in your research?

Hi, thanks very much for replying.

I've now found that Mary Slark's brother, William Slark, was born in Isleworth. Mary Slark says she was born Marylebone, where she lived, I don't know if this is true, they always seem to say that! I suspect they probably originated from the Berkshire Slarks some generations before.

I'm finding it very hard to find them in censuses as the name is often mistranscribed. Some censuses have lots of Slarks, 10 years later you can find half of them have disappeared ! I have found entries under spark and stark, even one under slaike. I've tried Hark and Hart, shark, slack and stack! I don't know if you have any useful tips on finding entries.

Anyway thanks for getting back to me on this one!

I do have a Mary Elizabeth Slark in my tree. She was the sister of my great grandfather - she was born in 1877 in Windsor, Berks. Her parents were: Williams Slark and Louisa Slark (nee Starbuck). If you think there is a connection with your line or if I can be of any more help to you, please let me know.

Quite a few people seem to have information on this family. Does anyone have information about a Mary Slark born c. 1840, probably in Berkshire, though she had a daughter in Marylebone in 1867? She 'married' William Bird (he is the father of her daughter at least)but I can't find traces of this marriage. My Mary Slark may not have come from Berkshire - there was one born in Bristol around 1837, don't know if she was related to the Mary Slark in Swindon.

I am trying to trace down a relative of my husband's, whose mother was Mary Slark. She had a daughter in Marylebone in 1867 but I think she may have been born in Berkshire, Easthampstead, so may have been cousin or somehow related to your family. I'm finding it difficult to track down Slarks, I think they must be mistranscribed as Stark/Shark etc. a lot of the time. If you know any more about Slarks born c. 1840 in Berkshire I'd be interested to hear.

Mary Slark would have been my husband's great-great grandmother.

Its been more than a year since I posted any messages on this list re: SLARK family. My mother was a Slark (one of 7 children) - her father John William Slark was born 1872 in New Windsor Berks like his father William Slark b. 1845 and his father James Slark b.1813 as well his father James b. circa 1780 all served in the Royal Household of the time. I know of at least 5 siblings of my ggrandther (JOHN WILLIAM b. 1872) NAMELY Henry Slark, Harriet Slark, Louise Slark, Mary Elizabeth Slark and Alice Slark. If anyone on the list thinks they might be connected, I would like to hear from you.

John George Slark was born in Finchley in approximately 1850/1851. He married Mary ann Lewis in 1872 and on his
marriage certificate his fathers name was William.
Please could anyone tell me who his mother was.?

Mary Slark married Thomas Strange in Swindon abt 1820.
She was the daughter of Edward Slark and Susannah Eden, baptised at Upton Cum Chalvey 9th March 1794. I have considerable information about her descendants.

I have a Great-Great Grandfather John Slark born around 1810
in Windsor in Berkshire - although I know he is the son of another John born in Upton-cum-Chalvey in Buckinghamshire;his father was an Edward Slark born probably in or near Old Windsor in Berkshire - I have no links of family other than direct ones! However there could be brothers and sisters who may fit in somewhere??

Hello Tammy I saw your query whilst searching for a lost uncle in USA - but my ancestors are same name and same County - I have traced a direct line back to 1674 - maybe I can help you -although I don't live in Berkshire area.

Hi I read your message with interest as I trace my ancestry on my Mother's side (Slark) to Old Windsor, Berkshire area but so far have only gone back to a James Slark (1813) gg-grandfather. I have a lot of family history back to here - could there be any connection.

This is my great-grandmother, who lived in Elroy, Wisconsin. She had two children Jane and Robert. Her husband's name was Butman. Jane, at least, was born in Elroy. They moved to California sometime around 1899. Anyone have information?
