Re: William SLATER in Australia 1895 -- PRESTON question

Greetings ! I have posted to Slater as well as Keach and other surnames. My methods of inquiry are not always understood because I have a w- i - d - e net in my mind and many people cast a very narrow net when looking for ancestors. Of course one needs to narrow down from millions ... however, I see value in asking questions that are not obvious to most and which I feel have SOME connection ......

So, now that I have bored the reader I will get to my point and question; does anyone know (and/or care) the connection between PRESTON, (Lancashire, ENG.) and PRESTON, CONNECTICUT - US ???

I have been attempting to figure out which one of about 3 William Slaters was married to Alice Keach. Slater was a prominent name in PRESTON, Connecticut and there is a Slater Museum in Norwich, Connecticut http://www.norwichfreeacademy.com/museum/ -- which borders Preston, Connecticut. Preston and Norwich also share the (now abandoned) Norwich State Hospital http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/78842/history_of_no...

"During his term at the Academy, a local businessman, William Slater, expressed an interest in finding a way to honor his distinguished father, John Fox Slater, a benefactor to education. Dr. Hutchinson suggested a building for The Norwich Free Academy, and Mr. Slater provided $100,000 for its construction."

OK, I lost my train of writing. I am not in the thick of my genealogic hunt at the moment, so I do not have one of the specific points that I want to make .... William Slater was also involved with The Norwich State Hospital, but I cannot find the reference that I had previously found : ( frustration.

Suffice it to say that I am interested in making a few connections. Anyone follow my "braided cord" ? The years I have looked at Preston, Connecticut and Slaters are late 1800's to mid 1900s, but I intend to move forward and backward until I can solve this family puzzle.
My e-mail is nkeider@wildblue.net .

Henry Madison McGivern was the son of Catherine V. Slater and David McKelvy. Henry took the name McGivern after JOSEPH Eugene McGiveron died in 1907. I think this was his way of connecting to his mother.

Nita

Jim,

Catherine V. Slater McKelvy McGiveron was my husband's Ggrandmother. We only found out about the McKelvy connection through her will and Henry Madison McGivern through his conntesting the will. Notice the two spellings of McGiveron- Joseph Eugene spelled it with a ron and Henry Madison spelled it ern. He took the name after the death of Joseph Eugene. I know very little of Henry, other than the fact he was bitter that Catherine's three children got all the material items upon her death and he only received $25.

I obtain his death certificate and it stated the names of his parents and the fact that he was born in Butler.

Would you happen to know Abraham's death date? I can find nothing other than he has a Civil War headstone and it buried in Calvary Cemetery in Butler.

Nita

Looking to any information on Slater Family from Durham.
My grandfather was Fred Slater (born 1899 at Sherburn Hill) to William and Anne Slater(nee Reybold I think). Fred went to New Zealand at some stage and married Lily Hall in 1923. They returned to Ferryhill, Durham where they had my mum Nancy in 1925. They returned to New Zealand the same year.

Jim,

Do you have any information on David McKelvy, the first husband of Catherine Slater McKelvy McGiveron? I know they were married in Butler around 1879 and found them in the 1880 New York, Cattaragus County, Olean Census. They had a son who was raised by a Simons family. David worked in a brick yard and must have died (an asssumption).

Nita Keider-------------- nkeider@wildblue.net

  Peter Slater b 1821 d ?, son of Henry and Susan Dunbar Slater was married to Mary M Elder ( b abt 1829-d 1856) abt 1846. they had 5 children : Jacob 1847, Susanna Jane 1850, Mariah 1851, Peter H 1852, William M 1854.

Peter Slater then married Elizabeth Reintzel ( b 1821- d?)abt 1859. They had 2 children: Thomas 1859, John Francis 4 Feb 1860. Elizabeth probably died abt 1861.

Peter Slater then married Catherine Hartman Hollobaugh (b 1823-d?) They had 2 children : Thomas 1863, James 14 oct 1864. Catherine had 3 children to John Hollobaugh, John 1847, Sara 1848, Joseph 1849.

I don''t know who Mary Elder or Catherine Hartman parents were. Thomas Slater was named twice and I don't know exactly who he belongs to, it is possible that he is the son of Mary Elder also. 1880 census has Thomas in Forest Co., PA with Peter H Slater and he 24 years old. That would make him born in 1856. I think that some birth dates on the census have confused when he was born.

I don't have any thing on Jacob, Mariah, John Francis, James, and the only thing that I have on Thomas in 1880 census.

This Slater family are the descendants of (Johann Schlehdorn) John Slater who came from Alsace Lorraine, France with the French Troops during the Revolutionary War. He stayed and settled in Butler Co., PA, some of the family moved to Clarion and Venango Co.

Jim

We have been advised by an independent researcher that my partners great grandfather John William Slater could in fact be your Ernest John Slater.
John William married Margaret Ellen Quinn on 2 June 1912 in Stepney London England.
They already had 1 son John Albert Slater (Quinn) born out of wedlock in 1911. Could your Ernest Slater have returned to England? It would explain why John William could not marry Margaret Ellen in 1911 to legitimise his son as you state he was not divorced until 1912, do you know the month of the divorce?

First, I am not related. You will find many "volunteers" across the country that try to take your facts and find information. BUT BE CAREFUL, sometimes you will find volunteers that connect to WRONG families, just based on names. So you need to VERIFY anything given, even given in best intentions, even CENSUS data can be wrong enough to identify the wrong families.

I've been doing genealogy for YEARS. Back to the 70's for my family. Helping since early 90's in Norwegian and US research. BUT, I have no idea what you mean by "BMD". When you post, if you give an abbreviation, identify what you mean also. This goes for "CA"... does someone mean Canada or California.

This "BMD" in South Dakota, has Annie born in England and James born in Canada, but you have indicated James was born in England. You need to identify what BMD means so a volunteer can identify where you might have gotten information from South Dakota.

I will contact the site administrator to have your posting moved to the "Slater" surname board on Rootsweb. Because there is apparently NO connect to Washington State. The members of the Slater surname "might" have more of a connection.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA.

Re: James Sisson Slater b.1863

Christa,
I see you are new to genealogy posting, at least on Rootsweb. Genealogy is a fun and fascinating hobby. You become the investigator, searching for clues in documentary evidence, you conduct interviews, hoping to identify your "suspect" and where they were.

When you post, it is VERY important to post enough information to identify your "suspect". Their date of birth is very important. If you don't have that, identify approximate year of birth, names of parents, siblings, spouse, children and any information on them to further eliminate those NOT being the subject. In this case you did identify his date and place of birth; and, enough information to find him in Canada.

I guess the biggest question, you posted in Whatcom County, Washington State. Is there any reason you know or suspect they were in Whatcom Co?

But, you identified "Annie Axford". Is "Axford" her maiden name, middle name? Where was she born? I did find a John Slater born to both parents born in England (but I was able to eliminate him). Through Canadian census, I was able to find the children's dates of birth, but not the place.

Annie appears to have died in Alberta.

You may have the following, I didn't and needed it for the research. It is also helpful for other researchers and archives:

The 1901 Census for pOnoka (note spelling), Alberta, Canada. District #202, Subdistrict Number Q(3).
James S. Slater, born June 24, 1863
Annie, born February 12, 1865
Richard H, born September 22, 1891
John S, born August 18, 1894
Mary M, born May 21, 1900
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/DisplayHousehold.jsp?sd...

The 1906 Census for Strathcona District, Alberta
Both James and Annie shown as being 42.
Richard is now Richard "A", 14
John 11
Mary is "Mary ?? S.", age 6.

The 1911 Census for Red Deer, Alberta,
James S, head, June 1863, widower
Richard S, Sep 1891
John S. August 1894
Mary M, May 1900

Any additional information that would help?
Ron Bestrom

Sylvanus Slater, b. 1849, PA

Sylvanus is found in the 1880 census in Scranton, Lackawanna, PA with his new bride, Lizzie. He is 23 years old and she is 21; the census indicates they were married in 1879.

They also found in the 1900 census, still in Scranton, with five of their nine children. By 1910, Elizabeth is listed as a widow and another child has died. The remaining children are:

Walter Herman, b. abt 1884
Minnie S., b. abt 1888
Franklin David, b. 1893
Emma Lydia, b. 1899.

Elizabeth Bennett Slater died at the age of 51 in 1914 and is buried in Hyde Park/Washburn Cemetery in Scranton.

Any information on any members of this family would be greatly appreciated. I'm especially interested in finding the names of the parents of Sylvanus and Elizabeth. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Kathy
Kailua, Hawaii
My earliest Slater is Richard Dawes Slater, born c 1812 in Georgetown. He married Anna Disney in Dorchester, MD and then moved, I believe with some of the Disney's, to the Cincinnati area. Oral family legend says that his parents died when he was fairly young, and that his family was part of that of the merchant Samuel Slater of the northeast. You asked about the name Davis, I wonder if the name Dawes has been mistakenly written as such when it was supposed to be Davis.

Lost Slaters from Muskoka in the USA? Henry, Fred, and Thomas

Looking for confirmation and possibly long lost relatives. Henry Slater b. abt 1850 in Stretford, Lancs, England to George & Sarah. Married Mary Ellen Renshaw Dec 1872? in Chorlton, Lancs, England. She was born 22 Jan 1851.

Henry and Mary Ellen can be found in the 1881 census with children: Ada (1875) and Fred (1881). Immigrated to Canada in 1884, and settled in Bracebridge, Muskoka Dist.,ON, Canada. The Canadian Census of 1901 shows Mary living with children: Alfie, Jennie, Thomas, and Ada (Bates), with 3 of Ada's children.

Family history "forgot" Henry's name. He was rumoured to have disappeared while on a logging trip. This was apparently before 1901. My aunt claims she was once contacted by a woman from Buffalo, NY, USA, looking for her Slater ancestor who came from Bracebridge, leading us to theorize that he may have started a new family in the USA. Family rumour says he was forced to leave England by the other Slaters. Anyone recognize him?

I am Alfred's grgrandson. His son, my grfather, once told me of his uncle Fred Slater who moved to California. Fred was born in March 1881, 2 years before his younger brother Alfred.

Thomas Slater. I knew nothing of him at all, and only learned of him by finding the 1901 census.

Also looking for descendants of Ada and Jennie. Ada married Frederick R. Bates and had 4 known children: Ivan Renshaw, Elna, Gervan Allen, and Aileen Victoria. Jennie married William E. Boyce.

Would love to find more Slater relatives

Thank you so much for replying. I don't know how my "thread" went to Whatcom Washington. That shows my newness in using these boards.:) I know James was in Montana but I don't know about Washington.
I have proof that James S. Slater b. 1863 was in Hamlin Co. South Dakota, and Ponoka, Canada. So yes I have those 2 census' plus a BMD record for two children. but that's all. Nothing after 1911.
I have possible immigrations of son Richard Henry and Dau. Mary M. but they are not solidified. I have a possible brother of James'and I have Annie's family. Still trying to iron our the wrinkles. Axford is her maiden name. Found on So. Dakota- BMD.
Annie born: 12 Feb. 1865-England
James B: 24 Jun 1863-Canada
Richard H. b:22 Sep 1891-S.D.
John S. b: 18 Aug 1894-S.D
Mary M. b: 21 May 1900-S.D.
I have this Slater line quite a ways back into England. I'm looking for immigration records and marriage records of James and a George whom I think is James brother. Also Annie's death record. with no luck as of yet.
May I ask how you connect?
Do you have anything other than those 2 Census?
Thank you again for your help. My Samuel was born 1801 in either new york or conn or mass... it was listed three different ways in census.
I wonder if the davis was a mistake, as I think that name would have been very unusual at that time.
John Slater born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England

I have a friend who is looking for family connections back in England. His name is LaVerne, father was Roy Lee Slater, born in USA in Grant County, WI. Roy's father was John on on Roy's birth certificate shows that John was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England. LaVerne had a sister who had a daughter that married a Klaas. So this is a connection into Klaas side.

Anyway, LaVerne was trying to find more information on family and connections back in Macclesfield. I believe John came over around 1878 through Pennsylvannia, but would have to look up the data again.

Was hoping that someone may have some data, and potentially link LaVerne to family connection in England. LaVerne is retired and does not use the computer. So I am helping him out.

Bill Klaas
williamklaas@yahoo.com

Sam Slater and Mary Wagoner were my great grandparents. Their son Charlie, my grandfather and his son Charlie, my father. Elorene and Mildred, the daughters, still live in Mena AR, I believe. My father is still living and my grandmother (Edna McEntire Slater).

Matilda and William also had a daughter Rebecca born approx. 1857. William remarried to an Emma Bye in 1858. Any idea what happened to Matilda? Did she die in childbirth or shortly after?

Hi Carol,

In the case you still use this since your post, I'd love to see what you have found. It sounds like my wife is a distant cousin of yours. Now that we're expecting a child, we've become more interested in finding out the baby's ancestors.

Re: Slater family from GLEMSFORD SUFFOLK UK

I know your posting is old but I was wondering if you came across the family tree titled "Ye Slaters of Glemsford" by John Slater. I believe he completed it in 1992. I have a copy from my grandfather Robert Slater who was your George's nephew. This tree goes back to Simon Ray who married Sarah Pilgrim in 1599.

carnielu@hotmail.com
