Former Slaves: Nathan & Dotia SLAUGHTER - Bowling Green, Kentucky

I am helping a cousin with her research. Her GGG Grandparents were Nathan (b. about 1815) & Dotia Slaughter - likely former slaves. Their children were born during slavery: Wesley, Lenton (8 children), Ann Eliza (son John Wesley), Drusilla (married ___ Porter- 2 children), Harriet (4 children), Nancy & Stella all born between 1839 and 1855. Does anyone have a record of these people either in the family or listed as slaves of a household in Bowling Green or Warren County, KY? Thanks!

Kristen, Michael has both the German lines (his and mine)and collected some of the English lines. You do that to sort out the correct lines, and so you don't go down the same blind alley again. You can find him on genforum too, because that is where I first saw his work. He's very generous in helping others. Just put in your family name and add genealogy forum after it on your search site. It should bring up a lot of things to check besides the forum, which is how I get into it.

Forgive me. I meant to reply to this thread and never did.

I exchanged emails with Michael and he believes that maybe my John Isaac is the same as a "John J" (I's and J's being easily confused in hand written records) that is listed as a descendent of the German family, but the problem is that there is a death record online for John Isaac Slaughter that lists is parents as John and AB which would not be correct for the John J we've found.

I plan to drive down to Richmond sometime and see if I can find the death record myself to verify.

Hi cousin, Michael just finished a new book, trying to correct some wrong information he was given. Unfortunately, I didn't send in my work before he finished his book. I sent him the $75 he wants for the book. That includes postage and handling. My line of descent is from Jacob Slaughter, Jr. (Schlotterer) to his daughter Barbara, who married Jacob Strickler. Barbara and Jacob Strickler had a daughter, Elizabeth Strickler, who married Owen Bryan Ramey in Washington Co., AR. They were my 2nd great grandparents.

A footnote inre gabriel Slaughter,
He served with Governor Issac Shelby in the war of 1812 and opon his return he was elected Lt. Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. within the first 30 days of his term the Govertor died and Gabriel became Governor. The State cabinet resigned so that he could appoint his own people. He appointed a "Loyalist" as State Treasurer and this so infuriated the legislature that for the next three years the referred to him an Lt. Governor or Acting Governor. He is credited for starting the Public School System in Kentucky.
Bob Brown

I believe Smith Slaughter married the Miss Crane.
Smith Slaughter's will 1847 left things for heirs of his brother Thomas and Gabriel's heirs(2 daughters Mary and Frances)
France Ellen born 10 Mar. 1810, married 12 Dec. 1826.
I know this line is mine as Frances was in court right before she married in 1826 so Gabriel was dead before that date and James, her brother, was made Guardian

Thanks. I have Gabriel, Thomas, William , John and Smith Slaughter as children of William and Katherine Zimmerman.
Have Robert Slaughter Jr. married to Mary Smith as his parents.
My Gabriel Slaughter married Frances Sophia Hord. Papers are in Indiana Court that their child Frances Ellen Slaughter was a child of Gabriel and James , her brother, was made guardian of her in 1826. There was money involved from a lawsuit of the Hords and Millers. My Frances Ellen received four thousand bucks!!!!! Of course her husband relieved her of it quickly
I alsso heard that Frances Sophia Hord was a little difficult to get along with and Gabriel liked being away from her. This isn't the Gabriel Gov. of KY....

I have records for the Slaughter family in VA also. Robert b 1671 has son Robert b 1702. This second Robert has a son William, who married Catherine Zimmerman. They have a son Gabriel, but here my records differ from yours. I have this Gabriel married to Ms. Crane, and no data on descendants.
I do have another Gabriel in the family tree who commanded a regiment at New Orleans (1815) and later became governor of KY. Could there be a mixup between the Gabriels??
Garey Slaughter

Would you care to trade more detailed information about this branch of the Slaughter family via email? I have no data after this Gabriel and would love to trace this branch out to present day. If you have access to court records, you have more reliable sources than I do. My information (for example, that Gabriel was married to Ms. Crane) comes from library books, which can be inaccurate and/or incomplete at times.
I also have much additional data on other branches of the Slaughter family from VA, which I would be happy to share.
Garey Slaugter
Martinez CAL
uppslau@pacbell.net
By this time, you must have met Michael T. Slaughter, the recognized authority of the Slaughter lines. Therefore, you
probably know that Jacob Slaughter, Jr. was the son of the immigrant, Jacob Schlotterer, who arrived in Phildelphia on the Chesterfield in 1749. With him were three of his brothers, Mathias, Martin and Hans(or Johan)Conrad. They anglicized their surname to Slaughter that 1st generation in this country. I, too, am descended from Barbara Ellen Slaughter and Jacob Strickler. Please let me know your lineage from Barbara down to you. Cousin Iris

Jacob Slaughter, Jr. and SArah Brooks

Jacob Slaughter, JR. was the son of Jacob Slaughter ( Schlotterer), who came with his brothers on the Chestefield from Rotterdam via England. There were 255 Wuertembergers on that ship. His brothers were Martin, Mathias and Johan Conrad Schlotterer. Jacob and Martin moved to NC and the name became anglicized to Slaughter. Jacob, Jr. married Sarah Brooks and moved to Sullivan Co., TN. His sister, Lanier(AKA Delaney)Slaughter married Martin's son, John Jacob Slaughter, and they moved to Sullivan Co., TN. John Jacob dropped his 1st name and was also known as Jacob Slaughter. Confusing for the people searching for the correct Jacob Slaughter. My Jacob and Sarah had a daughter, Barbara Ellen, who married Jacob Strickler--my 3rd great grandparents. Does anybody know who were the parents of Sarah (Brooks) Slaughter? By the way, Schlotterers came from Bodelshausen, which was in Baden (now Germany).
Slaughters in California 1920's and 30's

I try to repost this message every 6 months or so. I've had it up since 2004 but have found very little information since then. If anyone has any information on the people/family listed below, please contact me at treym99@yahoo.com
We are very interested to know what happened to William Lonnie Slaughter as he seems to have disappeared after 1930's.

Trying to find any information on the family of Slaughters that lived in Santa Monica/Malibu/Los Angeles/San Diego in the 1920's and 30's. I have posted several messages on this subject but the new info keeps coming up. Here is what I know.

Samuel Slaughter and Mintie Slaughter had 4 sons born in Oklahoma.

Samuel was a heavy drinker and was in a Los Angeles Jail on census during 1920. Was killed by a car in 1935.

Mintie's maiden name was Smith.

Son's in order of birth:

Mordicai (appears on 1 census record pre-1900)

Samuel Theodore (went by Ted. Had a real estate office in Reseda, found many advertisements and property listings in the database.

William Lynn (nickname was Skeets. Born in 1898, Died 1973. Lived at home with Samuel and Minntie on 1930 census. The family kept in touch with Lynn but thats all we know.

William Lonnie (went by Lonnie) (this is the man we are looking for). Born in or around 1900. In the Navy in 1920 aboard the USS Idaho in San Pedro. Was married to (Ida or Oda) Pearl Mason and had a daughter named Helen (see info below for Helen) in 1924. He also had a son named William Lonnie Slaughter Jr with Deliah Fern VanSant in 1928. We have pictures of him in the navy from the 20's and 30s. He was rumored to be a Los Angeles Policeman (motorcycle perhaps) in 1924. Sometime after 1935 he had another wife (Harriett) and a daughter (Theresa, Teresa or Teressa). We can find no military records (using national archives requests), no birth or death records for him, harriet or theresa, no social security information on any of them either. William Lonnie lived in San Diego in 1930 with Pearl and Helen. He was working as a mechanic and listed as a veteran of WW on the census (1930).

Helen Virginia Slaughter born 1924, died 1961 San Francisco. Ran away as a teenager to Manilla. Became a prostitute. Migrated to Hawaii around 1940, ended up in San Francisco in 1943. Family members were in touch with her at that time. She was a prostitute, "engaged" to a man with last name Pita or Pitta who owned or ran a "black & tan" night club possibly called the Polar Bear Club in Oakland. Pita/Pitta's family supposedly owned a coffee plantation in Columbia. We just found the birth and death records for Helen and are awaiting the hard copies to get more info on her (as of the date of this message). Update: these documents provided no further info. I have helens address at time of death but the owner of the building said it was too long ago to still have anything there. No one knows what happened to her belongings.

Harriett and Theresa Slaughter: We have no further info on these 2 names. All we have are 3 pictures, date unknown with their names on the back and the note "Teresa Slaughter, Lonnie's daughter" on the back of one. They were taken at a fishing cabin, whereabouts unknown, year unknown.

If this information relates to anyone out there, please write me at treym99@yahoo.com. Please include Slaughter Family Information in the subject so that I don't delete it as junk. We have been looking for many years for info after 1930 for William Lonnie Slaughter and his family.

Thanks for the info, but it is a little confusing as I don't know which direction you are moving (up or down the line). If you put in s/o for 'son of', I would be able to follow your post better. As it is, I only share one person with you and cannot tell who is the son and who is the father.

Thanks.
