I remeber him taking me as a child to vist his sister who lived in Silver Lake. I believe her name was Jenny. I recall I had a hard time understanding her because of her broque. I would love to chat with all that are here because of Rachel and James voyage accross the sea. I think that they had 12 or 13 children....what a legacy....

Thanx for the post. If my research is correct, the Tabitha Slaven Duncan that is related to my family was 2 years old, in 1880, when she lived in Dist 2, of Scott, Tennessee with her parents, Jefferson and Barzilla Slaven, and her siblings, Absolom, Rachel E., Emanual, and Sarah. There was also a Slade Slaven, aged 30 living with them. Next door to them lived, Elizabeth Slaven, at age 67, Ale Slaven at 21, and a William J. Slaven at 7.

I have Tabitha's birth and death dates as 3 Feb 1878/29 Oct 1966 respectively.

Here is her obit:

DUNCAN, TABITHA SLAVEN - was born February 3, 1878, deceased this life October 29, 1966 at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 26 days. She was married to OLIVER DUNCAN, and to this union was born 8 children, her husband and 4 children preceded her in death. She professed a hope in Christ at an early age, and joined the Old Otter Creek Church. She later took her membership to Second Otter Creek Church, where she remained a faithful Christian until death. Her prayers were always for her children and loved ones. She was a very devoted mother and grandmother. She leaves to mourn her passing, 6 Children, 5 Boys, EUEL SLAVEN, ALE DUNCAN and JAMES DUNCAN of Strunk, Ky., JEFFERSON DUNCAN of Winfield, Tenn., EZRA SLAVEN of Pine Knot, Ky.; 1 Daughter, FLODA BLEVINS of Cincinnati, Ohio; 61 grandchildren, 135 great-grandchildren, 4 great?great?grandchildren and a host of friends. We feel our loss is her eternal gain in Heaven. (Source: West Union Association of United Baptists Minutes, 1967, p12-13)

Additionally:

I also have census records that indicate that Tabitha lived in Dist 8 of Scott, TN in 1900. It is difficult to read, but I make out, Jefferson, Barzilla, Tabitha, James H., with grandson, Ewell and grandson, Ezra. It looks as though there may be another person living in the house, but it is impossible to read.

Tabitha's father, Jefferson, was the son of Absolom Slaven. Absolom had a brother, James R. Slaven.

James R. Slaven is my husband's direct line. James had a son John Slaven (known as Moccasin John). Moccasin John had a son named John Alvis Slaven. John Alvis married twice, first to Matilda Smith, and their children were Ewell, Ora, Florence, Mitchell, Letha, John Quincy, Charlie William, Francis, Luther and Arthur. Matilda died in 1913. John Alvis next married Sarah Elizabeth Clark. To the best of my knowledge, their children were, Cassie, Flora, Maggie, Leonard, Nobel, Nova and Viola.

Florence Slaven, daughter of John Alvis and Matilda Smith is my husband's direct line.

Absolom and James Slaven's father was Richard Harve Slavey/Slaven.

To my knowledge, this line has not be traced back any further than Richard Harve Slavey/Slaven.

Additionally, there is no record that I have found that indicates that "Harve" was Richard Slaven's middle name. I only add it here, as it seems to be the 'name that signifies' the furthest back of of this line.

I have several pictures of these Slavens.

I hope I've been helpful.
Ezra had a brother named Ewell Slaven but he also had several other brothers and sisters that were Duncans. Ewell was supposed to have had two sons (Luther)and Maynard also a daugther named Mary.

This post is a follow-up to my 25 Jan 2008 8:03 PM reply to NBenton in this thread...

According to 1900 census records John Alvis was born in December of 1868J. I understand his tombstone shows his birth date as June
27, 1857.

To my knowledge, John Alvis Slaven was only married twice. His first marriage was to Matilda Mae Smith. They were my husband's ggrandparents. Matilda died 24 Aug 1913.

I believe the date of birth of John Alvis and Matilda Mae Smith's first born child was 16 Apr 1888, and their last child was born about 1910. I believe John Alvis and Matilda had 11 children, 9 of whom my husband remembers as a child, or remembers from stories his mother and grandmother told him through the years.

John Alvis married his second wife, Sarah Elizabeth Clark, and I believe their first child was born about 1915. At the time of his death in 1937, he was still married to Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie", according to his death certificate, and personal family information.

Could you provide me with your sources that indicate John Alvis Slaven married Rhoda Slaven and/or Mary Musgrove? I simply do not see how it is possible.

Great to hear from you from Australia....as I sit in Hampshire South East England
I wonder if we have any direct links ...
I am not very clued up on my familt tree but I never meet anyone else with my maiden name so it is unusual. My Father's name was Patrick William Slaven born 1917 but died in 1984... he had a brother Phil and a sister my Aunty Kathleen... all gone now though.
Their parents were Albert and Lilian.
The roots were celtic ... Roman Catholic and Irish.... with a 'feed in' of Welsh...
Do you have any clear Celtic roots?
Thanks for contacting !
Jane

Old Family Photos

The Thomas Oscar Midkiff family has access to a photo album that once belonged to Martha Ann Midkiff White. Included in this old album are photos made in Nashville, Tennessee, Sherman and Fort Worth, Texas. Some photos have no identifying place on them. These photos could easily include family members whose last names might possibly be Midkiff, Hamilton, Jennings, Davenport, White, Cole, Slaven and other branches of the extended Midkiff family as well as friends. We have posted these old tintypes and photos on our Midkiff Family website provided by Miriam Robbins Midkiff at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kidmiff/midkiffphot...
To view these old photos please click on the link. If you can identify any of the people in the photos, please let us know. We will be happy to send you a copy of any photo you would like and are able to identify. Our purpose is to put names with faces as much as is possible after so many years. Your help in this regard will be greatly appreciated.
Martha Ann (Mattie) Midkiff attended Ward-Belmont School for Young Ladies in Nashville, Tennessee around 1890-1892. Included in her album were many photos of young women whom we presume were her schoolmates at Ward-Belmont. These classmate photos are not included on the Midkiff website.
Hi Lorie,
I cannot beleive I actually received a response. I am so excited! My brother and I were adopted in Texas in 1949; I also found a sister in Florida who was adopted in 1947. All three of us have birth/adoption certificates listing Lacy Johnson Slaven, Jr. as our birth father. We would like some general information, amybe a picture. We are just curious, not wanting to make any trouble for the family or anything. I hope you understand and feel comfortable with the request.
Thanks for answering, even if that is all I ever get. My mom got a letter in 1992 from a lady who said she was Lacy's sister-in-law. Ray, my brother and I were to send photos, etc to her but when the time came the envelope was lost so no info could be sent. Could this have been your mom? Ok, I am rambling so I'll quit. Thanks again.
Cathy

My husband's grandmother was a Slaven. Her name was Florence Slaven, and she had a brother named Charlie William Slaven. My husband always referred to him as "Uncle Bill". I have recently found out that he settled in Terre Haute, IN., as did another brother, Quince. Their father was John Alvis and their mother was Matilda Mae Smith. Other siblings of theirs were Ora, Mitchell, "Letha", Quince, Ewell, Luther, and if my research is correct, a Francis and an Arthur. My husband does not remember a Francis or an Arthur, but we are certain about the other siblings. Matilda died in 1913, and John married again. I am searching for any family ancestry that might be available, and pictures if any exist! My husband and I recently found a son of Charlie William Slaven, and we are currently contacting he and his wife through email. Any information anyone might have would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you. Sharon Meadows
Hi Jan----T.J. Edwards and Lucinda Slavens are my ggg-grandparents. I have no proof, but from YEARS of researching and piecing together disparate bits of information, I believe that the information below is correct. Again, this is not proven:

Father --John Slavens born betw 1800-1810 in Arkansas; died after 1845.
(mother unknown)

Children:
Neoma F. Slavens; born abt. 1833; married George W. Sheek 23 Sep 1855 at McLennan Co., TX
Susan Slavens; born 22 Nov 1836 at Sevier Co., AR; married Tillman Barnabus Burch 1 Jun 1854 at McLennan Co., TX; died 22 Dec 1918 at Capitan, Lincoln Co., NM
Elizabeth Slavens; born abt. 1838; married Andrew Jackson Edwards, son of Joseph Stanton Edwards and Susanna E. Vaughan, 23 Feb 1851 at McLennan Co., TX
Lucinda Slavens; born 1839 at Arkansas; married to Thomas Jefferson Edwards, son of Joseph Stanton Edwards and Susanna E. Vaughan, 2 Oct 1856 at McLennan Co., TX; died after 1880, probably in Erath Co., TX
Nancy Slavens; born abt 1843; married to James M. Locker 30 Jul 1856 at McLennan Co.,TX
John Slavens; born 1845 at Arkansas
Rollin Slavens; born 1846 at Arkansas; married Virginia Edwards, daughter of Joseph Stanton Edwards and Susanna E. Vaughan, 25 Oct 1863 at McLennan Co., TX

This has been a very difficult line to work on---that's as far as I've gotten. I think the Slavens must have lived in close proximity to the Edwards, who moved to Milam CO., TX at the end of the 1840s. They settled near what is now Crawford, TX, and this became McLennan Co., in 1850. The Edwards ranch was 1280 acres and was just north of present day Crawford. I have visited the property and all surrounding cemeteries and have found no Slavens (all spelling variants) or Edwards graves. I also have a photo of Lucinda and T.J. Edwards (attached). Hope all this helps ------Mark

Re: Michael and Mary Slaven

Dear Jason

I joined Ancestry.co.uk only recently as a member as I kept buying vouchers and units and going to library etc. I also have joined Genes Reunited but was quite disappointed as I was getting “hot matches” for names in our tree, but with no further details, mostly not even exact date or place of birth. Imagine my huge surprise to find the thread of SLAVEN started by Jean Todd and yourself. I’m amazed, I have found you both! You are related to us (well, to my husband really!).

Matilda Slaven married Benjamin Thompson on 25.12.1900 in Toxteth Park (I’ve got a fotocopy of the marriage certificate). They had 7 children (Benjamin, Arthur, Thomas, another son, two daughters and the last son, Michael George. Michael George Thompson is the late father of my husband Kenneth George Thompson (only child).

So Matilda Slaven is “our” grandmother. As you are saying she is your great great grandmother I believe you must be a descendant from one of the older children as Michael George was the youngest by quite a bit. Unfortunately we did not have much material in our possession and trying to trace Michael George Thompson’s siblings has been pretty fruitless. So would you please enlighten us and share your information with us? A shame a didn’t stumble over your address a couple of days/weeks earlier, as it just was my husbands birthday and your information would just have been such a smashing present.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Kerstin Thompson
John Slaven 1860 Hannibal, Missouri census

I am looking for information about John Slaven. He was listed in the 1860 Third Ward, Hannibal, Missouri census as living with Michael and Rosa Quinlan family. He is listed as a 28 year old common laborer from Ireland. I am trying to find if he was related to the Quinlan family. This census is the only document that shows a connection between John Slaven and this Quinlan family whom I am researching. I have no further information on John Slaven. Michael Quinlan came from Tipperary, Ireland in the early 1850s to Newburg, New York. The Quinlan family came to Hannibal between 1857-1859. They moved to Monroe County, Missouri before 1862 and Audrain County, Missouri about 1885.

Elizabeth Stuart of Scotland m. John Slaven of Ireland 1748 Virginia

I am a ggggg grandson of Elizabeth Stuart and John Slaven. I am seeking info on Elizabeth's family. Most posted genealogies list her father as Daniel Stuart of Scotland and stop there. Some, however go further listing Daniel as a son of John Stuart II and grandson of John Stuart I. I have not been able to locate the source which links Daniel with John I and II. Any help sorting this out would be greatly appreciated. On a related manner, John Slaven II, son of Elizabeth Stuart and John Slaven also married an Elizabeth. Was she a Warwick or a Hodge? Also, hello to all descendants of John and Elizabeth.- Joe Denton, Brooklyn, MI.
