Chief locations of the early Sladdens, Sladdings, Slaydens, Slaytons, and Slatons John Slayton : Saturday, July 10, 1999
I remember my grandfather always telling me that the Slayton family name was English. I am half English and half Irish with the exception of two German lines. The early family surname Slayton with its various spellings was concentrated in England in three primary locations. First, the Sladding, Slayden, Slayton spellings are seen in Lancashire and West Riding of Yorkshire. Second, the Slodden, Sladden, and Sladen are seen in Kent, England and later went into Wales and Australia in the late 1700's and into United States and Canada in the middle to late 1800's. Third, the Slayden, Slayton and Slaton surname is seen in South Hampshire region. There are other little dots of the various spellings of the surname in England but not as concentrated as these three areas. It should be noted that England held these people until late 1600's when John Sladding probably from Lancashire/Yorkshire region came to the United States colonies to Hanover County, Virginia; Thomas Slaton came from Sandwich, Kent, England to Braintree, Massachusetts; and when the Kent, England bursted the seams and several Sladdens entering Wales and Australia in the late 1700's. It not until middle 1800's does any variation of spelling is seen in Scotland or Ireland.
