Frank Alonzo and Amanda Jane Slayton

I am still looking for anyone related to this side of my family. My grandmother was Amanda Jane Vandiver. Apparently she was from the Mena, Arkansas area. William B. Vandiver was her father but no one can recall her mother's name other than she went by the name "Tiny". Both William B. and "Tiny" had some Cherokee Indian blood, but I have not even started to research that aspect.

According to my Aunt Edith (the oldest daughter of Amanda Jane Vandiver Slayton), her grandfather, William B. Vandiver had 2 brothers, Olan and Matt. Olan had 1 son, Jack, (as best she can remember) and lived in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. Matt had a son, Benny (called Buddy) and a daughter Annie. In addition he also had a sister, Lela Vandiver, who married Horace Luttrell. They had sons Carroll, Robert and Edwin and a daughter Jessie. Carroll Luttrell had a son named Elvis. My Aunt has old photos of Benny (Buddy) and Jack Vandiver.

My Aunt also recalls that one time 2 men came to their home in Waskom, Texas to offer my grandmother some land related to her Cherokee heritage. Any help on this would also be appreciated.

I would appreciate any help.

Susan Olson
Clara's parents were Ira Slayton, abt. 1882 and Martha Elizabeth Pace, abt. 1882. My great great grandparents were Joseph Eli Hufstedler, b. 3/6/1860 and Margaret Lemmons,b. 2/1/1845. I have not gotten any further than Ira. I am reseaching Hufstedler, Slayton, Lemmons, Teel, Davie, and Caraker. I have started a family tree on Ancestry.com called Roesslein/Hufstedler Family Tree.

Please contact me, at cslayton19@charter.net.

I find no evidence to suggest that the certificate ascribed to be that of Albert H Slayton is correct.

1. There was no noticeable presence of Slaytons in Rensselaer co as early as 1855, but there were (scottish) Houstons. This is not conclusive, but most of the Slaytons in NY state 1850-1860 are somewhat accounted for.

2. There was a later Albert H b 1872 who was a son of Thomas J & Lydia HEUSTIS, very similar names to James & Lucy, but no cigar, unless Albert H was really padding his age.

3. There were Harrisons in Rensselaer.

If there are any direct male descendants, we have a DNA sampling from several lines, including the Slaytons who were known to live in W NY. This requires a male Slayton from male Slaytons.

Posted on our research board:
----"AGrooms" writes: I just received a death certificate for Albert Harrison Slayton, b. Troy, NY 1855 which lists parents as James Slayton and Lucy Houston----

A H mar Elizabeth and she gives NY b and GERMAN parents. The family below looks like someone who descends from Chauncey #88 or poss up to Reuben #17, but I do not find him in AWS. The initial is clearly "N" in the 1930 census.

Remember the birthplace is before the "Cen" not the state where the census was taken.

Slayton A H postmaster 1910 NY Cen Stoddard 182 01B 3wd Bemis MO 1855 m1886 h Eliz fNY mNY
s A
Slayton Elizabeth 3ch 1910 IL Cen Stoddard 182 01B Day Ave MO 1865 m1886 w A H fMO mKY
Slayton Chauncey 1910 MO Cen Stoddard 182 01B MO 1889 s A H

Slayton A H ? The only James in AWS who is even close to be a potential father, is listed as dying 1856 , no marriage, no children. Of course, this James may have reversed a given name.

It is still possible that this is a STAYTON. Postmaster should make this fairly easy to confirm.

Well I did not write this on this board. I have no records of anyone with these names with any connection to the Slaytons who settled in Chautauqua NY, so are there any locations for these people, in census, other than the one I have below?

I find A H in 1910 Stoddard MO, and have posted a query on the Myfamily site to the Northern Slayton researchers, no one has yet identified this Albert Harrison. I have no reason to question his existence, but he does not appear in Asa Slayton's rather compendious and complete survey of the descendants of Thomas & Hannah.

There were plenty of NYers who used a similar name to SLAYTON who were immigrants, but the name Chauncey is a flag to those of us who are searching these records. Please transcribe the contents of the death record as to dates and names.

Here is the census:
Slayton	A H postmaster NY 1855	m1886 h Eliz fNY mNY
Slayton	Elizabeth 3ch IL 1865	m1886 w A H f
MO mKY
Slayton	Chauncey MO 1889 s A

It is still possible that this is a STAYTON.
The Chauncey Slayton I am referring to is the son of Albert Harrison Slayton who is the son of James Slayton and Lucy Houston according to Albert's death certificate. You told me in 2002 when I wrote the first message that as far as you were concerned they weren't related to the Slayton's and their name had to be something different in your opinion.

Asa Walker Slayton did not actually track this man from anywhere. Thomas "Slayton" arrived in Massachusetts as a boy. AWS suggested that there was a LEIGHTON family in Berwick-upon-Tweed, who may have shipped him off, so this story suggests that the SLAYTON name is either an error or an attempt to disconnect this boy from antecedents, but none of this is proved, it is anecdotal. The boy almost certainly arrived "from" Liverpool. If he gave his name as Thomas LEIGHTON it would be the phonetic equivalent. This story holds some water because there are no records in Berwick-upon-Tweed that suggest that a SLADEN or SLAYTON ever lived there.

There are as yet no DNA samples from English or Scottish Slaytons that I know of, that can be compared to any from the Massachusetts line, of which there is one sample in an existing DNA Project. An English descendant of the Kentish SLADENS refuses to participate, and there are no males left from the Lancashire SLADENS to test.

My guess would be that this is Mary Ida, dau of William Alexander Slaton, found in 1880 Crockett, ed 8 page 250D.

This is a common name reversal. I do not have this marriage recorded in my research, but this is probably her, so I can only she her suspected progenitors.

Check out the family at this link:
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=cslayto...

Can someone please clarify who these people are? The Chauncey Slaytons in Asa's book did not produce any of these people, so I am confused as to whether these are descendants of Thomas & Hannah of MA.

If Asa overlooked these people, please let us know a line.

The "Northern Slatyon" or "Cabin Boy" line, descending from Thomas Slayton, born in 1692, and arriving in Boston in 1690 are a different blood line than the Slaytons from Kent.

Posted, just for the record......

Well, Asa W Slayton was an interesting fellow from Michigan, who towards the end of his life, published a book around 1895 titled "The History of the Slaytons" He did quite a bit of research of the family, from its beginnings in Boston in 1690 up to his time. His research was both by anecdotal reports from oral traditions of the family as well as documentable evidence.

It is considered to be the definative history of this branch of the Slayton family. This branch is know by various folks as the "Cabin Boy Branch" , the Northern Branch, and the Thomas and Hannah Branch.

There are other branches, not related by blood that have similar spellings and/or pronouncation.

Hmmmmm. I share a similar line, diverging from yours in the 5th generation. A W Slayton tracked the family back to Thomas 1, born in 1682 and arriving in Boston from Berrick-on-Tweed in 1690. Beyond that, others have erred by mixing the "Scotland" /Cabin Boy branch with the ancestors of the, what I call, Southern Branch in the US whose ancestors are not related by blood to our branch (See Clinton Slayton's DNA research), but rather are deduced to have come from the Kent area in England

I would be curious if you could identify the family Thomas the first was born to in the Tweed River family in 1682, what their name was, and so forth.

As always, you are correct. To all- when in doubt always assume Clinton is right.

Asa Slayton for all we know, may have "filled in the blanks" wrong. But he did, it appears, make a very great effort to make his guesses educated ones. Filling in blanks 200 years after the fact---well, it is a challenge. In his book, he does offer the thought process he used in his deductions, there printed to be read by all who may be interested to review.

Descendants of William and Abraham Sladding, etc

From Clinton Slayton and Julia O Mitchel:
Re: various versions of W John Slayton's books with names similar to the subject headings

We have examined the papers of Richard W Slatten at the Library of Virginia and consulted with librarians at the Virginia Historical Society, and came to the following conclusions:

there are no publicly available source documents that back up the dates and birthplaces assigned by W John Slayton in any of the first three generations presented in his books, usually published as Volume II;

there are no publicly available source documents that back up a marriage of William Slaton (various spellings) to Mary RODES, and Edgar MacDonald states in writing that he never published anything about such a marriage;

the version of W John's book donated to the L of VA by Edgar MacDonald shows John Slatton (d ca 1814) as a son of Abraham. This conjecture may have been based on musings by Richard Slatten in one private correspondence that this was a possibility. But this suspected John appears ONLY in a 1766 Albemarle co VA document regarding a man name William who is clearly an older man, considering the context of the document. It is anybody's guess as to the relationship between this John and either William or Abraham, but a more prudent way to present this would be to start with John, and stick with the only provable family record, the orphan Tyre Slatton left by Abraham.

The books published by W John Slayton as "Volume I" may contain only records and are thus can be somewhat useful as a collection, however, the sbove statements show that W John Slayton's Volume II "books" were sold or distributed in various versions to fit the ephemeral theory in W John's head at the time. As such, they do not represent an accurate family picture, cannot and should not be used as documented source material. Unfortunately, under pseudonyms, this material was posted onto the Internet and has been copied and reposted by trusting souls.

This does not suggest that all the material in W John's books is made up, because a considerable amount was supplied by myself, George R Slayton, Herman Slaton, and others. Howver, the list of issue ascribed to William and Mary (RODES) gives the impression of certainty and completion, but is not based on anything that W John Slayton cares to cite. The problem is that the "root" information shows a degree of detail that is not available in any format that we were able to find in Virginia, which suggests that W John is in possession of birth or baptism records, or family records such as a Bible, that are unknown to any research facility in Virginia and are not cataloged in LDS or other research libraries. The counties (parishes) that are shown in W John's earliest records are considered "Burned" counties for such records as St Paul's in Hanover co and Fredericksville in Albermarle, where W John shows birth dates and places around and before 1750.

We have requested the sources for these dates and places from W John Slayton in the past, with no response. This material is, in our opinion, hopelessly compromised.

DNA update

From Clinton:
The DNA Project has 13 results: 12 are 43-marker tests, one is a 12-marker. It is established that George Washington Slaten of Monroe co TN (b ca 1800 SC), Loving Slaten (b ca 1805 SC) and Richard Slaton (b ca 1832), who is a known descendant of George Slaton of Jackson co GA (b 1839), and Wade Slaton of DeKalb co AL (b ca 1805 SC), a strongly suspected descendant of Capt John Slaten (d 189 E TN), all share a common paternal ancestor, through descendants of each line, and that Wade of Morgan co AL (b 1852 d 1939) is closely related. These are all strongly suspected to descend from a William Slading who appears in Albemarle co VA in 1766, through suspected sons or grandsons, John, George and Major. One other individual who shares this has an earliest descendant named Stephen Decatur Slaton who lived in White co AR. These men are all cousins, acc to current DNA theory, all except one is over 97% matches, with three at 100%.

Also, a baseline for descendants of Arthur & Rachel Slayden of VA is established with 4 results of descendants from that line, and a descendant of Benjamin Slaton of Franklin/Banks co GA is a member of this group. Benjamin was not proven member of this group through extant documents.

One descendant from Thomas & Hannah of Mass is also represented. We need more from this group.

Samples are being sought from native English lines and one is expected before August.

The other lineages are not clear since they vary from those mentioned above and are only single samples.
As a corrective to all above:

John Sladden the immigrant is not a proven progenitor of anyone.

Arthur & Rachel have descendants whose DNA does NOT match suspected descendants of William (me). No male descendants of Abraham have been found to test.

Neither MUIRFIELD or LAWSON are proven spouse maiden names for Rachel.

It sure would help if you had some dates and places for the important events (birth, marriage, death etc.) and folks could look up their files and check if they have anything - or if your data can help them.

From your info there may be some connection to the mid-NY state area as there are some prominent Slayton and Cleveland families.
