Yes, I've been looking for about the last 20 years for Miles' parents... He is one of my brickwalls... And I don't believe that they will ever be known if they haven't been found by now...unfortunately!

Cindy: Thanks for your reply to my query regarding Miles Austin, 1800-VA - 1875-Franklin Co., VA. After searching 30 years for his parents and birthplace, I have decided to give up on ever finding that information. In all the censuses of him and his children (except one) they state he was born in VA and this I believe. On one 1880 VA Census, his son Joseph Austin (1835) listed his father as born in Ireland and this is probably what caused some to think he was from Ireland. The other records on him do not substantuate the Ireland theory. Happy Hunting, Ruth M. Austin

Just trolling around on the internet and just now found where you responded to a message of mine.

Are you going to be at the Austin Reunion tomorrow in Franklin Co. at the Ruritan Club?

I still have not found anything further on Miles Austin, unfortunately. I have had a couple of researchers tell me he and 2 other brothers came from Ireland, but have never seen anything that backs up that story.

Miles is like another family line I'm researching...it's like an alien spaceship just dropped them off...

Personally I do not believe that Miles was born in Ireland - his father or grandfather may have been...but for some reason my gut tells me that Miles wasn't.

And I have found no further information regarding Miles' wife, Nancy Sledd. Some sources say she was born in Powhatan and others Louisa (counties) in VA. I believe that is the most logical place to start looking for info regarding Miles and then out to the counties surrounding Louisa and Powhatan.

I was looking into the same thing. I recently found out that there is a Sledd family in Indianapolis. I am trying to find out how long they have been there and what is their origin.

Interestingly, our last name is more common than I thought and has English (cornish) roots.

Dear Cindy: My late husband Elba Branscomb Austin 1912-2002 descended from Miles Austin & Nancy Sledd through their youngest son Joseph Austin and Rosanna Smith of Franklin Co., VA and the Joseph & Rosanna's son John Austin & Augusta King Of Floyd Co., VA & Franklin Co., VA. then John & Augusta's son Jada Arden Austin & Sena Willie-Belle (Austin) Austin were my late husband's parents. As his mother's maiden name was also Austin, I am researching both lines. I would like very much to find out the names of Miles Austin's parents and/or where he came from before marrying Nancy Sledd in Campbell Co., VA in 1821. I found one record of a Miles Austin that was in the war of 1812 in York Co., VA, but have never been able to verify if they are one and the same. Perhaps we could exchange information some time when it is convenient for us both. In my Sledd tree I have a James Howard Sledd born in Clarksville, Va on Sept. 6,1855.He died in 1921 in Forest City, Ark. He married Luna Postal Capers on Oct. 6, 1890.
I show two children: 1)Hunter Capers Sledd whom I knew personally and 2) James Howard Sledd. I have his year of birth as 1896 ?? If you think this might be your James Howard Sledd, I will be happy to provide more information on the family.

I'm researching family information for my granddaughter - on her father's side. Her paternal GG Grandmother's name was Georgie Catherine Sledd... I believe she was born in 1897, I have no further information (death, parents, etc). She was married to Irvin Jones and had at least one son, Irvin Jones, Jr. I would like to find more information if possible. Any help would be appreciated. FYI: the Jones family is from Hanover, VA so I assume the Sledd family I am looking for was either "from" there or moved there before 1920.

I am looking for the parents of Jemima Sledd. I think her father may have been named John as it looks like a John Sledd signed her marriage liscense. She married Andrew Thompson. I think she was born about 1805 because of her age in a later cencus. She had a daughter Missouri Ellen Thompson who married Robert Thompson.

I am responding for Sherry...We don't have information on any of Dodman and Jemimia Wilkersons children except Jemima who married an Andrew Thompson of Campbell Co VA , lived in Floyd and Pulaski Co..and died in Tn.
They had two children ..Missouri and Zachary Samuel.

Saw your posting was was wondering if maybe you could help. I have a Dodman Sledd who married a Jemima Wilkerson/Wilkinson. They are the supposed parents of Nancy Sledd b. 1805, Louisa Co., VA.

Nancy Sledd is my 4th great grandmother. She was married to Miles Austin.

This is all the info I have on Nancy, but would definitely like to know more. I have more history on the Austin's. Any leads you could give me would be greatly appreciated!

It takes a while for the InterneTree to load but after it finishes parsing my data just click on any name box then hit your "F" key. A search screen will come up and you can find John Sledd (1760) easily then. Click his box and his children will show to the left. As you will see I didn't have your Great-grandfather's middle name, just his middle initial. I would be interested in your data also. I have some info about him from a descendant of Robert N. Sledd if you're interested.

Sled's in Canada came from England and settled in Western Canada until 1930's. They moved to Ontario at this time. I have observed records of Sled in USA ,but this message board is for Sledd. Thanks

Well I have found out that my great grandfather was Samuel G. Sledd. He was in Marshall KY and married M. Culp. HIs father was possibly James Washington Sledd. The mystery is now if Jordan Sledd was his father. Jordan married Amanda in VA. Does anyone have any other information about Jordan Sledd?

If your parents are Charles V. Milburn and Alma W. Sledd, your great grandfather, William James Fore Sledd, and my great grandfather, Robert Henry Sledd, are brothers. I have the direct line traced back to John Sledd b.1760 and married to Sarah Vaughn. John is the father of James V. Sledd. I have seen some reports that mistakenly say that Dodmon was James V. Sledd's father. I would appreciate any information you may have about the family, especially in John Sledd's era and back. I have uncomfirmed information that John Sledd's father is Joshua Sledd and his mother is Grace-last name not known.

My maternal great grandmother was Luida Davis daughter of Geo. W. Davis (1830-1867). She and husband Wm. Ja. Fore Sledd lived in Powhatan Co. he and my grandfather drove veggies to Richmond c. 1900 to various distributors. Churchill is in the SW area of the city and Powhatan is West of there c. 25 mi. .... I have very little on the Davis line but would like to share and hope to trace Geo. W's line further back. He married Mary Eliz. Russell daughter of Ananias Russell who was b. 1812.
