I just reread this message and realized that I have Nancys last name as Hanner. I was told that she passed away on the trip from PA. It has also been said that Jacob and someone else went back years later to try to find where they had buried her. Under a tree along the carriage route so they said.. According to family stories, things had changed so much that they could not identify the place and were forced to give up. I have a lot of info on the Sliders. I have been out of touch for a few years, but I am back on line and things are even easier to find now then they were before.

The only Slider information I have is the following. I would also like to find out a little more on this family.
Nathan Slider married my great grandmother Dolores Angeline Ater Loudenslager after my great grandfather Charles Green Loudenslager died. They got married sometime around 1900 and lived in Wetzel County WV. They had 5 children---4 boys and one girl:
James born about 1900, Melvin born 1906 and died 1982, Owen born 1909 DOD unknown, George born 1913 and died between 1987 and 1991., and Mary (who married a Crupe and lived in Indiana was born about 1917 and died in the 1990's.
I know some of the Slider family were from Calhoun Co, WV and maybe Wirt Co WV.My mom remembered visiting her grandma and Nate in Calhoun Co one time.
I know that isn't much but that is all I have. Maybe there will be a name you reconize. You may e-mail me privately if this sounds like your family.
Thanks Carol

I am also curious if you ever found Vernon Murray (possibly in NY) as he never answered my posts, or yours either I don't think.
My address is: bhaines@tje1.com (That's a one, not an "ell). There used to be a silver vessel that my Uncle Owen Slider said came from Montecello, a "gift" from Jefferson. We always laughed & said Joseph ripped it off. LOL. Don't know what became of it. There was also a slave that came North & lived with the Slider's, & is buried in the graveyard. Some say he was from Montecello. I don't know. I saw the picture of young Joseph, & I found a cousin in Florida that is his GGGrandson & correspond with him regularly.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Becci

Thanks Becci, I had hoped when I read your messages that there might be a relationship but I was not absolutely certain.
There is a picture of Joseph very young on the Calhoun Co. web site under the Civil War soldiers. The one that I have is when he is much older. I will see if I can send you the computer copies if you will send me your e-mail address. The pictures are in a group that hold other family members of mine. But you will be able to identify those who are Sliders
from the other family side. I never heard that the Sliders were German. In fact if that is true it may be easier to find them.
Your area of Maryland has an historic German settlement I believe that was developed in conjunction with the Pa. area.
Perhaps we should look there. I was always under the assumption that they were Irish/Scottish decent. I have tried to see if I could find there names at the Monticello worker site but that is not available over the internet. I was told that Jefferson and his architects went to Europe to obtain craftsmen, joiners, masons etc. He paid th have them come to America in return they worked for him on Monticello. I thought perhaps that might be how they came to America. Only another guess.

I too am having difficulty in finding Joseph's line. After Montecello, the family must have all come to Allegany County, Md. John Joseph, a brother, married Rachel Elbin, thus creating my line.Later Jacob & Soloman, another brother, went on to your area. This was told by my Great Uncle, who was born in 1873, & remembered the family. Joseph SLider (by family word of mouth) died in 1825. I suspect he is buried in the SLider Cemetery here in Allegany County, a;ong with his wife, who may have been a Morgan. This is where the Indian line may have come in. I don't know about the Hanner's being Indian. As for Nancy Hanner, she was born in 1813, she married Jacob in Allegany County, & it is said that she was from nearby Pennsylvania. She died Jan. 1860 in Hardin County, Ohio.If you have any info at all on the First Joseph, please contact me. It says on one of the death certs that Joseph(as father) came from Germany.

I am the Great Great grandaughter of Joseph Slider (Elizabeth Kerby) and Great Great Great Grandaughter of Jacob Slider and Nancy (Hannan? American Indian decent) I have also been told that Jacob's father Joseph was a foreman at Monticello. I have had difficulty discerning the lineage after I find the Joseph Jacob's father. I have been told through family that after Monticello was complete that Joseph and a few of his son's Jacob for one went west to Tyler Va/WVa.
During the westward trip Nancy was killed. My GG Grandfather Joseph is the son of Jacob and Nancy He settled in Hurr WVa. in Calhoun county. If anyone can assist in going backward from the Senior Joseph it would be appreciated.

See my other messages for most of these answers to your questions. As for Polish Mt. ----it is cut off from Green Ridge by the highway--- if you are coming from the East on 68-- Green Ridge would be to your left. The ridge is long & the Slider's lived nearer to Oldtown than Flintstone, but Steven moved over to Polish. the home place is in the middle of the Ridge, as for Charles--- he was William's son--- born 1857, from his first marriage to Nancy Kifer. william married Mary Twigg in Feb. of 1873. Nancy had died. His children were:
Catherine, 1851; George, 1853;Charles, 1857(there are numerous Charles' in the family) Mary, 1867; James Marshal, 1870;Peter, who was deaf; William(no date); John,(no date); from second marriage: Owen, 1873; Nancy, 1876; Hanson, 1877;Alonzo, 1879; Nettie, 188; Julia, 1883; & Frederick, 1889.

Mike,
Saw your posting on message board on Ancestry.com. I, too, am searching for info on the Slider family. My Grandmother is a Houser. Her ancestor, Daniel Houser/Howser b. 1793, VA married Statia (Tacy) Slider 7-31-1814 in Montgomery OH. He was first married to Nancy Sprague (1813.) Statia later married Jesse Austin in 1844.
Daniel and Statia's son Daniel b. 1828 in Shelby Co OH married at least 3 times-Margaret Patrick, Bethsheba Ann Burton, Mary Elizabeth Burton. Daniel and Margaret's son Jacob Houser married Mary Elizabeth Burton McMeins Housers daughter Elma McMeins. ( Mary Ellizabeth Burton married Thomas McMeins.) Do you have any more info on the Slider side of the family? I can't get past Statia.
Anything you can share is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Kelly

Slider in Upshur Co, TX ca. 1850-1900

I am trying to find any information on my maternal grandmother's family. She supposedly was born Mary Elizabeth (Molly) SLIDER in Upshur Co., TX about 1850. About 1870 she married John Thomas DUDLEY. She died in Upshur Co., TX in 1906. Information in the Upshur Co. censuses is conflicting. The 1880 census says her father was born in GA and her mother was born in Mississippi. The 1900 censue says both her mother and father were born in TN.
Any information would be appreciated. I am willing to work with other researchers on this.

Georgia Sliders

Unfortunately I don't have any additional information on the Sliders. I'm still trying to do census research in Upshur Co., TX, to see if I can get any leads. Possible names for my grandmother's, Mary Elizabeth (Molly)Slider's, father are Names (that's what the index says) Slider, Richard Slider, and Robert Slider. Molly supposedly was born in Upshur Co., TX in 1855. If this is true, I would guess Names or Richard are more likely to be her father, because they are the only Sliders shown in the AIS 1850 TX census index (they were in Upshur Co.). Richard Slider doesn't show up in the index until 1870.
In the 1880 census, Molly's father is shown as being from Georgia and her mother from Mississippi. In the 1900 census, her father and mother are both shown as born in Tennessee.
If you can offer any leads or suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Bobbie Christensen
esqbbc@aol.com

Re: Scottish SLIDERs in U.S. before 1800?

Afraid I haven't found Richard SR's parents yet but believe he was born before 1770 in Maryland.

There are a number of possible SCLEIDERs/SLIGHTERs/SLIDERs in earlier PA, MA, and NY but I've been unable to make a connection with them.

Given up looking for a Scottish connection. The SCHLEIDERs and SLIGHTER I've found seem to be Palatines. As the Palatines immigrated to both colonial U.S. and to England (some families apparently traveling through England), I think perhaps this might explain the SLIDER surname in both countries.

Favoring the Palatine theory for two main reasons.

1) In our family history the SLIDERs were described as Black Dutch. I've seen multiple definitions of this term but finally found it used to described Germans from the Black Forest region. (The Dutch here is a corruption of Deutche.)

2) There is a SLIDER family in a later Clark co., IN census who are indentified as being from Baden, Germany. That's the Palatine. Haven't found a connection between this SLIDER family and Richard SR.'s family though but wonder if there is one.

Brief summary of the Palatine immigration here btw:

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/pal/overview.shtml

Hello Penny,

This is William H. Slider ( John W. Slider, John W. Slider, Richard SR Slider). He marries an Eliza Cain in Clark County Indiana in 21 Mar 1858. He later marries a Sarah J. Sherrer 08 Sep 1881 and can be found in Bartholomew co, IN 1900 census.

I don't know how the CAIN/KANE family relates to your Hobson but I will watch for references. I will caution you that William H.'s profession in 1900 is given as a hotel keeper. His grandfather John Slider also ran a hotel/tavern in early Carr township. Given this, perhaps there is a possibility that your Jesse Hobson is a boarder?

Sandra -- Another researcher just sent me 1878 probate records for John W. SLIDER SR. (the John Slider buried in Ebeneezer Methodist Cemetery.) Margaret Whalen is listed as a daughter.

I am researching the Houser name, as my greatgrand father was Daniel B. Houser who married Emma Robe. In my searching I found a Daniel who married Statia Slider in 1814. That is all the info I have, hope it helps.
