Thank you for your reply. Yes, I'm still researching Hannah Slinkard; so far I haven't found out any info on our mutual ancestor. You must be a descendent of Sarah Angeline Slinkard Chostner - she was a sister of my great grandfather, Daniel Franklin Slinkard.

My email is semogen@gmail.com, feel free to contact me.

Sondra

Hi Hannah,

I hope you actually read this message. It has been a long time since you posted.
Unfortunatley I don't have information for you.
I am a decendant of the Kinder/Chostner clan. I named my youngest daughter after Hannah.
I too am interested in family history and try to research from time to time but I am not very good at it and have very limited time.
I would be happy to get to know you since we are related somehow through our ancestors.
After further research I have determined that the Maude Slinkard who married William Lannis Sipes was the daughter of William V. & Susan C. Slinkard. William was the son of Henry J. Slinkard born in 1804 Lincoln Co, N.C. They married Aug. 23 1885 in Greene Co., IN. William Lannes Sipes then married Susie Sipes (cousin?) July 21 1895. Census records indicate Maude was born about 1867 in Greene Co., IN and most likely died before 1895 when William married again. I have been unable to locate a death or grave record for Maude yet. I have located obituaries for William Lannis and Clyde O. Sipes there son, and neither one gives usable information about Maude.

Sondra, I had my Jacob as the son of Frederick until I found notes my grandma had wrote. She said Jacob Van Buren was an uncle to John Marshall Slinkard. Jacob Van Buren is a son of Daniel and John Marshall is a son of Jacob(1814). She also said Leo Slinkard(son of Jacob Van Buren) was a 1st cousin to John Marshall and Little Jakie(Jacob A Slinkard, son of James Emanuel) was a 1st cousin. My grandma's baby brother is still alive. I just talked to him. He said yes that Leo and Little Jakie were 1st cousins as told to him by his father. I know this is not concrete proof but. Please look at the message posted above yours, its mine. Daniel was married twice. My Jacob would be a son of the 1st wife and Jacob Van Buren would be a son of the 2nd wife. My Jacob was 25, married, and had a child by the time Jacob Van Buren was born. Daniel had died before the second Jacob was born. The 2nd wife may have thought since my Jacob was out on his own, it would be ok to name her son Jacob. Daniel was not there to object to two sons named Jacob. what do you think? How can I get a copy of the two things you mention, one by Alice Spillman and the other one?

I have a copy of the Alice Spillman book. She gave me permission to copy it to give to others before her death. If you would still like a copy, let me know. I agree with Lisa Briscoe analysis of the two Jacobs. I also have a copy of Daniel's probate which clarifies the issue. It lists Jacob as a child, first in the list. Jacob Vanburen is not listed and could not be because he was not born yet.

Lisa
I think I sent you a copy of the Slinkard book by Alice Spillman. I agree with your assessment of the two Jacobs, both sons of Daniel.

My mother worked on the Alice Spillman book mentioned earlier in the thread. I have a copy. Indeed, I sent one to Lisa some time ago. In that book Alice said it was not proven that Jacob 1814 was the son of Daniel. My mother was quite annoyed that Alice put that in the book, as my mother was sure our Jacov was a son of Daniel. I was recently in Cape, and I have a copy of the probate listing Jacob first in the list of Daniel's children. At that date, Jacob VanBuren Slinkard was not born yet. So, I believe that proves that Jacob (1814) is the son of Daniel. I can provide a copy of that document if you would like. Sorry I have been remiss in replying to your previous emails and letter.

N.C. to Indiana in 1817. The book will be available in the Daviess County Indiana area, Fort Wayne and Indiana state libraries. I have a copy of the book and will do a lookup if you want to know more information about this family.

Cheryl, yes there are many Jacobs in this family, however Daniel, 1786-1838, married to Hannah Kinder, is definitely the son of Jacob Slinkard and Catherine Crites. This is documented by Lorena Shell Eaker in her book, GERMAN SPEAKING PEOPLE WEST OF THE CATAWBA RIVER IN NC 1750-1800, and by Alice Proffer Spillman in "The Jacob Slinkard family in Missouri", plus other researchers.

Some researches say that Frederick Slinkard and Barbara Grounds (Grant) had a son named Jacob,1814-1866, but in Mrs. Spillman compilation she says although she found no proof, Slinkard family members believe that this Jacob was really the son of Daniel/Catherine. In my database I have this Jacob linked to both sets of parents.

I would love to share information with you. Will you contact me at <a href="http://www.semogen@hotmail.com" target="_blank">www.semogen@hotmail.com.

I've found different opinions on which Slinkard family your Jacob belonged to. "The Jacob Slinkard family in Missouri" by Alice Spillman says that family members believed that Jacob was the son of Daniel, but she found no proof of this. On the other hand, Lorena Eaker Shell says in "GERMAN SPEAKING PEOPLE WEST OF THE CATAWBA RIVER IN NC 1750-1800" that Jacob is the son of Frederick Slinkard and Barbara Grounds.

I currently list him as the son of Frederick, but if you have other information, I'd like to have it.

Lisa,
According to the Shell book, Daniel's probate records list his children in this order: John, Jacob, Catherine, Polly, Denny, David, Ransom, Nancy, Rua, Daniel, Besey and last, Emanuel. That might indicate that your Jacob is a son since he is listed near the beginning and Emanuel is last. That is assuming that the probate was filed before Jacob Vanburen was born. That could confirm your grandmother's papers.

Also, I've never found records on some of the other children listed, so am baffled by that.

If you live in SE Missouri, the Cape Girardeau Genealogical Library might have a copy as Mrs. Spillman did a lot of genealogy work in that area. Also, I have a lot of her info about the family on Rootsweb.com WorldConnect and also on Gencircles.com.

Lorena Shell Eaker has copies of her book for sale - her email is renas@usit.net.

Sondra

Hi,
My name is Cheryl Slinkard and Daniel is my gggg-grandfather through his son David. From my records, there appear to be 3 Jacobs. Daniel's Father's name was Jacob, born in 1765 to Fredrick and Barbara (I have Grant instead of Grounds though). Then Daniel apparently had 2 sons named Jacob and Jacob Van Buren from 2 different wives, as indicated in your post. There is also a post in another thread from Sandy Tomey who is a decedent of the Jacob Van Buren, who I didn't realized existed until her thread.

All very interesting. My father, Jeryl Slinkard, son of Hubert W, son of James William , son of James Manuel, son of David Henderson, still lives in the Cape Girardeau area.

Jacob b-1814 MO, is his father Daniel Slinkard(1786)or Frederick(1767)

First my email is klbrisc@aol.com. Jacob(1814) is my ggg grandfather. There is a tree on rootsweb that has my Jacob as the son of Frederick(1767). Frederick came from N.C. to MO around 1801 with brother Jacob(1765). I have a tree someone did long ago that says Jacob(1765) had a son Daniel and Daniel had a son Jacob Vanburen(1839) and they thought my Jacob(1814) was Daniel's son also. I thought it would be strange to have 2 sons named Jacob. I went with the rootsweb site and put my Jacob(1814) as the son of Frederick. Now my grandma just passed away and I found a notebook in a drawer. She says Daniel's son Jacob Vanburen had a son Leo and this Leo and my Jacob(1814) son John Marshall were 1st cousins. which means my Jacob and Jacob vanburen were brothers and sons of Daniel. Daniel was married twice so my Jacob would be a son from the first wife and Jacob Vanburen from the second wife.
Someone please help me figure out who my Jacob's father is.
