Classification: Biography
Surnames: Sliter, Sluiter, Slitor
This is the story of my family as far back as I could find records and with the help of several of you I have met along the way while researching my family tree. If anyone knows of these mentioned people, or more information on them, their spouses, children, or any other known facts, please contact me, as all this was culled from all of you who responded to my original threads. Also, I hope that you will perhaps gain some knowledge of your branch on the tree from reading this..
This starts with my great-great-great grandfather whose name was William Sliter and who was born in 1750 in Holland. He came to the US at some point in time and settled in the Sand Lake NY area (known then as Greenbush). He married Mary Ray from Conn., and they had (one son that we could find) a son named Clement in 1772, who was my great-great grandfather. William passed away in 1821 and is buried in the large Sliter plot in the Sand Lake Union Cemetery, in Sand Lake NY.
Clement Sliter married Ruth Wilmot and had three sons and two daughters. Their first born was Calvin who was born in 1800. Their next son Lewis was born in 1803, a daughter Clarissa in 1809, another daughter Mary in 1819 and finally a son Silas in 1822. On April 10, 1801
Clement Sliter leased a piece of land in Sand Lake NY. In 1826 a house was built on the
property which still stands today. The house is in the original condition with the exception
of the kitchen and area behind the kitchen and the aluminum siding and the enclosure of the
back porch area. The house consists of three bedrooms, a front and back parlor, a dining
room which was originally the family kitchen, a study area which was originally the bedsink
and a bathroom which was converted from a pantry area. Very little change has be made to
the interior structure of the house. In February of 1833 Clement Sliter died leaving the land
to his son Lewis Sliter, who was my great grandfather. In April of 1855 Lewis Sliter and his
wife Mary conveyed the property to Clark Bentley. Also of note is that around 1820 Clement Sliter ran a tavern which many years later became the Crape Central Hotel.
In records found in the Rensselaer County Business Directory from 1870-71 it lists Lewis
Sliter as a farmer and justice of the peace. Silas Sliter as a farmer with 65 acres at Sliter’s Corners and a constable.
Silas Sliter married Julia Fanny Foster and had a son Willard who also became a farmer like
his father at Sliters Corners. There are no records of his ever marrying
Lewis Sliter married Mary, b. 1804 and had 5 children. Sarah Mariah, b. Mar, 1822, d. Jun, 1825. Sarah E. b. 1829. Mary J. b. 1831. John L. b. 1839. and Cornelia b. 1841.
John L Sliter married Elizabeth Adams, b. Aug. 1833, in West Sand Lake NY on April 20, 1854 at the Second Evangelical Lutheran Church which was witnessed by William Sliter. (other than him getting married in the same church 3 years later, on March 30, 1857 to Elizabeth Gowl we don't know how he fits into the family as there were many other Sliters in the area at the time.) John and Elizabeth had a son Henry L in 1857 and a daughter Mary in 1855. An 1860 census shows John L. as a farmer with real estate (20 acres) valued at $1200. and a personal estate valued at $400. He is 24, Elizabeth is 25, and are living in Sand Lake, NY.
In 1865 John is 30, and listed as a stage coach driver.
In 1875 the family is living with Lewis, and Mary, both age 72. John’s daughter Mary is now 20 and a school teacher.
1880 finds them in Beloit, Wisconsin. John L., 45 a horse trainer and Elizabeth, 47. Henry L, now 23 is a store clerk..
Henry L. marries at age 26, to Josephine B. Bacon, age 20. They have 5 children, Pearl A, b. Nov. 1885, WI. Cora L, b. Mar.1888, WI. Florence, b. Jan. 1890, IN. Mildred, b. Jan. 1897, IN. Elizabeth b. Feb. 1898, IN. Records show that Elizabeth is now living with them, but do not mention John L..
In 1892 John and Elizabeth moved to Concord NH, both to train and race trotters and for his wife's health. They returned to the Sand Lake area after the race season was over.
Elizabeth died in South Dakota July 20, 1919.. Nothing is mentioned anywhere of why they split up, or were divorced
John L. Sliter was a jack of all trades; He was a horse breeder, trainer, sulky driver, veterinarian, justice of the peace in Sand Lake in 1885, appointed to deputy sheriff of Rensselaer County in May of 1905 and elected constable of Sand Lake NY in November of 1907. He also operated the Vanderbilt House in Stephentown, NY, and operated the Tomhannock Hotel in Tomhannock, NY., but unfortunately I don't know the dates.
I've also tracked him out through Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa and Aberdeen, South Dakota where he attended his granddaughter (his son Henry L's daughter) Pearl Adelaide Sliter's wedding to Edward Soike on July 20, 1908..
Edward and Pearl had five children.. Edward, b. 1909.. Dolores, b. 1911.. Robert, b.1912.. And two unknown children who died in 1915 and 1917..
Edward died 1945, and Pearl in 1951. Both in California..
At some point in time John L Sliter met and married Emma V. Ledoux of Redford, NY. (her mother was from Canada and father from NY) They had a son named Walter J. in 1909 when John L was 70 and Emma was 37, and in 1910 were shown living at 147 Third St, Leominster, MA, in 1913 at 154 Middle St., and in 1916 at 355 Lancaster St. 1930 shows Emma living alone at 32 Monument Sq. and working as a house keeper for a private family. Emma was very
religious and possibly a teacher at one time. John L died in 1919 (in Leominster we think) and Emma died in 1938 at the age of 66 in Leominster MA.
Walter J Sliter married Ethel E Brooks, daughter of John Brooks and Josephine Rameau and
had five children; Donald born in 1932, Norman in 1936, Shirley in 1940, Avis in 1942, and
Roger in 1945.
Donald L. had three sons, Stephen, John and James.
Norman had two daughters, Cynthia and Gail and a son Michael. Norman passed away in1988.
Shirley married Robert Mallard and had a son Gary and a daughter Lisa.
Avis had three sons, Kenny, Jerry and Scott MacCartney. Avis passed away in 2005.
Roger had four children, Dean P, Jessica L, April J and Wendy L.
Please continue writing this, so your children will have some history of where they came from and who their ancestors are..
