I am researching my family history, Slovaks. My great grandfather was George born in Czech. in 1887. His mothers name was Ann (Anna) that was married to Paul. So I have been told. I have no proof of this. Could this be the same Slovaks you were looking for? I cannot find any info on it. What is the Slovaks name on the marriage cert?
Thank you,
Angie Bandy
paul_bandy@yahoo.com

Have you located a precise name of a village in the Saris region (Saros megye)?
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/saros.jpg
MEHALL is an Americanized version of MIHAL. I would say a very close pronouncation.

I posted on another board a couple of days ago and now wish I'd waited 24 hrs. I was requesting info on the name Matko. I now understand that the name (my ggm) was spelled "Matco" on her marriage license, then 13 yrs later on my gf's SS account application he spelled it "Masco." My ggm was Slovak, Catholic, and may have been from the Saris region. My ggf's name was spelled "Mihal" on my gf's marriage license. That too, evolved to "Mehall" on the SS account application. He was also Slovak and that's about all I know. The census data states their arrival as 1890. They lived in Jefferson Co, PA.

Hi, I wonder if you're still looking, do you need help?

Nagy = Nad in Slovak ("on the" in English)
Viszlok = Visla in Slovak. the Visla is a river in northern Slovakia and Southern Poland. So you are looking for galicziabol on the visla or galicziabol nad vislom in Slovak/polish.

But you have a problem. I think the town you're looking for is now in Poland or if in Slovakia, has not used that name in 100 years. But it is a city name. i'll keep looking.

My grandfather, George Talnak, was married to Mari Krynak--also spelled conventional English as Mary. George Talnak had a sister, Sue Talnak in Pennsylvania and perhaps later in Conneticut. Also, he had a brother that was killed in a labor strike. He was survived by a wife and children. I will have to check my records to see what his name was. Do you have a family tree started?--Marie

Are you working on genealogy of this lady? If yes, than you need to locate a name of a town for this lady ( if she was born in the "old country" ) in order to proceed. The LDS-Mormons (Family History Center) have filmed the church records from which you can gather ancestral information.

Her SS-5Form (social security application) should provide some important information.

The name SLOVAK lists in good numbers in Slovak Republic's phone book.
www.zoznamst.sk

124 people with the last name Slovak passed thru Ellis Island port to America.

Slovkia areas of Kalava Spis Stolica and Povina Slovakia

I have two hand written notes marked "1928" by my grandmother. The writing is somewhat difficult to read perhaps due to a different way of spelling and writing of the alphabet. They list two areas (for lack of a better description).
The first: Povina, Posta Kiysnovmessa, Cesko Slovenska
R, Europe and the second: Posta Krasno NAD Kysolov
Trencanska Zupa Nove Mesta, Cesko Slovenska R. Europe.

My grandmother Julianna Ondercin was born in 1895 in the village of Kalava, Spiska Stolica Slovakia.

Her first husband my grandfather was born in Povina. Her second husband was born in Tuncanska, Stolica Slovakia.

Both names of the addressed parties are family surnames.

Please can anyone tell me which lists I should be looking on?
I can't relate to the major named areas given such as
Bratislava etc.

Thanks so much! Perhaps with the help of some kind hearted people I may be able to find out more about my grandfather, his family and what happened to him. State side searches are not going well!
Diane Perkins

Diane,

By chance I just noted your query. Your locations are:

The first: Povina, Posta Kiysnovmessa, Cesko Slovenska
R, Europe - the correct spelling is
Povina, Posta Kys. Nove Mesto, CeskoSlovenska R. = Povina, Post Office Kysucke Nove Mesto, Czechoslovak Republic

Povina is a small village, the nearest Post Office is in Kysucke Nove Mesto

and the second: Posta Krasno NAD Kysolov
Trencanska Zupa Nove Mesta, Cesko Slovenska R. Europe - the correct spelling is
Posta Krasno nad Kysucou, Trencianska Zupa, Nove Mesto, Cesko Slovenska R. = here is some mismatch, I guess that the Location is Krasno nad Kysucou, the nearest Post Office is again Kysucke Nove Mesto, Trencin county, Czechoslovak Republic.

Both the locations are apparently in the Kysuce region - NE of Zilina.

Tuncanska, Stolica Slovakia means Turcianska Stolica = Turiec County.

Kysuce region and Turiec County are in the Central Slovakia. Spiska Stolica (= Spis County) is in Eastern Slovakia. I hope this will help you to post your queries in proper list.

Thank you for the website informaiton!
About the surname spelling. Are the changes likely to be because a priest is writing it phonetically? Or are there political reasons?
How different can it get? I am also researching "Pavuk" and records here in the US have rendered it 7 different ways (so far.)
BTW, do you know if these surnames have a meaning? I was told "Pavuk" meant "spider" which is a bit upsetting as I am an arachaphobe.

Many thanks for your help!!
I have begun using the LDS records but it is very slow for me as European handwriting differs from that which we are taught here in the US. (To be honest, the European script is much more attractive!)
In addition, I am not fluent in Hungarian, altho some words are similar to the Slovak that my mother taught me.
However, the first rule of genealogical research is "Patience." The second is "Perseverance."
Thank you again!!

Leslie

We should take this discussion on Slovakia General board as this is a board for surname Slovak.
The church records would be in Latin, Hungarian or church Slavonic depending on the religious orientation. The spelling PAVUK is used and is Slovak. In the church records possible that the spelling is the same or Pawuk or something similar.
Most Slavic surnames do have a meaning. Pavuk does mean spider. The English spelling or the spelling used in the "new land" does not carry over into the church records. Up to 1918 the present Slovak Republic was under Hungary's rule and thus Hungarian spelling was used. No W in Slovak alphabet.

Leslie

We can stop the discusion on this board, continue if need be off the board, you can start a new query on Slovakia General Ancestry board. Have no idea why you were not allowed to start a new thread on Slovakia General or Vychodoslovensky kraj.
If you want to continue off the board, click on my name in this post and there is my e-mail address.
