I have a new theory...............

I am that descendant of Jefferson Slover of Warrick Co., IN. I know quite a bit more now and I have some assumptions.

My main theory, to be proven, or not - is that Jefferson was perhaps the son of James Slover and his wife Elizabeth that lived in Vanderburgh Co, IN and who was the son of the famous John Slover and Nellie. This would be the James that cared for his brother, Isaac's, twin sons for a time.

Someone just wrote to me and told me that Jefferson Slover married Elizabeth/Eliza Webb in Vanderburgh Co., IN. I believe that she was possibly married before to Miles B. Hargrave - and he died abt. 1842. Elizabeth and Jefferson had three children all born after 1845. In 1850 there were four more girls living with them (Margaret, Theodoria, Lucinda and Vina/Nina - all born much earlier and not claimed as Jefferson's children in his probate record. I have wondered if these could be Jefferson's sisters.
The 1830 Census shows James wife, Elizabeth, with a male under five, and four daughters. - living in Vanderburgh Co., IN.

Something happened between 1850 and 1860 Census, as in 1860 Jefferson Slover has a new wife - Martha Gibson Spillman - a divorcee. She brings her two children to the marriage - West Union Spillman and Rhoda Spillman. Then she and Jefferson have two sons, Arelious and Marcus Slover. Martha may have died in child birth because by 1862 Jefferson migrates to Washington Co., KS with all the children - all but those four oldest girls listed in the 1850 Census. And all of these children he brings to Kansas are listed in his probate record. Jefferson dies in 1866.

So I have filled in many holes, but have not been able to take Jefferson back yet. I only have my theory. And my Gr. Gr. Grandmother, daughter of Jefferson, and named Pamelia Caroline Slover - I'm now thinking her name must have been Permelia because the name Permelia is such a familiar name in Elizabeth/Eliza Webb's family history. Her father was Wm. Webb - a Methodist Minister. And
he and his wife, Jannet Campbell were married in Logan Co., KY - which I find interesting.

So I welcome any thoughts on my theory - anything that
would prove it or disprove it............appreciate
any tips.
Do you have any information on Levi Slover, father of
Emma, Walter and Harvey Slover? I am trying to figure
out where Levi lived when he first came to Kansas with his
father. After his father passed away Levi lived with his
sister in Haddam for a while. I am willing to share what
information I have with distant cousins. And hoping to gather more information as I go. Thanks for reading this.
Penny
ps - Levi was brother to my gr. gr. grandmother.
Ida Alice Slover - b. TN 1878

Searching for info on Ida Alice Slover (b. TN 1878) and Charles Cockrum (b. AR) who married in AR in 1896. They are my gggrandparents. Charles' parents were Bryant Cockrum and Lucy Jane Manus, and Ida's parents were Alfred H. Slover and Mary J. Vandegriff. Charles and Ida's daughter, Ettie, was born in AR in 1897 then married in OK in 1913, so I assume that the family moved to OK prior to that, probably about 1910. Rumor has it that Ida died abt 1919. I can't locate any census with this family on it. Did Ettie have any siblings? What was Charles' birthdate? When and where did Ida & Charles die? Any info would be appreciated. Thank you. rhall@cisaz.com

I don't know if the information that three Seloover brother's came to America in 1629 is correct. I'm pretty sure this information was from the 1941 book by Mabel Hadler and was corrected in the 1968 book. I believe it said that two Selover brother's came with the Rockefeller brothers on a boat they made themselves. I believe the real story was Isaac (Schoolmaster and Church Reader) came in 1681 and settled first in the New Castle Delaware area. I know he was in New York in 1699 when he married Judith Waldron. There are many mention's of Isaac in various books. He is mentioned in a book concerning his profession of Teacher. I think it's Dutch Schools of the New Netherlands. (New York) I would love to know all these people.. Regardless of the spelling of this name WE all have this ISAAC as our common ancestor. Some from his son Abraham, some from his son Daniel (me) some from his son Isaac and some from his son Jacob. I believe he wanted us ALL to know one another. Madelyn Selover Evans.

There was a pamphlet written about this experience concerning this John Selover/Slover. It is "Narrative Of The Perils And Sufferings of Dr. Knight and John Slover among The Indians During The Revolutionary War, by Hugh Breckenridge 1st published in 1782.. Mabel Jacques Hadler donated her copy of this Pamphlet to the Library in my area when she passed on. I have read it, (at the library in the Geneaology section) it is very interesting. but is not loaned. My aunt Christina Fern Selover Landers had a copy but has been unable to locate it. This John was the son of Jacob Slover Son of Abraham and Sophia Schermerhorn Selover/Slover. Jacob was also killed by the Indians. Madelyn Selover Evans

I'm a granddaughter of Eliza's. In 1827 she married Rev. Darius Allen, an evagelist whose first charge was in Lexington, NC. Then transferred to Columbus, Ohio Presbytery in 1829.
Would be very interested in learning more about Eliza's parents and grandparents. She died in a yellow fever epidemic of 1864. About 1300 perished during this epidemic. Two other stones
on the lot read: James Slover (b. New York, 1769) and Nancy Slover (died 1822). Maybe her mother?
In reading messages, I noticed there was a reference to an Indian fighter(?)Wondering if Eliza had family in Ohio
following the Revolutionary War.Wondering if her husband was appointed a post in Ohio because she had family there.
Its been my understanding that the Slovers were a prominent family in New York. Any insight here?
As you can tell, I'm a novice. My main question is who were the Slovers?
Any info or guidance, would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Clarissa Withrow - a Slover or a Clark?

I have a new problem for an old puzzle. My Withrow family has always said that Richard Withrow married a Clarissa Clark: http://www.angelfire.com/ok2/chatmondieu/index.html

Richard Withrow (Son of James Withrow & Elizabeth McGee)
b. 1802 Kentucky
d. 1868 War Eagle, Madison Co., Arkansas
m. 1822 Clarissa Clark (Dau. of Stewart and Betsy English Clark)
b. 1802 Tennessee
d. 1861 War Eagle, Arkansas

Last night a kind lady contacted me and told me about the Slover family and the idea of Clarissa Slover marrying Richard Withrow. Can anyone help document this one way or another?

Another thing. My grandmother said there was Indian blood also, and indicated it was through Clarissa. I've never been able to prove anything about that. It does tie in nicely with your Slover story though.

Fraterville Mine

Does any one know how many of the men that died in the Fraterville Mine were related in some way to the Slover's? I've found William H. Slover, his son's Samuel H. and John B. and a son-in-law, Thomas Luttrell. 2 nephews, James Raleigh and Samuel Logan, (William H. Slover's, brother Samuel Maynard's son's ) Were there were any other in-laws, or cousins, with different names that died?
Phyllis Cantrell
