The dates don't exactly match up, but I truly do not know when my Grandfather Thomas Smethers was born nor how old he was when he was killed. My Mom has a picture of him, it looked like he was in his early 20's in this picture, not sure. I figure my Grandfather was born around 1890? But not sure?
My GFather was an electrician and was electricuted when someone turned the elecricity on the two wires he was working on (at least that is what we were told).Md Elsie Opplinger, my Grandmother, in the early 1900's; their children were, my Mother, Vera was born in 1911 in Huntertown, IN and she was around 8 yrs old when he was killed, per our Uncle Jim (one of her 2 Brothers).and her Brothers, Uncle Art, who was a former Pro-Bowler (out of Fort Wayne)who had 2 sons and Uncle Jim married Aunt Wilma, they had 4 children, Vera Marie, Mary, Dennis and I do not remember my other Cousins name.I know I have relation in Columbus, OH area, being Uncle Jim and Uncle Art's children, my cousins, but have not communicated with them since we were kids (about 46 years ago, isn't that sad!) We simply lost touch. my Grandfather (Thomas Smethers) had siblings whose names were:Sisters; Julia, Kate and Grace, Brothers; Lawrence and Clarence (who were twins).My Great-Aunt Julia married Kimes Wesl!

I belong to the George Smethers family Loretta mentioned. MY ancestor went to TN with his wife's family instead of going to OH with his father and siblilngs. Philip Smethers' son married Minerva Kinnamon in Madison Co. IN. I am trying to determine who her father was as she does not appear in any of the Kinnamon records per se.

I realize this is a rather dated posting but thought I should reply anyway. I live in Ft. Wayne and my grandfather was Lawrence R. Smethers. I believe he may have had a sister named Julia. Not much is known about his family. I know he and his siblings were split up early in life for some reason. My grandfather Lawrence R. married Lucinda Bell and had 4 children...Laura, twins Alice and Agnes, and my father, Lawrence M. They lived in Ft.Wayne. I am one of eight Lawrence M. Smethers children.

Hi,

I am looking for an obituary for Willis A Smethers (dob 4/8/1927; dod 12/23/2001). He was from Middletown OH and attended the University of Kentucky where he played basketball for one season.

son TH Smethers along with another worker, Emil Jacobson, were electrocuted in a freak accident when a guy wire of the construction tower they were working on became crosseed with a high tension wire carrying 4,400 volts. Thomas was partially resuscitated by a pulmotor, but when the police patrol car broke down on the way to the hospital, he died. Mr. Jacobson who tried to save Thomas, his friend, died in the effort. The newspaper article on the dreadful event discribes it as if to make you feel you were right there.

George Willis Smethers was my great grandfather as well.

I have pictures of "Uncle Jake" Smethers who I assume was his brother Jacob.

I have other pictures as well that I am trying to sort out.

By the way, I met your grandfather, my great uncle Guy when I was a young girl. He and Aunt Ruth were such lovely people.

NOTE:Fr T Snyder- The only one of these siblings to move from Pennsylvania as far as I know was Josiah. However, I believe Salome Smethers Stout's family moved somewhere out of state. I also have been having trouble finding Lydia Keen and her family, although I have found them in the 1870 census

Wondering if you have gathered any more info on this family? Lois mentioned that George'e father could be a Henry. Have been researching this as most Smethers and the ones who went to OHIO were fr the family of Wm Smither d 1760 Berks co Pa.

Hi, we live in Osawatomie. My husband's (Gail Kline) gr gr grandfather is your gr gr grandfather, Eli Smethers. He descends from Geo. Esterly's younger sister, Nancy Emmaline. I'm looking for any info on my grandfathers side of the family. His name was Elvis Lee Smethers. He was born in Brock Tx, grew up in Denton Tx. His parents were Vernon and Nina Jewell (Parton) Smethers. He was born in 1925. He moved to Ca although I'm not sure when. He had 4 brothers and 4 sisters. I think he was the only one to leave Tx. I think his brothers have all past on and I think there are 2 sisters left, they still in Tx.

I am not sure but my father may have been born in Eureka, KS. Possible Cherrydale, KS. His name was Glen Dudley Smethers. His father was Edwin and his mother was Clara May Peebles. This is all the info I have on them. Would appreciate any help.

I don't know if this will be any help but in my husbands family there was an Abraham on the 1850 census. He was listed with his father George, mother Elizabeth and several brothers and sisters. He was 11years old on that census. It was in Etna Township and the county looks like Hocking or something similar. I couldn't read the writing but it is in Ohio. On the 1860 census he was in Fairfield Co., Ohio and was next door to his brother and was working as a helper in a butcher shop. From there I have lost him.

My Great Grandmother was Ida Belle Smethers Harris. She was a sister to Jacob and George Willis. Their parents were George Smethers b.1834 in Fairfield Co., OH and Elizabeth Hansel b. 1836. They were married in Fairfield Co., on Feb. 7, 1856. Both died in Mercer Co., OH. George in 1889 and Elizabeth in 1911. There are other siblings. I also have Elizabeth's obit from the local paper. I know of a Thomas Smethers in Huntington Co. Indiana. I don't think he is your grandfather, but this is the imformation I have. Thomas Smethers b. 1857 d. 20 Aug. 1938. Married Ida Belle Schuman 28 Aug. 1879. Their daughter, Lillie, had a son named Thomas. His grandparents adopted him, giving him the Smethers name. He married a Clara and died in Wisc. in 1966. These are the only Thomas Smethers that I've come across. My grandfather was a Smethers.
If I see other imformation that might help, I'll send it your way.

I am looking for information on my great-grandmother, Jane Ellen Smethers. She married Richard Waddington and they had a daughter, Jane Ellen, born in 1891. Jane Ellen Smethers died when my grandmother, Jane Ellen, was about 3 years old. Jane Ellen, the daughter (my grandmother), married Martin Stanley and they had three children, my mother being one of them. My great-grandfather was George Willis Smethers. His son, my Grandfather, Guy Alven Smethers was born in Celina, OH Mercer Co OH in 1896. He lived in Celina until the 1920s & later moved to Middletown, OH Butler Co OH. My Father, Willis Alven Smethers was born in Middletown OH Butler Co in 1927. I have been unable to find any information on the parents of George Willis Smethers. I would be interested in exchanging any information you might have.

I am looking for information on Eli Smethers (born around 1825 and died between 1860 and 1870). He had a wife named Barbara or Barbary and children named Malinda, George Esterly and Nancy Emmaline. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for information on my Smethers ancestors. My great great great great grandfather was Eli Smethers. I descend through his oldest daughter Malinda Smethers who married George Partain. Malinda was the oldest sibling of Nancy Emmaline and George Easterly Smethers. Do you have any information that you can share?

Which child do you connect with on this line. And who were the other children. I found Josiah in the 1880 soundex and it lists Mertel as his wife, who was she? And I have Mary Hill Smethers dying in Illinois in 1856. Can you be of help in this?

George Washington Smethers, Jr. was born in Sedgewick Co., Ks. on March 16, 1919 the son of George Washington and Alta Bell (Stearns)Smethers, Sr. He married Ida Bell Arvin on July 4, 1944 1st, then to a Laura ? 2nd. He is my father's 1/2 brother. I have all info. Alta Bell Stearns was the daughter of John Edward and Effie Lucretia (Proper)Stearns. They are buried in Augusta, Kansas with George & Alta's son Lawrence, which I do have pictures of the gravesites. Anyone interested, please feel to write.
