I've been studying the family of Richard Smethurst.

In 1860, William Currey and his wife Ellen were living in Philadelphia [5th Ward, page 319] along with their six children: Ann J., Rebecca (age 20; we'll see her again), Ellen, William, June, and Eliza.

In 1870, Richard Smethurst was 6 years old, and was living with Rebecca Smethurst (age 30), Ella Smethurst (age 4), and Julia Smethurst (age 13). They were living in the household of Philip Hill in Philadelphia [District 79, page 97, household 741].

In 1880, Richard, age 15, is listed as a grandson in the household of William Curey in Philadelphia [District 508, page 26, household 176]. Also living there was R. F. Smethurst (age 43, daughter of William Curey), and Elen Smethurst (age 14, granddaughter of William Curey). Despite the age difference, I believe that R. F. is Rebecca who was in the 1860 census record above.

Twenty years later, in 1900, Richard is in Hudson County, New Jersey [District 1, page 2]. This census gives the month and year of each person's birth. Richard was born in Dec 1864 in Pennsylvania. He is married to an Elizabeth who was born in Jan 1864 in New York. They have two sons, Richard (born Mar 1887 in New York) and Robert B. (born Aug 1888 in Pennsylvania). Richard Sr. is a bookkeeper.

By 1910 the family has moved to Hamilton County, Ohio [District 295, page 1]. Richard Sr. is an accountant. Richard Jr. is working as a grinder in a machine shop. He is married to Catherine B. (age 23, born in Kentucky) and they have one child, a daughter named Elizabeth R. (age 1). Robert is single, still living at home, and is also an accountant.

In 1920 the family is living in Cincinnati [District 72, page 6]. This includes Richard Sr. and his wife Elizabeth, Richard Jr. and his wife Catherine along with two children (Elizabeth, age 11, and Robert, age 8), Robert B. and his wife Mary who is 30 and born in Kentucky, and Ellen Woods with her son Allen. Ellen is listed as a widow and sister to Richard Sr. If you look back to the 1870 census, you will find her. Richard Jr. has joined his father and brother as an accountant.

In 1930 Richard Jr. and Catherine are in Cincinnati [District 31-17, page 17] with three children: Elizabeth, age 21; Robert S., age 18; and Anna L., age 9. Robert and his family were also in Cincinnati [District 31-21, page 27]. He and Mary now have a daughter named Mary, age 8. Richard Sr. and Elizabeth were also in Cincinnati [District 31-407, page 209A].

Now if you will go back to the 1870 census you will find Rebecca Currey who had apparently married a Mr. Smethurst sometime after the 1860 census was taken since she was single and at home with her parents in that year. The confusion I am dealing with is the girl named Julia Smethurst, age 13, in that census record. She cannot be the daughter of Rebecca since she would have been born before 1860.

The only Julia that I can possibly associate with her is one found in an 1860 census record as the daughter of Richard and Ellen Smethurst in Philadelphia [5th Ward, pages 115-16]. I have been unable to located either Richard or Ellen in the 1870 census, which leads me to wonder if the Julia with Rebecca could be the daughter of Richard and Ellen.

Any help you can offer will be appreciated.
